Toby didn't think his talent -- if it could be called that; he was reluctant to use that word in regards to himself, it seemed too bold somehow -- even begun to compare to those like Blake who could really make things, construct something out of almost nothing and bring it to life. The times when he had seen the older male's work had always left Toby breathless with awe, beyond impressed with what Blake had managed to capture in his sculptures. There was always so much life in them, despite the fact that they would never move; the older male always managed to capture a sense of movement in his pieces, and if Toby had been capable he might have been jealous. As it was he was just impressed, every single time, and only wished there were more sculptures on show around the hotel. They probably took a long time to make though, he understood, certainly much longer than his drawings, so it made sense that there weren't more pieces on display.
Toby had seen an owl before, he had seen a few, but it had been a long time. They weren't seen all that much in cities like Los Angeles, at least not as far as he knew; if they were out there somewhere then they were skilled at keeping themselves hidden. It wouldn't be a good place for them anyway. They belonged in places like woods and forests, or out in the country where they had barns and stables to make their nests. Maybe one day soon they could organise a trip to the zoo. There were bound to be owls there, and then Madison could see one up close. "You'd need a really big newspaper to splat them," Toby said, his eyes widening a little. "But then that would be cruel. They wouldn't mean to scare people." He paused. "Or gross them out." At that he pulled a face, his nose scrunching up a little.

If Madison ever found out what Toby thought of his talent then she would have to try and convince him that he was really good, comparing himself to someone who worked in a different medium wasn't fair really. It just wasn't possible to compare drawings to sculptures, sure they were both forms of art but they were totally different and made people feel different things, you just couldn't compare them. Personally Madison was a bigger fan of drawings and paintings over sculptures, maybe she was biased because that was what Toby did but she really did prefer things on paper. She could never do what he did, sure she could tell a story but then so could anybody with a little bit of imagination, what Toby did was different it took a level of skill that she could only dream of having. If she thought it would help she would tell him that but she knew that there was really no telling him how good he was or how envious she was of his particular talents.
Madison hadn't lived anywhere that owls might be for many years so it wasn't surprising she hadn't seen one before. For all she knew she'd been within a few feet of an owl and never realised it as they were excellent at keeping themselves hidden from pretty much every sense. She would be shocked if she saw one in the city, the lights were too bright and she didn't imagine there would be much prey for them either, also there weren't really many trees for them. Madison would love to see one even if it was a zoo, maybe they could get a trip organised so that she could see one and anyone else that hadn't. "You think they'd be giant?" she said with really wide eyes. "They might want to scare people, you don't know." She looked at her friend and screwed up her face a little in disgust. "I would definitely be grossed out by a were spider running at me." Her face mirroring the look on her friends face as she considered the idea of a were spider running at her.

The thing about pictures was that they could go anywhere, sculptures required forward thinking and more planning than a picture, whether it be painted or sketched or lined in with pencils and inks. Toby liked the convenience of pictures, how he could take them from the book they'd been drawn in and put them anywhere, in or out of the frame. They could go on a wall, on a dresser, on a table. So long as you had space you could display a picture. That didn't mean he didn't wish he could sculpt, he did and that wouldn't change, but he would always prefer his own medium. It wasn't as grand or impressive as what Blake could do but it was his and he enjoyed it and at the end of the day that was the most important thing.
A trip to the zoo would be an adventure, there was no denying that. Animals had varying reactions to werewolves, from indifference -- cats in particular were indifferent to their race, Toby had noticed -- to aggression -- dogs, for example, were more often than not nervous or confused by werewolves and that tended to make them foul-tempered -- but he wasn't sure how things like tigers and monkeys and elephants would feel about them. Maybe one day a group of them could take a trip and find out first-hand and hopefully not end up regretting it afterwards. "Well werewolves are big," Toby said by way of explanation. "I mean, I'm not big as a wolf but lots of wolves are." His shoulders lifted and dropped in a shrug and he smiled a little sheepishly.

