It was rare that Amirah stopped in her tracks and explained herself. Mainly that was because she didn't have anyone to explain herself to[/b] but it was also because that seemed like such a waste of time and air and energy. Why waste time speaking when in that time she could have just done the thing she was expounding on unnecessarily. It was a relief that Thatcher actually didn't ask any questions though, that made the whole event a lot easier on a very tired old wolf and she might even have smiled at the sound of the gun but her face was turned away from view. She raised her eyebrows at James and tilted her head to the side. It seemed that she didn't need to say much else about what was going to happen to him if he didn't want to talk to her, he got the message and there was no help coming to him from Thatcher either.
"Okay, okay, okay," James was saying, his voice small and fragile. "I know a guy, a guy at the docks, a guy who's gonna be handling the containers. I can get you a name, yeah? A name is good right?"
Amirah touched her tongue to her teeth thoughtfully. "A name is worth a hand. Perhaps a whole arm." For a moment she looked at his hands and then back to his eyes. "Which one is your favourite?"

Thatcher knew better than to expect an explanation from Amirah, as she knew better than to expect one from him. They might be strangers in some ways, two people who knew little about one another on a personal level, but they knew enough to make it count. That knew the things that mattered. Amirah's vicious and single-minded pursuit of her goals, for example, was something Thatcher had become familiar with many years ago. They were somewhat alike in that way, actually, both so determined and ferocious when it came to getting what they wanted, the kind of people whose paths you didn't want to cross unless you wanted to be put down.
It wasn't really in his nature to interfere in another person's business but what he went on to say wasn't intended as interference, rather assistance of a sort. He addressed James when he said, "I'd do better than a name if I were you." It was said with more meaning than the words implied on the surface, as though they carried another message, one that rang loud and clear to anyone really listening: I'm not going to be able to stop her.

If nothing else they were distant business associates of a sort. They moved in similar circles, they traversed the dark parts of the world, separate even from the mainstream supernatural world. There were layers and layers of darkness and she and Thatcher operated into the deepest ones. So they had an understanding of one another, they each knew what the other was capable of and they acted accordingly. Thatcher's additional words seemed to go some way towards helping James make his decision and she was silently grateful for that fact, were she alone she might have started cutting by now and once she started that it was a long night ahead of her, one she had little patience for at this moment in time.
"A name, an address." James had his eyes flickering between both Thatcher and Amirah and the gun in the hands of the former as well as the knife in the hand of the latter. He shuddered. "A name, address, a time, a place, but I gotta get gone from the city if I do that. You get that Novak? 'Cause I'm not sticking around to see the fall out when you hit this guy. If I even live that long."
Amirah watched him for a long moment. "Acceptable," was all she said. For a moment he looked relieved and then she moved in closer and placed a hand on his shoulder, a touch that looked gentle but sent a very clear message. "If your information proves to be misleading I will turn my attention and every once of my willpower into finding you." There was no need to say what she would do to him then. It was obvious.

When Amirah's hand rested on James' shoulder that way Thatcher tipped his head back a little, almost as if to back up the message the female was sending. If the man tried to run he wouldn't have just one person chasing him and it seemed important that he realise that. If Thatcher didn't know better he could have sworn James' face paled even more than it already had and if he took in a particular deep breath he thought he could pick out a telltale stink on the air. Amirah had suitably terrified her target, that much was clear, there was no mistaking the message she was sending with that hand on his shoulder.
Even so Thatcher didn't put his gun away. Not just yet. The informant needed to do his job first, actually provide Amirah with what he had promised. Only then would Thatcher set his gun back in its holster and allow James to feel any sense of relief. The pressure wasn't off yet, not until he had delivered the information the female before him was pursuing with the kind of focus and determination only wolves could really achieve.
Thatcher almost smiled then. Just a little. Almost.

It seemed that he understood fully that he would not be leaving that alley without giving over the information that was now expected of him and he fumbled as he searched his pockets for something to write on and with. Only then did Amirah back up enough to let him do so properly. Cool and quiet she watched him scribble out a name and address, a time and a place on the back of a receipt. Then he handed it over her her with a trembling hand. Green eyes narrowed down at the paper and she stood smoothly to her full height again, folding it up as she went. Satisfactory. When she reached down it was to grab James by his jacket and life him physically to his feet. For a moment she stared at him and then simply gave him a shove down the alleyway, watching as he ran off into the night. If he had provided her with bad information she would absolutely kill him and he knew that.
When he was gone she turned to look at Thatcher, putting her knife away. "You assistance was useful," she told him and that was what passed as a thank you from her on a good day. Clearly she was a lot more tired than she had realised if she was giving out thank-yous. "James will likely leave town immediately."

