The work itself kept Nick on his toes more than he thought a partner ever could. If he hated his job, he wouldn’t do a good job. He was certain of that. He could practically feel the bottom of his stomach give out when he was told that, not only would he have to be working with a partner, but it would be the new guy rather than someone whose quality of work he actually knew. Oh, he knew for a fact that Alan never would have hired Boyd if he wasn’t suitably impressed with his work, but on a story this big, he really would have preferred to work with someone he actually knew. It was nothing against the newcomer, but Nick wasn’t looking forward to this. Still, the fact that Alan was trusting him with showing the new guy the ropes meant that he trusted him.
Even if he hadn’t caught the tone, Nick wouldn’t have argued, as much as he might have wanted to- as desperate as he was to. The thoughts of having to work with a partner seemed to fly out the window at hearing who the secret witness was and he raised an eyebrow just a fraction of an inch at the news, but he thought he took it professionally when he gave a tight little nod and said, “Don’t worry. I’ll keep it under wraps until it’s time to let everyone else know.”
