It had been the wrong thing to say, cold and heartless, he knew that deep down beneath the fear of losing someone he cared about so much. If Lee hadn't stepped in Casey wasn't sure what would have happened then, it was very possible he would have picked her up and carried her out with her fighting every moment of it. He was prioritising, somewhat selfishly putting the life of one packmate over that of another but he was terrified of losing Regina, she had to understand that. Lee had to see it too.
Casey turned his eyes on the other male, his breathing short and sharp through his nostrils with his jaw clenched the way it was. Quickly and with the efficiency not only of a wolf but of a fighter he considered the option Lee had presented and after only a few seconds he gave a nod. A single dip of his head. "Be careful," he said to Lee, holding his eyes, telling him with that intense gaze that they had better see one another out in the parking lot or there would be hell to pay.

Lee clapped his hand against Casey's shoulder and nodded back to him, he reached out and gave Regina's hand a light squeeze too and then her took off. Krysti's room was down in the other direction and up a couple of floors so he had to move it. Regina would be all right with Case, and there was no need to worry about the fighter, he knew what he was doing. Now his mind could focus on Krysti herself.
They all knew fire terrified her more than most wolves and with good reason. He could just about picture the terror in her eyes while the walls around her burned and his chest seemed to get all tight and itchy at the thought of it. He had to find her. She had to be okay. She had to be okay. That became his mantra as she scaled a fragile looking set of stairs towards the next floor. There was just no thinking about it any other way. Lee didn't know what he would do if she wasn't okay, so he put that out of his head.
Her room was close by, the end of the hall he was in now. One right and two lefts. Only Lee didn't get that far. He could see her, huddled in the middle of a collapsing hallway like she'd been running, trying to get out and frozen. There was a gaping chasm between them, though.
"Krysti," he yelled for her attention. "Krysti, it's okay. I'm-- stay there, I'm comin' to get you." Lee back up a few paces, took a steadying, hot breath, embers filling his lungs and then he ran forwards and launched himself over, landing and rolling messily near her.

Regina watched as Lee turned and ran off to find Krystiana, a mixed feeling of relief and worry bursting through her. The thought that it could be the last time that she saw Lee was too much to bear so she turned her dark eyes on Casey instead; she was upset with him and annoyed, but even with the harshness of his voice still ringing in her ears she knew that he was just worried, that he was just trying to look out for her and really she was glad to have him with her.
Huffing a dirty breath of air she grabbed Casey's arm, "Come on," she said, dragging him down the hallway. "He's probably in his room," she called over her shoulder, picking her way through debris.

There was a small rational part of her that knew she needed to get out, that she needed to find the others and escape but her fear had pinned her in place and she couldn't move. She wanted to find Regina, Casey and Lee but she wasn't able to move from the spot she'd sat down, her fear had paralysed her and there was nothing she could do to break its hold on her.
She could hear the fire getting closer and devouring more of the building around her, she even heard part of the floor give way not far from where she had stopped but even that didn't encourage her to get up and move. She just clutched the Care Bear tighter to her and sobbed softly against it. She was going to die here and even knowing that she couldn't get up and move. The thought of never seeing her friends made her cry more, she didn't want to die here alone. If the others had been with her she wouldn't have allowed her fear to cripple her but she'd been alone when the fire had broken out.
She wanted to see her friends again, she wanted to see Lee again, she didn't want to die here alone but she didn't think she was strong enough to break through her fear without help. A noise close by made her stop crying for a moment, it sounded like someone running but she couldn't tell where they were or if they were getting closer or further away.
The sound of someone calling her name made her head turn towards the source. Through the smoke she could see Lee. "Lee?" she said shakily, she couldn't believe it was really him. She nodded to let him know that she'd heard him tell her to stay where she was. She thought he'd try and find another way round as he started to back up a little but then she watched in horror as he ran forward again and launched into the air. She held her breath as he jumped, part of her fearing that he wouldn't make it and she'd see him fall to his death. Krysti closed her eyes tightly as she waited, she couldn't watch in case he did fall. The sounds of him landing telling her it was safe for her to open her eyes again. She looked up at him with her eyes filled with tears. He'd come for her, that thought only made fresh tears fall as she came to the realisation that she wouldn't die here.