The fact that pictures could go anywhere was part of the appeal really. You didn't have to worry about there being enough room to fit a picture like you did with a sculpture. It meant that you could fill up a relatively small space with more than just one thing; you could paper a wall with drawings and pictures that showed all the things and people that you loved. You could change a cold unwelcoming area into a somewhere warm and loving, just by displaying pictures that evoked emotions and feelings you could change a room into something so much better than it had been before. You could do that with a sculpture but it was harder to do, they took up more room and could sometimes be imposing in ways that pictures weren't.
Madison loved an adventure and would never pass up the opportunity to have one. There was no telling what would happen at a zoo of course, they might upset the animals, dogs were bad enough when they got wound up by the presence of a werewolf but large predators could be so much worse, although zoo animals might just take it in their stride as they were so close to other animals that they wouldn't naturally live near. Madison really hoped that they could arrange a trip she just hoped that it wouldn't end badly. "Some werewolves are big but then if you think about it so are wild wolves so maybe size depends on the wild animal," she said as she thought about it all. "I'm not that big either, maybe werespiders are small because spiders are pretty small." She smiled at her friend and hoped that he'd agree with her logic. She really didn't like the idea of massive werespiders running around.

It depended on the picture really. Some pictures could be pretty big and that wasn't just paintings and drawings but photographs too. Toby had seen some pretty extravagantly sized ones in the past that had made him wonder just why something needed to be so large but since it hadn't been his place to question someone else's decision he had kept his mouth shut. Still, it made him wonder. Sometimes small things were much better, it wasn't so much of a struggle to find somewhere to put them and they were much easier to store if you ever needed to do that.
Maybe if -- when they went to a zoo -- they split up into little groups of twos and threes it wouldn't be so stressful or confusing for the animals. As a big group they would be much more like a pack, a bigger threat that animals would pick up on and react two, but in pairs and threes they wouldn't be nearly so imposing, surely. There was only one way to find out, ultimately, and Toby was already looking forward to having to chance to discover these things first-hand. Madison had a point and Toby showed it with a slow nod as if he was digesting the information she had presented to him and he made a small, thoughtful noise in the pack of his throat to accompany it. "I guess there's no way to know, which is probably a good thing. Whatever size they were, werespiders would be kind of freaky."

Madison really didn't see the need for some pictures to be so large, she'd seen some that just took up way too much room and couldn't have been practical for so many reasons but like her friend she'd not said anything because at the end of the day what did she know. Maybe there was a very good reason for them being so large, it made them easier to see so maybe that was the appeal to others. Madison didn't have to worry about that but that didn't mean there weren't people out there who did. She'd heard the saying about good things coming in small packages and when it came to pictures that did seem to be true, it just made it so much easier to display them and store them and everyone liked things to be easy.
She really did hope they could sort out a trip to the zoo, surely they'd be enough of them that wanted to go that it would be okay and maybe someone had been to a zoo so would know how the animals would react. Splitting into smaller groups would certainly be one way to reduce the stress or confusion for the animals and it would probably draw less attention from any humans there. A big group often caused them to get some funny looks from humans so anything they could do to prevent that was always good. Madison saw her friend's nod and smiled softly at him. "I guess you're right. I think we're better off not knowing. I think that's enough talk about werespiders don't you?"

Toby drew pictures of all sizes, though he usually stuck to the pages of his sketchbooks, but he had plenty of sizes of those and that gave him plenty of room to play around. Sometimes he filled pages with lots of little drawings but those were always difficult to divide for that reason, he couldn't very well take one sketch from the page and give it to someone, not unless he cut the page up and for some reason that always made him feel a little anxious. Maybe he would have to invest in some smaller sketchbooks the next time there was a trip to the stores so he could draw people smaller pictures without having to worry about cutting up the pages afterwards.
There were plenty of people Toby could think of within the pack who would love a trip to the zoo, perhaps none more so than Susie, their newest arrival. Kids loved trips to the zoo, and what better way to help her feel like a normal kid than a very normal outing like most kids got to take? She would have more adults with her than most kids but then there were plenty of wolves within the pack who didn't act their age. Toby sometimes thought he was one of them. "Yeah," he agreed, pulling a face, shaking his head to add weight to the approval, though he realised after the fact that a nod might have worked better. "What about wereowls? Would they have limbs like a person or wings and legs like an owl?"
