The full moon had taken a lot out of Matthew Kennedy, the wolf breaking free of his human form despite his frantic attempts to keep himself in control. It had been another night of failure, a blow against himself and it didn’t matter that he knew logically he was too young, that he was far too young to control the beast during the nights of the moon. It still hurt every time his mind gave up fighting and let the wolf break out with a howl of triumphant and it had been the shame that had led him to flee from the basement as soon as he could to hide in the parking lot.
“You worry about things too much, you know that?”
“One of us has,” Matt replied, head resting against the side of the car. Beside him, Andrew laughed. It was a light, carefree laugh and it made Matt’s chest suddenly tighten, a sharp pain there. His twin was too pale looking; “You need more sun,” he said, looking away from Andy because if he looked too hard he might see that it wasn’t paleness at all, but instead near transparency. The transparency of a ghost.
He moved suddenly, pushing away from the car to move towards one of the vehicles near the back of the lot. Matt could vaguely remember someone complaining about the clutch on it a few days ago and he figured now was a good enough time to do something about it.

The traffic hadn’t been too horrendous for a change, but the temperature truly had skyrocketed. Nate had driven all the way from his apartment building with the windows rolled down and the sunroof popped open, air conditioning on full blast. Sure, the car’s somewhat old engine probably wouldn’t have appreciated the drag and strain from fighting the minimal breeze and running the air con., but Nate and Brock had needed it. Besides, Cole had always told him the pack’s resident mechanic could easily replace or repair whatever broke.
Speak of the devil.
Even with his shades over his eyes, Nate recognised the pack’s ‘grease monkey’ as he finished rolling into the lot, with its clear ‘Private Property’ signs and heavy wire fencing. Stopping the car in a free space, he opened the door, removing the sunglasses, and then let Brock out. The Husky shook out his grey and white coat, and then gave a bark of greeting to the werewolf across the lot seconds before skipping over to him, tongue lolling and tail wagging.

He had half turned at the sound of the car, easily recognizing the distinctive hum of the engine as belonging to Nate Wilder. The doctor always made Matt nervous, only increasing his natural skittish behaviour and making him wish he was anywhere but in the presence of a medical man. Not that Matt had anything against Nate – far from it, from what he had seen of the human, he seemed a very decent sort.
Matt crouched as the Husky neared him, a genuine smile on his face at the sight of the dog. Animals at least never pretended to be what they weren’t. He ran his hand over the thick fur, rubbing behind Brock’s ear and causing the dog’s tongue to loll even further out of his mouth, clearly pleased by the attention bestowed on him.
After a few moments he stood again, casting a shy glance in Nate’s direction and giving a jerky nod of greeting.

Nate had been told, not long after being employed by Cole himself, that Matt was distrustful and fearful of doctors, and that he shouldn’t take it personally; it was nothing he had done wrong, specifically, but the profession and those who bore the title of ‘doctor’ were cause for concern and wariness in the male werewolf. Nate had acknowledged all of that, making a mental note before he had gone home and made a literal, hand-written note. It wasn’t common knowledge that Nate kept a notebook locked in the safe in the bottom of his closet, but he liked to have those little details; werewolves, as a general rule, were very rarely allergic to anything, but certain pack members were distrustful of certain things, fearful of others — Nate liked to know where he stood with each one.
The fact that Matt could at least appreciate the company of Brock was some small relief, and Nate smiled as the Husky made himself known, giving Matt’s jaw a nudge as if to say ‘Hi! What do you have for me?’, tongue lolling energetically and tail wagging almost frantically.
Perhaps it wouldn’t be a bad idea to leave Brock out here with Matt while the werewolf worked on the car he crouched beside. The dog was well-trained, and wouldn’t go bolting out of the parking lot, at least not before Matt could see and call him back. Mind made up, Nate said politely, “Brock can keep you company while I head inside to see Cole.” He smiled again, doing his very best to seem harmless, and made to walk past, but keeping his distance so as not to make Matt skittish.

He nodded, the movement jerky and uncertain, hands returning to rub vigorously behind Brock’s ear, happy that not only was Nate keeping a respectful distance but also that the dog was going to keep him company.
“Do you want me to take a look at your car?” Matt asked softly, carefully keeping the dog in-between himself and the doctor, even if he didn’t realise it. It was a question he asked every time a group of the pack returned from whatever type of outing, in case something had gone wrong with the vehicle or if they had felt something had seemed a little ‘off’, indicating something was about to go wrong. Even if they turned him down, Matt would generally check it over, just to reassure himself. He might not have much left but he still had his pride of his work.
While Nate wasn’t technically part of the pack, he was connected to it and job aside that meant he was deserving of anything the pack could do for him.

Nate never liked to push his luck, even when he wasn’t dealing with werewolves; patients of any description, even family members of the wounded or recently deceased, could be volatile and unpredictable, and he knew from experience not to underestimate their potential to be spontaneous and even dangerous, whether it be to themselves or him personally. He didn’t expect Matt to attack him, or anything so primal, but he knew that pushing to any degree was unwise and uncalled for.
Glancing back towards his car, keeping his movements calm and smooth and non-confrontational, he looked back towards the werewolf with a nod and a pleasant smile. “Sure, it’s been a while since I had it looked over. Thanks, Matt.”
Had he been aware of Matt’s line of thinking, what it was that brought him to offer to check his car, he honestly would have been flattered, in his own way, as odd as it seemed; he was very much not part of the pack, he knew, so to be thought of as deserving of the same consideration and attention would really something of a big deal for him.

