The odds were still impressive, the sheer staggering coincidence refusing to leave his mind no matter how hard he tried to push it away and focus on the more important facts of the right here and the right now. Just because it was true that Forbes had heard a number of stories, ones that didn’t always paint Holly in the best possible light didn’t mean he was about to walk away from whatever this night turned out to be. He was a big believer in learning about people by actual direct means, by trusting to his own instincts instead of only judging a person on what someone else had told him and if that meant that now and then he was burnt in the process then it was something Forbes was willing to risk, for the rewards were that much greater. His grandma had always taught him the only way to learn and too truly feel was through his own experiences, not the ones of others.
“The stories are mostly about Ronnie,” Forbes agreed, apparently not put out about that fact in the slightest. It just meant that she didn’t know too much about him, which kept some of the mystery and surprise alive which was the foundation blocks in all teasing banter relationships. The downside of course was the fear that she might think he was something of a bore for not featuring so prominently in the stories; it was the risk you always took meeting someone new. There was just no fun if the other person had the complete upper hand and he knew for sure that anything he might have heard about the fashion editor was just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. “I like to think I’m the quieter one nobody suspects.”

"Well, I imagine that would be a good label to have," Holly replied with lopsided smile. "It's the quiet ones that you need to watch out for, and yet, as you said, no one will ever suspect you. I'd use that to my advantage, if I were you."
Mostly because Holly was slightly more manipulative that the average lady, but in her line of work, it was something of a necessity. Not to mention the fact that it made up a good deal of her personality. The blonde bombshell was used to getting her way and she didn't really care how; it might have been ruthless, but it had worked out well for her, so far.
At the moment, she was using that manipulative streak to her advantage, making brief and cheerful small talk with the bartender in order to glean another martini. She didn't say another word to Forbes, mostly because she wanted him to do the talking and maybe see if she could 'reel him in'; he had managed to peak her interest, but she didn't have to let him know that.

If nothing else, he could appreciate a woman who knew herself and her power well enough to be able to be confident enough to try and use what ever skills and natural assets she had. Forbes just normally preferred it when a woman didn’t try and do it on him – well he was fine with a little manipulation, it was all part of the game but after a while he liked things more open. Right now though, he was enjoying the opening stages far too much to worry about any such things.
Forbes had never been a fan of the ‘old fashioned’ view of woman, that believed they should stay indoors, out of sight, pretty to look at but nothing going on upstairs. He knew plenty of people who still felt that way however, although he at least could pride himself on knowing that his closest friends weren’t so stuck in the past. It had helped, growing up, to be raised by a just a woman. Not just a woman in one way of the word, Forbes highly doubted anyone would have gotten away with calling his Grandma ‘just’ anything, even back in the days of women being seen and not heard.
Holly seemed anything but a shy and retiring woman, even if she was currently silent; to him at least. “Please, allow me to buy you this one,” Forbes offered smoothly, nodding to the drink the bartender was currently making up.

She offered him a coy glance over her shoulder. "Are you sure?" she murmured. "I'd hate to be an inconvenience."
Of course, it was always flattering when an attractive man offered to pay for her drinks. The fact that she was single now naturally meant she could be a bit more playful about accepting, though she knew the risks. Give them an inch, and they walk all over you; some men seemed to be under the impression that buying a woman a drink meant that he could expect more as the night went on. Not that that wasn't the case here.
But still. Holly had her pride. And she wasn't about to throw herself into his lap. Yet.

Had Forbes been raised in a normal, one father, one mother, family unit perhaps he would have turned out differently, perhaps he would have considered men superior to women in some primal respect, even if it wasn’t consciously acknowledged in his mind. His Grandma had seen to it however that he didn’t take anything for granted, that he didn’t consider one or the other to be superior or inferior and so when he offered to pay, it was simply that. No hidden strings or other expectations although he was aware that Holly would not – could not – be aware of that.
That wasn’t to say that he was planning to leave the Boltini Lounge alone if anything else was possible. Holly intrigued and interested him on more than one level, even when he took into account her friendship with the red haired sergeant and the ‘legendary’ interest she harboured for Chris Taylor. The glance over her shoulder and words were undoubtedly meant to cause a reaction and it did, Forbes smoothly replying to her. “Holly, everyone is many things, but you? An inconvenience? I don’t think such a thing is possible, but rather it would be an honour.”

Her eyebrows arched up towards her hairline and her smile was something smooth and feline. "Mr. Forbes," she said, a hint of mischief in her tone. "Has anyone ever told you that you are something of a smooth talker?"
She loved this. The banter back and forth -- sizing up the other half. Of course Holly didn't grant just anyone her undivided attention, and the fact that Forbes seemed to be able to keep up with her definitely made him more than just anyone. Her smile took on the same mischievous tone as her smile and she shifted subtly, uncrossing and crossing her legs in a decided ladylike fashion to let the side of her foot rest lightly against Forbes' calf.
"I imagine you find all kinds of trouble with a skill like that."

There were all sorts of sayings about cats and females, mostly involving death and being out classed in every respect by them. It was true what they said, the female of the species was more deadly, because they were just so much… well more. Forbes liked women, liked their shape, their voice, their personality. Liked the kind of things you could only really do with women. Holly was a prime example of a deadly – possibly deadly attractive – feline, and right now the only downside he could see to the blond woman was that she was aware of her beauty perhaps a little too much.
Then again, Forbes hardly knew he wand he wasn’t about to go judging her one way or the other just yet. “Well, why don’t you tell me…” he suggested, feeling the light touch of her leg against his, the slight contact making his leg feel almost tingly. Forbes smiled back at her, enjoying the flirting for what it was and certainly enjoying the touch of her foot. It made him wonder what it would feel like to touch other parts, perhaps even bare skin on skin, the glide of her neck, or the smooth skin down her arm. “Although I wouldn’t call this trouble just yet.”

Had Holly been able to discern what exactly Julian Forbes had on his mind, she would have done her best to encourage him. As it was, she moved the foot that was currently pressed to his leg, gliding the toe ever-so-slighly up and down his calf. Anything to encourage the flirtation that had been building, because Holly was enjoying herself and the only logical thing to do would be to push this as far as it could go.
"You're a smooth talker, Mr. Forbes," she murmured, taking a delicate sip of her fresh martini. "And, if this isn't trouble, then what would you call it?"
Of course, she was aware of the fact that her charms seemed to be working. Holly was nothing if not self-aware; she looked damned good, and she knew it.

“Hmm…” Forbes appeared to ponder her question for a moment, taking the time to take another sip of his own drink. She wasn’t the only one who was enjoying herself right now with the conversation and Forbes had to admit, there were so many positive perks to be had in a round of harmless flirting, not least the hope that it would then move on from ‘harmless flirting’ and become something much more physical and exciting. They were getting a little physical right now, if Holly’s leg was anything to go by, the delicate toe rubbing against him.
“I’d probably call this the appetiser…” he replied after the artful pause, warm eyes meeting her gaze, his whiskey glass still hovering near his lips. “It’s the run up to what could be trouble… if it’s good or bad trouble, well that I have to admit I’ve not quite figured out yet.” He didn’t really want to feed that ego of hers, the cop side of him knowing that there was a high chance that it could lead to trouble down the line, if she got too aware of her body and messed with the wrong person. Then again, he didn’t want to lie to her about her amazing charms.
