Continued from: Hallways with Derrick
Offering Derrick another of her smiles as she stepped through the door as he held it open for her, Kaleigh moved out onto the roof and gazed around, enjoying the advantage point and the feeling of the gentle morning sunshine on her face. Relaxing on the roof was the perfect way to spend the day, made even more so by the fact that Derrick was with her. No matter how good something might be, the experience was always made better by the presence of her mate.
Giving a stretch, she moved to a spot and stopped, turning abruptly so that her curls swung around her face. “How does here seem?”

Smiling lovingly as her curls swung the way they did, he nodded. “Perfect.” Moving over to shake out the blanket, he took in a deep lungful of the open air as he strode. The roof was high enough from the surrounding streets for the sounds of the city itself to be muted, and therefore, easily ignored, even to the sensitive ears of a werewolf, and the higher one went, the cleaner the air seemed to breathe. All in all, it was definitely shaping up to be a good idea to spend the morning on the roof.
When the blanket was settled, he granted his mate another smile, and kissed her briefly but affectionately, before lowering himself to the patch she had chosen for their lounging. The sun wasn’t too high in the sky yet, and as such, the temperature was bearable. He never held much faith in weather reports, and as such, rarely listened to them, so he had no idea as to what the day held; they would just wait and see.

Settling down beside Derrick with a smile, Kaleigh put her arms behind her a bit, palms on the blanket, and leaned back, letting her arms support her, tilting her head back slightly and looking up at the morning sky. True, morning in the city was nothing like a morning out in the woods, but this was nice, too and she could definitely continue to live with it. After all, the city was where the pack was and where the pack was, they were safe. That was more than enough to convince Kaleigh that mornings in the woods was overrated because, as much as she had always enjoyed that, she enjoyed knowing that they didn’t have to look over their shoulders at every turn even more.
Tilting her head slightly, she rested it lightly against Derrick’s shoulder, studying the sky. Like Derrick, she ignored the sounds from the street below, finding it easy enough to do. Right now, to her at least, it was just her, Derrick and the sky- quite a lovely arrangement if she did say so herself.

Draping an arm around his mate’s shoulders after stroking it softly up her back, Derrick gave a light, almost inaudible sigh. Up above the streets, it seemed almost impossible, from the level of noise, and the cleanness of the air, that they were in such a hectic, populated city such as Los Angeles. Though there were many tower blocks and sky scrapers that he could see from where they sat, there was an odd peace hanging about the rooftop that he was finding very enjoyable indeed.
He said nothing, because there were no words that needed to be said. Between Kaleigh and himself, that was often the case. They understood one another on such a level that words were often obsolete; things were left unsaid because they already knew what was going through the other’s mind, just from the way their smile shifted, or the look in their eyes, or the way they held themselves physically. It was something about their bond that he admired greatly.

Kaleigh leaned just a bit more into Derrick, her eyes still on the sky. A flock of birds, gleaming white against the morning sky, flew by high overhead. She knew that there were some who would not be able to understand how the silence that sometimes settled over the two of them could be enjoyable, but that was just how it was. Kaleigh and Derrick didn’t need to speak and she knew that there were some who would never be able to understand how that could be. They thought that the only way to convey things was through words.

There were few feelings in the world better than the sun on your face, the breeze lightly raking through your hair, and best of all, to have your mate leaning into you, feeding strength and love and support through the simple proximity and contact. Derrick’s smile was warm and grateful, and he kissed the top of Kaleigh’s head, his arm still draped with a peaceful possessiveness around her shoulders.
Resting his chin lightly on top of her head, he let his eyes close, wishing the morning would just go on forever, far beyond its boundaries, so they didn’t have to move; so that their appetites would not grow, and so they wouldn’t have to leave the little sanctuary they had created so effortlessly for themselves.

Kaleigh again found herself hoping that no one came up on the roof anytime soon. If someone else joined them, it would be the end of their private little getaway for the time being. She knew perfectly well that the roof was public territory for the rest of the pack, but if someone else was to come up, it would be the end of this pleasantness. And she was nowhere near ready for it to end. She never would be. If it could go on like this for eternity, then she would be more than happy. Kaleigh had all that her heart and soul needed sitting next to her and so long as that was the case, happiness was hers.

Derrick, realistically, believed it was only a matter of time before someone else came up to the roof. All he wanted was enough time for he and Kaleigh to have their peace and quiet and privacy before someone else did come up to the roof, and he believed that wasn’t too much to ask for. But it wasn’t as if he was going to hang a sign on the other side of the roof’s entrance door, or tell anyone who might happen to come up to leave again. They didn’t own the roof; he had no delusions about that. Pack wolves shared territory, and this was as much a place for any of the others to find sanctuary as it was for them.
Stroking his fingers softly through her hair as it hung over her shoulder, he breathed in and let out a peaceful sigh, smiling at the scent of her shampoo and stifling a chuckle to himself. He did, however, kiss the top of her head, in an unnecessary action of reassurance.

While Kaleigh knew that hanging a sign or telling someone else to leave them alone wouldn’t be happening, the former would have been rather entertaining if done right. Perhaps a bit of glitter and some bright colors. As well as the threat of a glitter shower if they interrupted. While the thought was amusing, it was far from practical- or polite. She knew that they weren’t the only ones who enjoyed the serenity the rooftop offered and she would never really try to prevent someone from coming up. While she would have done it anyway, the possibility that someone would join them at any moment prodded her to make the most out of every second they had out there to themselves.
She gave another soft smile at the kiss and leaned into Derrick a bit more, breathing in his scent, something that could relax her in the most stressful of times or help her to sleep when a night started to turn long.