Casey watched Lee go, hating that they were splitting up but his friend was right, this was the best way to get everyone out, themselves included. Lee would find Krysti and Casey would stay with Regina. It made sense, it was the best course of action, and it was simple enough in theory. It was just a matter of getting around all the dangers on their way to their respective targets and escaping the burning building again. Easier said than done, especially when things were getting progressively worse, the whole structure was weakening all around them, creaking and cracking and groaning angrily.
As Regina went he followed, coming up to her side and staying there, shifting his arm out of her grip but only so he could find her hand with his own and take hold. "Stay close," he said to her, figuring out exactly where they were from familiar sights and the path they'd taken to this point and mapping their way to Mikhail's room, much as he suspected Regina was doing as well. They weren't far away now, it was just one more bend and then a straight run to his door.

Lee crouched down next to Krysti, smiling at her despite the rolling smoke coming off the walls. He was filthy with smoke and sweat, his blonde hair plastered dark to his head, streaks of sweat running down his temples and neck. She was crying. And she'd been crying a lot. But he tried not to focus on that too much, he was there now after all, he could get her out. "It's gonna be okay, Krys, yeah? I'm here, it's gonna be fine."
He held out a hand for her, placing his other hand on her back gently, between her shoulder blades in what he really hoped was a comforting kind of touch and not something that was going to make her feel more panicked or anything. He hoped his presence was enough for her to stop crying. "Are you hurt? Can you walk?" he glanced down the hall, "We're gonna go meet up with Regina and Casey."

Krysti couldn't help but smile slightly when she saw Lee's smile. She took in the way he looked, the filthy from the fire and the sweat that caused his hair to stick to his head and it made her wonder just how bad she must look. She'd been sat in the smoky hallway for what seemed like forever and she'd been crying, no doubt the tears had made tracks in the soot that had to be covering her face but it didn't matter. Lee was here and he was going to get her out. "Yeah," she said softly in reply to him, her voice shaking slightly as she spoke.
She took hold of the hand he held out to her and felt some of the fear slip away, the feel of his hand on her back helped as well, she took comfort from that touch and tried to get herself together more. She felt the tears slowing, she knew she was safe now that he was here. "No," she said, her voice not shaking as much as it had been moments ago. "I don't know," she admitted to him, she didn't want to feel so helpless but she hated fire so much. At the mention of Regina and Casey she nodded slightly. Everything was going to be okay, she knew this because Lee had told her as much and she knew he wouldn't lie to her.

Casey didn't need to tell her to stay close more than once, that was exactly what she planed to do. His hand holding her was reassuring and she grasped him back firmly, quietly desperate in a way. Regina wasn't nuts and she wasn't stupid, she was scared by what was happening around them, but the fire and the attackers but she had also made a promise and she cared about her pack enough to be able to quash all that.
As they moved she glanced at Casey, breathing harder than any werewolf ought to thanks to the thick air clogging her lungs. "Do you know what's going on?" she asked him. "Who's attacking us?"

"Hey, hey, hey," Lee said, smiling at her again, taking his hand from her back and using his dirty fingers to tuck some of her hair behind her ear, he didn't want her to panic, her didn't want her to get any more upset right now. "Don't worry about a thing, just stay with me, c'mon." Lee helped her to her feet and then hoisted her into his arms.
Krystiana was in no condition to move through the wreck of a burning building and her desperately didn't want to get separated from her now. No, he could get them both out, he just needed to keep hold of her. Lee turned away from the hole he'd crossed to get to her, not wanting to chance the unstable floor with another leap and the weight of the both of them. He would find another way for them. "You did good getting out of your room," he told her as they went.

Regina could be his anchor and if needs be he could be hers, it all depended on what they found but he would get her out of here. No matter what happened Casey was going to get her out and to safety. If they came across one of the pack's attackers then he would deal with it as best he could, he would put his life on the line if it meant sparing Regina harm and protecting her, keeping her safe, there was no question about that in his mind and as they went he kept his senses alert for any sign of them. It was a challenge with the fire, the stink of the soot and all manner of materials burning, the pressing heat from the flames, the waves of smoke billowing down the hallway, the shattering of glass and cracking of wood and god knew what else.
He had to fight to keep from coughing, his voice rough and scratchy, more like a growl than he would have liked for such a simple response when he said, "I haven't seen them up close. We got out before we ran into anyone." Thankfully. He'd seen at least one dead -- and mangled -- body in the parking lot, he couldn't even wrap his head around what it would take to do that to a werewolf. "Whoever they are," he went on, "they're ruthless and they won't stop until we're all dead. One way or another."

