As Peter and Roxanne spoke, Tony excused himself, having noticed the wave. He motioned over to Tasha, indicating to the two that he would be greeting her and with another soft smile at Roxie, Tony began to weave through the people gathered in the bar, nodding to those he recognized as he passed them. It appeared as though pretty much the whole station was there although he knew it was at best only half. The relatively small size of Joes combined with Tony’s natural dislike for crowded spaces as they were too much like enclosed spaces for his own liking meant that his mind was already conjuring up and endless wave of people.
It was a relief therefore to settle down next to his friend, one of his best friends – Tony thanking the world at large every day that he had been lucky enough to earn two best friends when some people went through life without any – and greet her with another of his large warm smiles. “Tasha. Have they descended into who has the better war story to share yet?” He asked, glancing over at the group of cops who were still clustered around the Tequila.

In all honesty Kath had always liked Tasha, she had been more than happy to let the ME into her 'good books', and share many embarrassing stories with her, it was all in good fun at the time, and she was also glad that even after they had split up, Marcus and Tash' had stayed friends. It would have been too awkward for words had they not, for a lot of reasons. Laughing with Esperanza slightly, and countering the 'afraid of tequila' line because she never could refuse a challenge of any kind, the brunette leaned forward and took a full shot glass form the tray.
"Ah, Tony, there's no need," she said as the CSI joined the party, holding up her tequila shot with a serious expression as she sat back in her seat a little, "Everyone knows I have the best war story." With a very slightly uncharacteristic smile, the dark haired detective knocked the shot back and winced as the liquor burned down the throat. As if to draw a line under her point, the drinking of the shot had been to make the point, she slammed the glass rim down on the table with a satisfied sigh.

"You actually got the boy outta the lab?" Pete teased as he handed over their drinks. "Good lord, child, what kind of dirty, underhanded tricks did you have to resort to?"
Roxanne just glared at her partner, which lasted all of five seconds, before she had to laugh. "Shut up, Petey," she returned. "It's not like I dragged him by the ears. Figured he'd like to pal around with his peers."
"We'll see how long that lasts -- ow! Don't kick me!"
Before she could be accused of assaulting an officer, Roxanne skipped off, grinning broadly at Tasha as she approached to take the other seat beside the ME. She handed off Tony's drink with a smile and then turned to greet the other women. "Lancaster been challeneged to a drinking match yet?" she asked, chuckling while the small, Spanish detective partook in a shot of her own. "I hope it's Stabler. He's fun when he gets going."

He smiled a little at Katherine and nodded as she greeted him, eyes flickering over to take in the large collection of tequila shots, knowing what would happen; the same thing that always happened when they got together. It was harmless fun and for the most part he enjoyed watching the whole thing unravel in front of him.
“Of course you do, Kath, of course,” Tony replied in his best ‘soothing’ voice. He was never quite sure where he stood with her – to be fair aside from Tasha and Mike; he was never one hundred percent sure where he really stood with anyone due to the slightly paranoid side of him that was rarely shown to the world at large. Tony was reasonably sure that Katherine liked him and he certainly liked her, suddenly feeling brave enough to not only use her shortened name but to take part in some very gentle and friendly teasing, testing the waters so to speak.
He accepted the drink from Roxanne without words, simply a smile and a nod, watching as she turned to greet the other’s who were all gathered there, feeling rather content even if a social gathering of more than a couple of people was normally far out of his comfort zone.

Tasha would have replied to Tony with a smile, but Katherine rung in with a response that would have been more amusing than her own, prompting the ME to laugh quietly. It was a regular ‘game’ for the cops whenever there was a get-together, and of course, then the CSIs would join in and try to outdo the stranger stories from the officers, turning it into a good old game of ‘who has the weirdest work story?’. Sometimes, routine was entertaining.
She had already decided to avoid taking a tequila shot, deciding instead to stick with her beer, which was much more her style. She preferred beer to everything else even remotely alcoholic, including wine; beer just seemed so much tamer than most other beverages, and she was content to hold true to her habits even when there was ‘hardcore’ liquor on offer. Tasha would simply watch, perhaps even try to guess who would back out first.

