By contrast Theon had been permitted to wear his heart on his sleeve, he had been allowed to show whatever emotions had been burning through him so long as they were not seen as disrespectful at the time. Theon might have been born into a lower station than Svanhildur but there had been certain advantages; there had been little expected of him and he hadn't had to follow any particular path set out before him. His father had arranged for him to serve his lord, Ađalsteinn, but beyond that he had been allowed to be his own man, make his own choices as he would. Theon had not had to put on any sort of mask or armour in order to satisfy his people, and in the end perhaps it would have been wasted effort; given how he had left his village, back when he had still been human, it only would have been a bigger disappointment to those like his mother and his sister if he had had some sort of significant standing. It certainly hadn't meant much in the end. His village and its people had still been wiped out, by the very same creature responsible for the destruction of Svanhildur's.
Theon's dark eyes stayed on the road where they belonged but he was still aware of exactly where Svana's attention was direction in that moment. He knew that she was staring out of the window, just as he knew there was more to what she said than she would -- or could, perhaps -- readily admit. Drawing in a deep breath that he let out slowly through his nose, Theon finally said, "I know." It was stated simply but with significance. Theon understood what she needed from him, he needed it himself as well and slipping now in any way could prove fatal down the line. Eyvindur would not hesitate to attack such a weakness, and so Theon could not afford to show it.