Derrick found himself watching one of the birds from earlier as it loitered nearby, seeming undecided on its direction. Whether it had been separated from the flock or if it was a completely different bird altogether wasn’t clear, but he still found himself watching it, as if fascinated by the choice it might make about its journey. When it weaved around and then darted off away from the hotel, he smiled, watching it until it was out of sight.
If Kaleigh really did get it in her head to make a sign, the chances were that Derrick would help her, realistically. He was just that type of person; that type of mate. While he figured he was far from unique in that vein, he would help Kaleigh with anything she set her heart on, no matter where it led. Whether it was fixing something in the kitchen, rearranging the furniture in their bedroom, or making a ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign for the roof with glitter and all, he would do his part and offer his help.

Kaleigh knew quite well that Derrick would help her with absolutely anything she asked for his assistance on and that was one of the many things that she was forever grateful for. It never mattered how silly or serious the task, she knew that she could always count on Derrick to offer his assistance, just as she would offer her own assistance to him. He, however, was much better at fixing things, but she was always more than happy to stand to the side and hand him whatever tool he needed during one of her ‘oops, I think I broke something’ times or a ‘who broke it and didn’t tell anyone’ time.
Listening to the muted sounds from the street, Kaleigh heard a car horn honk and someone yell. It was most likely someone getting cut off in traffic; she had discovered quickly that there were some terrible drivers in the city. Oh, she knew that there were terrible drivers everywhere, but she remembered hearing somewhere that Los Angeles had possibly some of the worst drivers in the country.

Derrick would help Kaleigh with anything, even if she didn’t ask for him to. It would be offered anyway, and even if she turned it down, he would still hover close by, waiting to come to her assistance should she decide she needed it. Maybe some thought it made him seem like a pest, or bothersome, or overly-protective even, but he didn’t care. The only opinion he truly cared about was Kaleigh’s. A predictable, but nevertheless concrete fact.
When he too heard the car horn, he lifted his head, gazing off in the direction it had drifted from. He was still for a moment, as if expecting danger, the slight tension in his body no doubt perceptible to his mate, even though he did his best to keep it subdued. He remained in that prepared, even wary state until the noise had completely faded, and the hum of traffic was back to normal. Derrick didn’t ease right away, but the tightness in his limbs and torso subtly began to fade, before he settled his chin lightly on the top of Kaleigh’s head again.

Kaleigh never thought that Derrick was pesty or bothersome when he asked if she wanted help and hovered. How could she? He only wanted to make sure that she had help and she rather liked the fact that he was what others likely thought of as overprotective. She was the same with him, though. She always asked if he needed help and if he didn’t, she was always nearby and, even if she was seemingly working on something else, she was almost constantly checking on Derrick to see if he needed her assistance.
Silently, the blonde female cursed the honking horn and shouting person when Derrick tensed. As slight as it was, it was natural that she had noticed. She always did. Shifting slightly, though not taking her head off her mate’s shoulder, she put her arms lightly around his waist. Some might think that Derrick tensing over something so simple as a car horn sounding down on the street was overreacting, but Kaleigh simply accepted it as being how Derrick was. There were reasons for them to both be a little more on edge occasionally and she didn’t care what anyone else might think. Derrick was absolutely perfect in her eyes and she couldn’t think of anything that he was likely to do that would change her mind.

Derrick had always been protective of Kaleigh, but it was something that had intensified and solidified while they had been rogues, as brief as that period of their lives had been when one looked at the big picture. Still, it had been a time that had cemented the behaviour in the male of the pair; he disliked letting Kaleigh out of his sight, and was prone to staying close to her, or at least within sight or smelling distance, so he could be comforted that she was safe and well. He was comforted, as any mate would be, by the knowledge that such a thing went both ways, and he knew that she would always be by his side, through everything, no matter the danger. It was frightening and reassuring at the same time.
As his mate’s arms went around his waist, he lowered his head to set it on hers, closing his eyes. Breathing in her unique, graceful scent, he used that to assure himself that everything was fine, and as it should be. No harm would come to them, or more importantly, to Kaleigh. She was always his top priority and his top concern; she came first, before anything else in his life. And there were no exceptions.

At the beginning of their time as rogues, immediately after she had miraculously managed to get Derrick out of the vampires’ abode- she still wasn’t sure how she had managed to get in and out without one of them coming back and finding her- she had been the protector. Derrick had required a bit of recovery time to regain his strength- both physical and mental- after what had been done to him, so it had come down to Kaleigh to take care of them. It was a task that she had met head on and, even after Derrick had once again become strong enough to be the protector, she had been unable to convince herself that things could go back to the way that they had been. The ordeal had made her that much more protective of her mate and it was something that had stayed with her and not just because she knew that there was a possibility that the vampire who had caused the most damage to her mate was still out there.
Kaleigh would always be convinced that this was the safest she would ever be- right next to her mate- but her safety was really the least of her concerns. Derrick’s, however, along with his happiness, was her top priority. That was simply how it was, always had been and always would be. She didn’t care what she had to do, she was determined to make sure that Derrick was always safe and at the very least, content.