Thatcher kept his gun calmly at the ready while James dug in his pocket, retrieving the materials necessary to deliver what he had promised, keeping his eyes on the other male as well. There was no sense in taking chances, both he and Amirah knew that by now in their respective lines of work. It was dangerous to underestimate anyone, regardless of how unimpressive or harmless they might initially come across. It wasn't until the informant had been sent on his way with that shove that he engaged the safety on his gun and slipped it back into its holster at the side of his belt. Only when James was gone from sight did Thatcher take his eyes from his retreating frame though, turning his gaze down towards his companion.
His brows raising he set his hands on his hips in a way that most would have seen as casual but those like Amirah would see for what it really was. Quietly prepared. Always ready. "I'm glad I could be useful." It was an unnecessary remark but the smallest things could get Thatcher's hackles up, even Amirah's almost clinical attempt at gratitude. He heard it for what it really was and if nothing else the female before him would know that as retorts went it had been a mild one. "What's your next move?" he asked her then, holding her gaze.

By contrast it seemed to take a lot to get under Amirah's skin; she was too hard, too cold to allow things to irritate her, she had too much at stake to be concerned with a thing so human as feeling irritated, it felt indulgent to her to feel anything at all really. it was no real way to live but then again what she was doing could hardly be called living at all, she was working, constantly. When Thatcher met and held her gaze like that she looked back at him unflinchingly, not something that many people dared to try with Thatcher Ward but she respected him enough to hold that gaze even if she didn't respond to his initial remark.
Amirah held up the folded paper. "Investigate this name. I need details and he will have them if he is a good source. One way or another he will tell me what he knows." Every step closer to the port was a step closer to Oshiro and therefore she was more likely to meet more of him employees, those who would be hard to persuade to her thinking. Treading carefully was important, but time was also of the essence. "I will not make trouble for you while I am here, Thatcher. That is not my intention."

There was a part of him that respected her in return for holding his gaze the way she did but at the same time there was a part of him that was riled by it. The dominant in him. The Alpha. Even so he didn't do anything about it, didn't growl or lash out as he might with any other wolf that dared to hold his gaze that way, because he knew there was no challenge here.
The certainty with which Amirah spoke about her plans was refreshing in a city filled with so many people who were unsure about their next step in life. He had missed that about her, he realised out of nowhere, something he hadn't expected. The mention of trouble almost had him smiling, a grim and humourless sort of smile. "Correct me if I'm wrong," he said, "but trouble tends to follow you wherever you go, whether you want it or not."
After a short pause he said, "We've always had that in common."

Amirah was disinterested in challenges of that kind unless it was necessary to her work. Thatcher was not an obstacle to her goals, currently, and so she was not concerned with asserting herself between the two of them. They both knew that they were strong enough and old enough to give one another a serious fight but it would not gain either of them anything, not here and now at any rate. There was some part of her that was distantly interested in how exactly that would go but it was one of those indulgent thoughts that was so forcefully put aside.
"I have enemies," she said simply, agreeing with him. "As do you." It was true to a certain extent that trouble managed to find her one way or another, even when she wasn't looking for it, but Amirah didn't think that was her so much as it was the world tin which she moved. People wanted her dead. Most of them had good reason, too. It was no different for Thatcher.

If things ever came to a head between the two of them it was anybody's guess as to whether or not there would be any survivors. Thatcher and Amirah were both of a significant age for werewolves, and on top of that they both had extensive experience, not to mention training. They could seriously harm one another at the very least, if not outright kill each other, and Thatcher didn't doubt that there would be a considerable amount of blood spilled it things ever came to blows. For his part he hoped that didn't happen -- as much as he hoped for anything nowadays -- not only because Amirah was an ally but because it would be a shame to take another hunter out of the race. Their interests had aligned and coincided several times over the years and they'd worked together enough times for Thatcher to know that he would be losing a valuable ally if anything ever happened between them.
Thatcher's smile was grim, as they so often were. His nod was small, succinct. She wasn't wrong about that, they both had enemies and plenty of them, powerful ones at that. "Yet here we are," he said to her then, sounding as arrogant as he was ever likely to sound, and even then it wasn't so much arrogance as it was a well-earned confidence. "Still standing." Still pursuing their goals, with single-minded and obsessive focus.