Casey was more than that. Casey was she strength, her rock. It wasn't like Regina to say it but his fierce determination was something that spurred her on even if it sometimes terrified her too; his ire could be horrifying to behold, but there was something heartening in it. Or perhaps Regina was just seeing what she wanted to see when it came to the male wolf. Either way, he was important to her and she was so glad of his company in what felt like this pit of hellfire. Hopefully they would not find themselves in combat, she didn't want him hurt defending her.
"God," she breathed, turning her face forwards again, raising an arm to shield her eyes from some swirling embers. Samson and Heather were both lying dead in the parking lot. How many more were dead inside this fizzling walls? How many of their packmates had been trapped and died alone and without hope? Regina didn't want to think about it too hard. "Let's be fast, then," she said.

She smiled back at him again, feeling a little less afraid than she had been, she met his eyes properly as he tucked some of her hair behind her ear. She knew nothing would happen to her now. "Okay," she said as he helped her to her feet and she didn't protest at all as he lifted her into his arms, she allowed herself to rest against him and took comfort in his presence.
She knew she was in no condition to move through what was left of the building and she was thankful that Lee understood that without making her feel bad about it. She trusted that he would get them out safely and back with their friends again. Krysti didn't even question him when he turned away from the way he'd come, she knew he'd find another way out for them that didn't mean having to leap over a hole in the floor. "I tried to get out," she said softly, "I couldn't go any further." She felt ashamed for having succumbed to her fear as quickly as she had.

If one thing could be said about Casey it was that he was unwavering, once he had set himself to a task there was no swaying him from that path, he became fixated, almost to the point of obsession, and right now he was fixated on Regina and her safety. She could count on him, she could rely on him in every way that mattered here and now in this awful place that had not so long ago been their home, their shelter, their sanctuary. Casey would keep hold of her, he would do his best to carry her through whatever lay ahead.
He couldn't hold back the fit of coughing then, the smoke had worked its way down to his lungs, attacking fiercely and it was a futile effort to clear it but one he caved to all the same. It hurt to cough like that but he had felt more than his fair share of pain over the years and it didn't take much for him to compartmentalise it and set it aside. "This way," he said roughly before setting off at a jog, steering Regina around a patch of floor he didn't trust, something about the colour of the carpet unnerved him, and from there it was a few steps to the bend and then he could see Mikhail's door. "There," he told her, lifting his other hand to point just before another fit of coughing took hold of him.

"That's okay," Lee said, shaking his head as he carried her around a corner up ahead. "You got far enough, didn't you? You got far enough for me to find you at least so that's good enough. You tried, and that's all anyone can ask." That was all anyone should ask anyway. Lee had spent a lot of time trying to live up to wild expectations, not necessarily good or scholarly ones, but expectations none the less and he had learnt the hard way that trying to adjust your behaviour to please someone else or meet what they deemed normal or necessary was a one way ticket to misery.
So Krystiana had got all froze up by the fire, so what? She'd done her best and now she was safe. Close to safe. Anyway. Lee would make sure she got all the way to safe now that he had her in his arms.

"I guess," she said as he moved them through the hallways. "What if you hadn't have found me though?" The thought was given voice before she'd even been able to stop it, she should have known he would find her but when she'd been hit by her fear it had seemed as if no one would find her. She knew that no one would think any less of her if they found out she'd frozen because of her fear but it didn't mean that she worried about it. There was a reason she hadn't told everyone why she hated fire so much or even that she did fear it as much as she did. She worried what people thought of her and that wasn't going to change any time soon.
Krysti still clung tightly to the Care Bear that had been in her arms when Lee had found her, her other arm around Lee to make it slightly easier for him to carry her. She felt safe with him here, even with the fire closing in on all sides. "How are we going to get out?"
