“Yeah, it’s Nate. And that’s what I said… about being careful.” Cassidy sighed quietly. Her shoulder slumped a little. “I mean, I told her she could talk to Nate about it, at least to get it off her shoulders or whatever, but I know how I’d feel if I was in her shoes. I’d feel like an idiot going up to him to tell him that I was attracted to him or something, especially since…”
She trailed off a little, biting her lip in hesitation. Should she tell Heidi what had really happened in the music room? She realised she might as well, and so, persisted, “Well, she said maybe she felt a little bit territorial, which might have made the ‘new recruit’ freak out the way she did. Her wolf got all edgy when the newbie got too close to Nate… y’know?”

"Oh, I see....my, that's very unusual." Heidi was frankly surprised. She was fairly certain, now, that Cass was talking not about herself but about Sissy, and the notion of quiet little Sissy getting territorial over someone who was not, technically, her own -- it was slightly out of the ordinary, to say the least. "Well, perhaps when I meet her myself I'll find out what happened, there. In the meantime, perhaps it's best not to say anything to Nate just yet. It could just be a passing thing influenced by the moon, or something of that nature."

Cassidy wasn’t sure whether or not she should hope Heidi was right. “Maybe,” she agreed, regardless of her conflicting feelings on the matter. “She’d come talk to you herself,” she persisted, knowing the Beta female would understand who she meant, “but she probably feels kinda silly about the whole thing.” Offering a smile, she sat up a little straighter in her seat.
“But I told her you’d be cool about it.” She smiled more fully. “Besides, it’s not like you’d make fun of her.”

"Mm, no, that's Steven's department," Heidi teased. She smiled, however. "I appreciate the vote of confidence. Of course I wouldn't say anything to her about it....and I won't mention it to Nate or anyone else, either. So if she wants to come and talk to me directly, she's welcome to do so, of course."

Cassidy smiled again, sighing once more as she realised there wasn't really much to be done about the situation other than what Heidi had just said; really, they just had to wait and see if it blew over.
"Thanks, Heidi," she said gratefully, rising from her chair, albeit somewhat slowly, in case the Beta female had anything to add. "I should probably get back to my room and tell her... y'know, what you said."

"Oh, you're welcome, dear," Heidi replied, smiling. "Anything I can do to help. If Si-- if she wants to come and talk to me herself, tell her she's welcome; but if she doesn't feel comfortable, I understand."

Heidi had rebooted the computer after Cassidy left, but now she paused in her work, and sniffed. Unfamiliar scent. A moment later, the source of the unfamiliar scent peered cautiously around the doorframe and inquired, "Hello?"
The Beta female peered at her very briefly before standing up. "Let me guess...you must be Mara." She smiled. "Welcome to the Hyperion; I'm Heidi."