Following his sister’s example and leaning forward to take a shot of tequila from the tray, he sat back with it and didn’t move to drink it for at least a minute or so, as if rushing it would have some unfavourable consequence of some sort. As it was, Kath’s swift downing of her shot was met with a roll of his eyes and a crooked smirk, as if her behaviour were predictable in some way.
“Be careful feeding her ego like that, Tony,” Marcus warned, unable to keep himself from smiling, before he downed his own shot of tequila, setting the glass down on the large round table again afterwards, feeling the strength and flavour of the alcohol burn and fade down his throat. Normally, he would have waited a few seconds and then washed the taste away completely with a mouthful of beer; the only problem with that was that he’d already finished the bottle of beer. There might have been a slight flaw in his plan.

They all had pretty weird and dramatic stories, ones that would have seemed impossible to those who didn’t know how dead bodies truly reacted after death or the sheer stupidity of some of the people who committed the crimes. Most of the weird work stories tended to be connected to the gruesome work stories and although Tony knew that even off the clock, in a gathering of cops, CSI’s and medical examiners the conversation would naturally turn back to work, if he could help it he would rather put off having those sorts of talks for as long as possible.
Tony might have loved his job to the point of obsession at times but even he liked to get away from it now and then. “I don’t think she needs my help in that,” Tony replied. He’d yet to meet a cop that didn’t have some kind of healthy ego, it was pretty much a requirement for them to do what they did and he had nothing but respect for them because of that. To mask his nervous smile – part of him instantly having wondered if he had gone too far, not used to too much social interaction with too many people – he lifted the glass to his mouth, taking a sip of the coke.

"Katherine, you're such a cop," Roxanne teased.
It was true. Both of the Riveras had that certain something; that strong, undeniable prescence that made them stand out in a way that just shouted LAPD. They were two of the best officers in their devision, really, able to balance to good-cop/bad-cop routine with their respective partners -- Roxie had seem them in action more than once, having worked with either sibling on one homicide case or other. When it came right down to it, though, Marcus and Katherine were just good people and good company.

They all had their ‘weird’ stories, but they also all had their own ‘horror’ stories, details of truly sickening crimes of all kinds that they never, during their training, wanted to see or experience. It was just a sad fact of life that they had to take the bad with the good, as anyone did, and that included the pains of others, whether they be the lucky few who survived the crimes that Marcus, Katherine and the other Homicide cops made their careers out of, or those the CSIs interviewed on a regular basis in order to gather all the evidence they needed.
Smirking at his sister’s expression, Marcus took one of the fresh beers that had been deposited on the table. “She’s always been cop material,” Marcus explained casually. “Take that however you want.” The comment earned him a few laughs, and any minute now, he was sure it would earn him either a sore head or an equally sore arm, depending on his sister’s aim.

His thoughts unconsciously mirrored Roxanne’s when it came to the Rivera siblings; they were good people, dedicated to the job and the sort that made you proud to know them and proud to be working with the same aim in mind. They were also, along with those like Esperanza – who was another good, decent cop in her own right – the type who slotted in well to these sorts of gatherings and who in many ways carried the conversation. Something Tony was only too aware of and only too grateful for; had it been left to him and others like him, the conversation would have faded out into uncomfortable silence.
Everyone had their talents and Tony’s lay firmly in his work outside of people. Give him a photo of blood spatter and he could tell you far more than you wanted or really needed to know, but give him someone to talk to without a set list of questions to discover answers for and he was a little lost. He was perfectly happy to listen to them talk around him, enjoying the company in a rather passive manner. Listening to Marcus and Katherine bicker in a friendly sibling manner was differently a highlight; sitting this close to Roxie and spending some time with her was another.