If pressed or pushed somehow by Nate, it was more likely that the flight instinct would be stronger in the male werewolf, as opposed to the fight urge. Part of him knew that the doctor wouldn’t push however and that part was grateful. As much as it was possible for him to like and trust someone of the medical profession he honestly liked and trusted Nath. He was still happier the further apart the two were however.
For a moment his smile became larger and more relaxed, pleased that his offer had been accepted and that it meant he got to play around with a new car – he’d not poked through one of Nate’s make in far too long. The shutters closed back down around his face soon enough however and he bobbed his head back down to look at Brock, keeping his eyes fixed on the dog although still acutely aware of his surroundings. “No problem.”

Nate smiled back, nodding his head. “Keep Brock out of trouble,” he quipped casually and lightly, glancing once back towards his car. “If he becomes a handful, just toss him in the lobby. He can be a bit too energetic sometimes.” But of course, Matt knew that; everyone in the pack who had ever met the Husky knew that. It just seemed like the right thing to say.
With that, though, he was simply standing around taking up space, which he hated to do. He especially hated doing it at work, if only because a hospital was no place to idle around as if you didn’t have a care in the world. Giving Matt a small wave, he turned and headed for the tall building looming alongside the parking lot.

He watched Nate leave, attention fixed on the doctor until he was out of sight. Even then, Matt didn’t allow himself to really relax until the scent of the human had faded enough for him to be sure that he wouldn’t suddenly reappear without warning. Matt glanced down at Brock, smiling softly at the dog and giving him a last rub behind the ears. As much as he would have liked to spend the next hour of so just making a fuss of the dog, there was things to do.
Andrew had always been one for punctuality and getting things done when he said he would get them done and with that thought in his mind he headed over to Nate’s car, Brock trotting along side him. It would be best to check over that car first, make sure everything was working okay before returning to the pervious one so if Nate came back soon, he would have to be kept waiting.

Still spying it up, Jeremy slid out to the parking garage, still keeping to the wall as if that made him invisible to all present. Which meant for the moment he was either ignoring the presence of both Matt and Brock or wasn't registering them at all in the first place. There were probably even odds for both options- either he was so engrossed in his imagination nothing else could encroach or acknowledging that something else had already encroached would ruin the effect entirely. Hmm.. Sneak, sneak, sneak…

Every now and then, Matt would lean down to pat Brock on the head, taking care not to touch the dog with his dirty hand, instead wiping ineffectively at his clothing whenever he noticed how bad his hands were getting. It wasn’t even as though there was anything really bad or particularly messy he was fiddling about with at the moment, he certainly wasn’t playing with the oil. Cars were just messy things under the bonnet.
He peered around the side of the bonnet as the scent of Jeremy finally was strong enough to recognize over the many smells of the car. Matt stared him in bemusement, watching the silent act as the other wolf slid along the garage wall. He rarely had any idea what was going on in Jeremy’s head but Matt was forced to admit, this time at least it was amusing.

Dude, you can't see him. He is invisible like ninja! Or maybe not, which he probably realized somewhere deep down. In any event, it still didn't stop him from freezing in his tracks when he glanced over and realized that Matt was looking in his direction. If he's absolutely still, he can't be seen, right? Dangit, Matt's still looking and he has that 'I can see you' look on his face. Time to play this one off. "Hey Matt, when'd you get here?" Because the other wolf hadn't been in here when he came into the garage in the first place, right? Cue the good natured, goofy grin.

If Matt had realised exactly what Jeremy had been doing then he would have course ducked his head down and acted as though he had no idea the other wolf was even there. Just because Matt wasn’t the sort to start something silly didn’t mean he was boring enough not to play along with whatever might be going on around him. Anyway, he’d long ago learned that not doing what Jeremy expected simply made the whole thing more confusing – it wasn’t as though it was much of a hardship to do whatever the historian had in his mind today.
“Hey Jeremy,” Matt replied, smile twitching on his lips at the choice of words. It would be pointless to point out he’d been there far longer than Jeremy and so he simply shrugged, looking back to the car for a moment to reassure himself that nothing terrible was going to happen to it if he relaxed his guard. “Oh, just a moment or so ago.”

Phew. Totally slid by on that one. Sweet. But huh….that means now he needed to come up with a reason for being in the garage besides the sooper seekrit mission. Hmm… "Cool! Me too!" That goofy trademark grin was in full effect. It's quite likely Jeremy knew his little ruse really wasn't fooling anyone, but was simply entertained enough to continue playing along with his own game for the heck of it. "Hey, you know where everything is around here. I need a……thing." Here's where Jeremy makes a vague mime of using a screwdriver. Exactly what does he need a screwdriver for? Does he even REALLY need a screwdriver? The world may never know.

Matt’s eyebrow climbed even higher at Jeremy’s request, inwardly wondering just what on earth he could possibly need a screwdriver for. It wasn’t the most dangerous of tools around the garage – Matt shuddered to think of what mischief could be caused with some of them – and while he knew Jeremy could no doubt come up with some extremely creative uses for the item, he was hardly going to deny him use of it.
“What size?” Matt moved around the car as he spoke, small grin on his face. It was impossible really to keep one off your face when talking to Jeremy, who seemed to be an endless bundle of manic energy and somewhat zany thoughts. The young wolf bent down by one of his tool boxes and flipped it open, before carefully rooting through the different trays inside to find the one holding his screwdrivers. “I’ve got lots of choice for you.” That was perhaps, something of an understatement, at least a dozen lining the level, each in a different size and in most cases, having a different coloured handle – it helped Matt remember which was used for what if he could colour code them in his mind.
