Continued from: News Floor with Alan, Iris and Shawn
With the list he had scribbled down for Lynnette safely in his pocket, Nick moved into the conference room with the others, finding himself a spot and settling into it. Once the meeting was over, he was intending to call Lynnette and let her know what he had found. It wouldn’t take long- well, it could and he knew it, but since he was at work, he would try to keep the conversation to a reasonable, work time length- and once he had done that, then he’d concentrate on work, whatever he might end up having to do.
He watched as others filed in, taking up places, most obviously wondering what all of this was about. He was just ready to hear what the editor-in-chief had to say about everything.

Iris settled herself into the first empty spot she could find, which meant there were a few people between them. Picking a piece of fuzz off her cuff, she let it fall to the floor as she waited for the meeting to get underway, trying to act as if she had no idea as to what was going on without having to actually say it. She didn’t need everyone seeing just how out of sorts she was right now- she liked to keep up as much of a professional appearance as was possible, no matter what was going on. No, there was nothing wrong with showing emotions, but sometimes it was easier not to.

Alan glanced around the room as he entered, pleased that everyone seemed inside. The quiet muttering died as moved through the small group of reporters and photographers alike, taking in the varying degrees of interest and confusion on his employees face. Confusion was good, confusion meant they would think about things and not take the facts at face value which was the sign of all good reporters.
“Alright kids, listen up,” Alan called out, clapping his hands together to draw any attention he might not have. “We’ve got lots of work today, big story and if I see anyone yacking while I’m talking, there will be more trouble than Superman Vs Luthor.” He glared at one of the newer photographers as he spoke, watching with satisfaction as his mouth snapped closed.

Nick could never help but think about how ironic it was when he was a part of a group being addressed by the editor-in-chief as ‘kids’. Certainly, he looked a good deal younger than Alan and for all intents and purposes, he was as far as everyone else was concerned. Still, he could never help but give a little mental chuckle over it. Being over five hundred and forty and have someone in their fifties address you as a ‘kid’ could do that to a wolf. Even so, he was careful to never give any hints that it made him want to laugh, just sat back with everyone else and acted like it was the most natural thing in the world.
At the Superman reference, it was all Nick could do to keep himself from snorting. That was yet another natural reaction he had to things that he tried to keep hidden. After his slip on the floor, he definitely didn’t need another reason for Alan to figure out some cruel and unusual punishment for him.

Alan quickly went over the events of the pervious night, telling his team shortly and consciously as to all the action. The editor-in-chief made an effort to avoid giving details about the witnesses, not wanting the whole floor to badger Iris about the events. The reporters that he decided to give the job of actually getting eyewitness testimony would be told and from them he was sure it would spread quickly enough. Giving her a few more minutes of peace was no crime and it wasn’t as though it would affect their job.
With the explanation finished he glanced around the room, taking in the differing reactions around the room. “Anyone who has any sources I want you to exploit them for all they are worth. Call in any favours you have, by the time we go to print I want to know more about this situation than Superman himself. Some of you I want on certain tasks, everyone else spread out and get what you can.”

Iris was grateful that she wasn’t mentioned- it would be enough of a headache having to give an account of events to whoever Alan sent to do so and she knew that as soon as someone else knew, everyone would know and then she’d have to find a place to lock herself into just to have five minutes without someone coming up and badgering to tell the story yet again. She had the very distinct feeling that she was going to be needing to get into the aspirin she kept in her desk drawer before the day was over.
Everyone else seemed to be buzzing about the story, ready to get going on it, probably wondering if they could find out something juicier about it before someone else could. With the way her luck was running, someone was going to notice that she wasn’t at all thrilled and wonder. Of course, she was photographer rather than a reporter, so it probably wouldn’t be too suspicious. They couldn’t really get inside the church until the police released the crime scene. Maybe her luck was good enough that everyone would think that that was why she wasn’t as raring to go as everyone else was.

“Alright. Individual tasks, for you lucky few…” Alan trailed off, eyeing the small rabble of reporters and photographers grouped around him, mentally going through their skills and the weakness they all had. Sending Monkton to interview Iris for example would be a bad idea, the two having butted heads in pervious jobs. No, he needed someone who at least got on with the young woman, someone who could be a professional reporter and still remain sensitive to her needs.
“Monkton, take someone with you, go to the church, start knocking on doors. I want to know what everyone saw on that street even if they claim to have seen Superman crash to Earth. You treat everything they say as the gospel truth while with them. Anything seem legit you run with it… Sherwood, get over here, I want you to interview the eyewitnesses, so stay after class. Everyone else you know what to do. Marcus, stay behind a moment.” He clapped his hands together, before making a shooing motion; Alan determined to get the ball rolling.

Had Monkton been given the job of interviewing her, Iris might have very well strangled him and then, as much as she respected the man, she might have been tempted to do the same to Alan for torturing her like that. Compared to Monkton, Sherwood was a saint and he was the one that she had been forced to smack upside the head on more than one occasion for being a smartass.
She moved out of the way as the others started filing past, having no desire to have her toes stepped on or be bumped into. Monkton had a smug look on his face as he make his way past that made Iris hard pressed not to throw a pen at him in an attempt to peg him between the eyes with it, but she managed. Sherwood, however, didn’t seem to have quite that much self control at the moment and as soon as he thought that he was blocked enough for Alan not to see him, he launched a pen at the back of Monkton’s head. By the time it hit and the other reporter looked back to see who had done it, a few people were blocking Sherwood from his view. The only regret Iris had was that she hadn’t been the one to throw the pen because no matter what sort of mood she was in, she was always up for knocking someone down a peg or two if they needed it.
In just a few moments, only she and Sherwood were left, the latter moving over to Alan as instructed while Iris hung back and waited.