Mara took in the blonde woman from the doorway for a minute before stepping into the room. "Sorry if I'm bothering you." She extended her hand. "You'd be right - I'm Mara. Mara Harper."
Heidi held out her own hand to shake. "Heidi Fischer. Pleased to meet you. Are you settling in all right?"
Mara gave a laugh. "Well, seems like it. Save a near explosion when I met two nice girls - ladies- er - pack members?... earlier..." She gave a sheepish shrug. "Am I disturbing you?"
"Oh, think nothing of it. The project's driving me crazy anyway, I don't mind taking a break." She waved for Mara to sit, thinking about the 'explosion.' That must have been what Cass meant. "So who all have you met so far?"
"Cole of course - he's an ace sort of a bloke. Nate - nice doctor, treated my arm for me, and his wonderful dog - Brock." She paused, thinking. "Dia, Molly -- Jeremy, I think... he was eating and seemed kind of distracted..." She paused thinking. "Oh, and Aiden, and Kyle came to the gallery today, with...two others." She frowned. "And a Cassidy and a Sissy, but I don't know that they like me - I don't know what I did wrong."
"Ah, yes. I wouldn't worry yourself too much on Cass and Sissy's score," Heidi said reassuringly. "I had a bit of a chat about that with one of them...trust me when I say that what happened wasn't your fault. I think we can safely say that it won't happen again. Sounds like you've met quite a few of us, then." She noted the absence of Steven's name from the list, but elected not to call attention to it.
"Yes. I think I should probably begin more conversations with the fact that I feel really unstable now though." She looked sheepish. "And I'm an empath, so for some reason, my wolf is even more sensitive - being among other wolves - well - it's happy and..." she shrugged. "Everyone but me here seems calm."
"It takes some time," Heidi assured her. "I came in as a rogue over a hundred years ago, and I remember how difficult it was. It seems like you're an outsider, and to some extent perhaps you are. But they're a very welcoming group; you'll feel at home before you know it."
Mara frowned. "What's a rogue?"
"A wolf without a pack -- what you were until today."
"I see." Mara frowned. "Is that a threatening thing to be? Or are werewolves just better in packs?"
"It's not a bad thing to be a rogue," Heidi replied thoughtfully. "I survived as one for a long time. But we have a lot in common with regular wolves in the wild -- we really do better in packs. We can protect each other, provide companionship and caring."
Mara nodded quietly. "Is it weird that I feel more in control - than I have in...well, since I was bitten last year?"
"No. That's really rather normal, in truth. You feel more in control because you have less to fear, now."
"I'm not going to hurt anyone here, no." Mara glanced at the walls of Heidi's office, noticing several small frames. "That picture was taken with one of the first styles of camera. It's a beautiful preserva- wait. That's you." She looked at it more carefully. "So you're old... like Cole."
"I've lost track of my exact age," Heidi replied modestly. "But I'm close to 630."
Mara sat down rather quickly. "And...you were born that way? Like Cole was?"
Heidi shook her head. "Cole and Dia and Steven -- the other Beta -- they're all what we call pureborn. I'm like you; I was bitten."
"Pureborn. That doesn't sound very... nice." Mara considered. "So...you've been where I am."
"A very long time ago, yes. Now, being pureborn and being bitten doesn't make any difference in any important way," Heidi added, wanting Mara to understand that. "Neither is any better or worse than the other. Just like no human skin color is better than any other. The only difference it makes is that pureborn wolves have, or had, parents who lived this sort of life and could help them understand it."
"Lucky buggers." Mara regarded the female infront of her seriously. "I hope you don't mind my asking, but I have one more question - heh - for now...but... My wolf was willing to defer to Cole. To Dia. To you even, I can feel it. It's...content." She bit her lip. "What the hell is that about?"
"Your wolf understands the hierarchy of the pack. The Alphas lead. The Betas back up the Alphas. You'd see the same thing in wolves in the wild." Heidi smiled. "All it really means is that your wolf feels like it belongs here."
Mara considered that, and inside her she could feel her wolf's energy. It seemed almost to agree with Heidi in her subconcious. It's going to be a job getting used to the fact that I am one person with you in there... "Well, I imagine things get a big strained during the next week... I don't want to keep you from what you were doing." Mara was hesitant to rise though - the thought of talking to someone who was bitten was almost a tangible thrill.

Before Heidi could reassure Mara that she didn't need to rush off, she paused, and sniffed at the air. "Steven?" she called, knowing he was close.
He was on his way through the hallway, making his usual rounds, when she called to him. One dark eyebrow quirking slightly, he followed her voice, sticking his head in. "Yeah?"
"I thought I smelled you. Mara Harper, Steven Manning. This is the newest member of the fold," she told him, gesturing between the two in an introductory fashion.
Steven offered a light, welcoming smile and a nod in response. "Nice to meet ya'," he murmured, his accent slipping ever-so-slightly, as usual.
"G'day," Mara replied, nodding and smiling in return.
"Steven is the other Beta, as I mentioned," Heidi said. "He's fond of wandering, but not so fond of shoes."
The male chuckled and smirked, giving a shrug. "They're not my style."
"Are you heading downstairs? Nate's in the music room."
He shook his head. "Hadn't thought about it. Just making the rounds."
"Well, if you go down, tell my sweetheart I'll be down to see him before he leaves." Heidi chuckled to herself; in response to Mara's questioning glance, she added simply, "Brock."
He had been slightly startled by the statement at first, but the explanation made him chuckle. Shaking his head, he gave a little wave to the two before heading off again.
"And that was Steven," Heidi said once he was gone. "Bit of a pest, really, but a good guy."
Done with Steven.

