Oh, this is getting weird. Sarah wasn't entirely used to being flirted with by a brother officer, but she was almost positive that's what was going on. She ignored the urge to glance at Chris to gauge his reaction; knowing his dislike for the detective, she doubted he was exactly thrilled. On the other hand, he knew better than to step in. He was protective, possibly overprotective, but not stupid.
"And how would Flynn know that?" she inquired, glancing from one to the other. "Did you two grow up together?" She smiled at Flynn, hoping he didn't feel like they were putting him on the spot; she liked him.

Flynn had given a slightly confused look when Miles had addressed him. How exactly was he supposed to know if the detective had been involved in anything illegal when he was younger? When Sarah had asked the question, he had offered a slight smile to the lovely redhead and at her second question, he shook his head. "I can honestly say that we didn't."

"There were so many people like that when I was growing up that one more wouldn't have made that big a difference." To be truthful, his childhood hadn't really been that bad, but, just like there was everywhere else, there had been a few bullies and the likes. "Still, all things considered, it really is a good thing that we didn't grow up together. No offense, but if you were bad enough that you think you could've made my life a living hell, then you probably would have given a few people heart attacks."

Chris listened to the conversation, concentrating on eating his food and mostly keeping his sarcastic comments to himself between mouthfuls, or gulps of the soda that was so green it probably looked radioactive. When Miles commented on forks taking the fun out of Chinese food, though, he set his aside, and started using his chopsticks instead.
Well, it wasn't quite a challenge, but what the hell? It had sounded like enough of a taunt for him to respond, and he did know how to use them. Truth be told, he'd just gotten in the habit of using a fork after Sarah had started complaining about how she couldn't. It wasn't that he'd taken pity on her exactly, but he'd decided to at least level the playing field.
Now, there was no need for that. Miles had eaten his food so quickly he probably couldn't have inhaled it so fast, and Flynn was... keeping to himself, for the most part, but including himself just enough to not go unnoticed, which was the main thing.
When Miles went quiet though, Chris thought he could've choked on a piece of sweet and sour chicken. He kept his comment to himself though, simply glancing at Sarah as if to see whether he was imagining things, or whether the detective really had shut his mouth for a change.

Sarah glanced at the chopsticks wielded deftly in her partner's hand, and chuckled. "Showoff," she teased good-naturedly -- for the second time that day, she realized. To Flynn and Miles, she explained. "Ty doesn't usually use chopsticks with me since I can't handle the damn things to save my life. I guess you're just all out to make me look bad today."

"I wouldn't say that," Chris told her after swallowing. "We've just mastered the technique and you haven't." He dodged a swat at his arm, and smiled rather boyishly, before returning to his plate of food. He could give as well as he could receive, really, but he knew when to quit; it wasn't time, yet, and really, a joke about not being able to use chopsticks was so far beyond tame that it was laughable to think of it as offensive.
Glancing to Flynn, he offered the younger man a smile, shifting in his seat a little before taking hold of his glass of soda, but not drinking from it immediately... just in case Sarah had a retort. Too many times, she had almost made him choke on his drink...

While Sarah was explaining about the chopsticks and Chris spoke to her, Flynn took the opportunity to eat a bit more. He was far more at ease just listening than he was attempting to be involved in the conversation. Not that it said anything about the company he had. He was comfortable enough with those he was sitting with, but being silent for his part was really what he preferred.

"I don't know about that," Sarah replied. "I've had Chinese food with Tyler here more times than I can count, and I've never picked it up." Granted, Chris usually used a fork when he ate with her anymore, but even when he used chopsticks she couldn't get the hang of it. She picked up her half-eaten beef stick and chewed at it lazily, enjoying the taste.

Miles could flirt all he wanted. As protective, and admittedly somewhat ‘possessive’ of his partner as he was, Chris knew Sarah was what they called ‘a big girl’. Hell, she could flirt back, if she really wanted to… but whether or not Miles warranted such attention was beyond her tall, dark-haired partner. Simply put, he didn’t like the detective, but he could tolerate him, if he needed to. He knew how to resist punching him, anyway. For now, at least.
Setting aside his chopsticks when he had eaten his fill, he turned his glass on the table slowly, watching the remains of the Mountain Dew inside it as it swirled. Again, he decided to keep to himself, if only to avoid another sarcasm battle breaking out. Sarah would only have to cuff them both around the back of the head if they resorted to that… again.
Though knowing the detective, he would probably enjoy it…

Sarah was about to reply to Miles's assertion regarding eating Chinese food with them -- or him -- more often, but was interrupted by her own cell phone ringing. "Oh, excuse me a minute, guys." She flipped open the silver phone, raised an eyebrow at the ID, and answered.
"Hello?....Oh, Henderson, hey....Yeah? Uh-huh....uh-huh....uh-huh....oh. Really." Sarah's lunch companions could see her eyes visibly darken. "Is that right. Well, I guess that's it, then. Thanks for being straight with me....no, no hard feelings, of course not. Right. See you."
She closed the phone and rammed it back into her bag, then glanced up at Chris. "Another one bites the dust," she said tartly.

Chris looked up from his green soda, blinking when Sarah said what she had. “Seriously?” He briefly glanced to Flynn and Miles, realising neither of them would really know what was going on, but he did. Very much so. That familiar defensiveness flared, but he pushed it back down; it was none of his business. He wasn’t sure what else to say, while they sat at the table with the technician and the detective… but he settled for saying, “That sucks, Sarah… I’m sorry.”
Quickly, he added, lower, for her to hear, “Don’t let it bother you.”

She nodded, recognizing his sympathy for what it was, and not minding it because it came from him. "Thanks."
Realizing she was being rude to their companions, Sarah shook her head, and smiled. "Sorry, guys. Just a little bad news -- nothing major. Certainly nothing worth spoiling our meal for, at any rate. So...either of you two have any pets? I'm thinking about getting some fish." She resumed eating her lunch, determined to at least appear less annoyed than she really was.

Fish? She was talking about pet fish. Not the best distraction, but he would take it, if she was so determined. He offered a slight smile, but let it fade, recognising his partner’s need for another topic, and respecting that. He let her drop the subject, but if she wanted to talk about it later, he wouldn’t shrug it off. She was his best friend, and really, the best partner he could have hoped for after passing the sergeant’s test and landing a place in Narcotics.
He was waiting for their detective companion to offer a comment… or ask a question. Would he take the unintentional bait and inquire as to what had happened, or would he read the signs, and let it drop?

The scruffy-haired sergeant couldn’t resist a smirk, crooked though it was, and somewhat short lived. He took his hand off his glass, easing back into his seat beside Sarah as he casually said, “That kind of love is kind of frowned upon in some countries, y’know.”
Okay, so it was very childish, and ridiculous, but anything he could do to make Sarah smile honestly was worth the trouble in his book. Besides, it was another chance to make Miles look or feel silly, even if only for a moment; it was an extremely low blow, but Chris could have the attitude of a rebellious teenager at the best of times. Miles just happened to be the perfect target.

Chris finally got Sarah back for all the times she'd made him snort into his drinks. She was taking a mouthful of Mountain Dew at the time he commented on Miles's "illicit love affair," and only with a supreme effort did she manage not to spray soda on the table.
"Sheppy!" She wiped her mouth, giggling madly. Whatever else anyone could say about Chris, he always knew how to make her feel better. Even if his methods were a little...messy.