If Alan actually saw the pen being thrown towards Monkton he didn’t react at the moment. He’d not reacted when Sherwood had made his comment about Superman and Batman, so the lack was no surprise. It was almost as though he was storing up the slights and mistakes made by his reporter, waiting for a time to suddenly spring them on him. That was all assuming that Alan had such a devious streak in him of course.
He waited as the group exited the room, eyes following Boyd for a moment, curious to see what the newest recruit would do. Alan wasn’t fooling himself, he knew he’d thrown the man deep into water with nothing more than a soggy paddle to push himself out with. His respect for Boyd went up a little as he saw him head purposely towards his desk, not looking confused or lost but simply pulling his phone towards him, turning on his computer and getting to work. Perhaps there was hope for him after all.
“Sherwood. You’ll be interviewing the secret eyewitness. Think you can handle that?”

Nick knew that he could sometimes come off as a little more immature than was necessary, especially when his age was put into consideration, but for the vast majority of the time- ninety-eight percent of it he would say- he was a serious reporter. It was just that sometimes, he couldn’t help himself. Everyone wanted to put the smug guy in his place and while, yes, that could on occasions be him, Monkton was a hundred times worse. He was sure of it. Unlike whatever his boss had planned for him if he had seen the thrown pen because Nick had no idea as to what his boss would come up with to make him pay for that, especially if he combined it with the Batman vs. Superman slip up. That wasn’t likely to be pretty… For now, though, he was focused on his job.
“Yes, sir. If that’s what you want me to do, then I can absolutely handle it.”

Alan regarded Nick for a moment, deep in thought and pleased that his reporter appeared to be in the same vein. That was a good start but he wasn’t done with Nick yet – he hadn’t even begun. “Forget about what I want you to do, is that something you think you can handle if you had to volunteer for it?” Alan asked him, curious as to the answer he would receive. And if he would consider it a right or wrong reply.
It was entirely possible that Nick might need a partner in this assignment no matter what the reply would turn out to be and if that was the case than Alan had the perfect person in mind to pair him up with. Let it never be said that the editor-in-chief didn’t know what was going on with the day to day handling of his people.

“Absolutely, sir.” Because a professional reporter could handle anything thrown their way and, considering that he had Alan had probably been in the business approximately the same amount of time, he thought that he could consider himself a professional. Alan definitely was.
Had he known about the whole partner line of thinking, he would have felt the overwhelming desire to slink off and hide somewhere. Not that he would, of course, but Nick didn’t want to work with someone on a story unless it was a photographer and even then, only if it was absolutely necessary. Nick worked best alone- something he though Alan knew- so any mention of having to have a partner would likely make him feel like he was being punished for something.

Alan knew that Nick could work well alone, but sometimes you had to work with a partner, sometimes you had to share both the load and the glory. Team players were more rounded with their skills and he had to know that one of his better reporters could work with another in case a partner was needed in a future. There were at least half a dozen reasons Alan could think of, off the top of his head as to where he would need more than one reporter working together.
And didn’t the best reporters in the world, Lois and Clark, become even better once they became partners?
It wasn’t a punishment – well, not really, perhaps there had been the desire to get back at the slur against Superman when he had decided on who to partner him with, but that was a completely different matter, that wasn’t anything to do with how he ranked Nick as a reporter. Even Alan had worked with partners during his time as an actual reporter after all. He stared at Nick thoughtfully, giving a low hum as he weighed up the pros and cons of letting the kid loose solo.

Nick would, naturally, work with a partner if that was what the editor-in-chief thought was best, but he wouldn’t like it. He had gotten too used to working on his own. He had, of course, worked with partners in the past (who in this line of work hadn’t at one point or another?) but that was then. Nick could be a team player when it came down to it, but he felt that he did his best work when he was going it solo. Maybe it was true and maybe it wasn’t, but that was what he felt all the same.
He waited patiently for Alan to give him the information that he would need in order to contact the eyewitness, whoever it was. He would have to schedule a time that they could meet with him and make sure that he had all of the questions that he would be asking in some sort of order in his mind. While some outside of circle might not have realized it, anyone who knew how he worked would know that he was meticulous about things when it came to his job. He had to be because as a reporter, being disorganized could get his ass kicked to the curb.

In the end, it was that which sealed it, Alan unknowingly echoing the thought that Nick had gotten too used to working solo. It wasn’t good to get too used to anything, because that ran the danger of the person getting too comfortable in the work. You had to keep on your toes, you had to sometimes hate it in order to give the best you could and if you fell too deep into the rut, it was near impossible to be dragged back out. There was no way Alan was going to let Nick end up like that.
“Work with Boyd on this one, you can use the time to show him the ropes of the paper while having him as an extra pair of eyes and ears.” The tone in which he spoke gave the clear indication that this wasn’t a request or a suggestion but a order and one that had better be followed or there would be… consequences. He lowered his voice as he finally gave the information Nick needed, not wanting Iris to hear.
“Miss. Marcus here is our secret witness. I trust you to do your job and keep it secret. Fake a meeting if you have to, I want her to have as much time as she can.”