Mara gave a short laugh. "Is he always like that?"
"Like what?" Heidi grinned.
"Brisk. Must make him an interesting boyfriend."
"Oh, he's sometimes very long-winded. I wouldn't know about the boyfriend part, though."
Mara nodded, thinking that the emotions around her for the moment had been a little too intense for non-mates. Maybe not mates, but there's something weird there. Her wolf seemed almost to laugh and the emotion felt like warmth in her body. Seemed like Heidi was right. "Well, Cole mentioned something about a dark room, and I am hoping to find Cassidy and Sissy again... I would like to talk with them, just to make sure myself that there are no hard feelings. I don't want to begin badly when I could be with you all for.... a long time."
"Well, I hope you will be," Heidi replied cheerfully. "I believe the girls are in Cassidy's bedroom -- at least, that's the last place I know them to have been." She gave Mara the room number and told her how to find it. "I'm not sure where the darkroom is, but Cole can direct you."
"I might just find it for myself." She stood and smiled. "It was a pleasure meeting you. I'll be seein' ya, mate." With that, she stood up.
"Pleasure to meet you too." Heidi returned the smile. "If you need anything, just holler."
Mara gave a wave and stepped back out into the hallway.

Heidi had reached the conclusion almost at once that she liked this new wolf. Mara came across as a very sensible and amiable individual. Of course, Heidi had been predisposed to like her ever since she saw the photograph Marion had showed her and Cole; anyone who was so gifted artistically was the sort of person Heidi would want to associate with.
Once Mara was out of sight, she decided to do exactly what she had said she would -- go down to the music room to greet Nate and her "sweetheart," Brock. A little canine affection would not go amiss, nor would Nate's friendly chatter.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The first night of the full moon was easier than the second, probably because it was the tiniest fraction not full, Heidi supposed. The third was much like the first. It was the second that was to be dreaded.
After six hundred years of being what she was, the Beta female was generally pretty controlled during the difficult phase. Of course, for Heidi, self-control was a way of life, but because of the memories of how she used to lose all control during those three days, she tended to exert herself a bit more. The result was that she was even more tightly wound than normal, a bit stern and very rigid.
She made a point of avoiding Steven as much as possible during those three days -- they drove each other absolutely insane.
She heard the loudspeaker call for the younger wolves to report to the basement, and decided that a short patrol of the halls was in order to make sure everyone else was accounted for. No one was allowed to leave the hotel without checking with Cole under normal circumstances, and no one was permitted to leave at all during the three days of the moon, but it would give her prowling wolf something to do besides, well, prowl in her head.

Heidi, as she often told younger wolves, had a strict rule about not working during the full moon, and she adhered to it. She was too flighty, too uncertain, and sometimes (last night being a prime example) too willing to give in to the little voice that said she deserved a break.
It would have surprised some of them to know, however, that she had a few games on her hard drive. Steven had his Nintendo; Heidi had her PC. She put the CD for the game "Pharaoh" into the drive and booted it up. She liked the ancient civilization city-building games; "Pharaoh" and "Zeus" were intelligent and yet entertaining.
Time to check on the progress of that Sphinx she was constructing.

Continued from: The Courtyard
Jess had been only mildly surprised to find herself outside the Beta female’s office. She supposed Heidi had been on her mind since the conversation they had shared in the courtyard earlier in the day. There was nothing pressing she needed to discuss with the other wolf, nothing that warranted an official visit to the office but from what she could tell, Heidi was alone in the office and hopefully wouldn’t mind the company. She had seemed slightly flustered earlier as well and it was only natural for a pack wolf to want to reassure themselves that the Beta was okay.
“Hello Heidi,” Jess greeted, after she had knocked, the door swinging gently open on the subtle force of her actions. She dipped her head in acknowledgment of the blond female, a faint smile on her face as she did.

Heidi looked up from the consultation she was making with the chief overseer in her little Egyptian city. "Jess, hi. Come on in." She was, herself, mildly surprised to see the younger female, but it was certainly not an unpleasant surprise.
"I'm just toying around with this program about ancient Egypt. Please, have a seat." She waved her hand toward one of the extra chairs, smiling good-naturedly. "To what do I owe the pleasure?"
