A soft whimper sounded out from Tobin’s mouth as her hand stretched out towards him. If she wasn’t scared of him, then that could only mean she was more powerful than she looked and was in a position of strength. The wolf dipped his head down even further and tried to take a step back from her, whimpering again as he put pressure on his injured back leg.
All Tobin wanted was to rest somewhere and be safe. He paused again and watched her through his narrowed eyes, waiting to see what her next move would be. Even though her words said she wasn’t going to hurt him, he couldn’t believe her – he didn’t have a reason to exist except to be hurt. That was what ‘they’ said, that he was hurt to make him stronger and he wasn’t strong enough yet.

The whimper twisted her heart. This animal- whatever it really was- was obviously more hurt than she had realized. Wanting desperately to see if there was anything she could do to help it, she shuffled forward just slightly- still crouching- and stopped, trying in someway to show that she wasn’t a threat. She also knew that it was best not to make any sudden or overly large movements in a time like this, so she was rather hoping that by shuffling forward little by little, she would eventually get close enough to see just what was wrong.
“You’re okay here. No one is going to hurt you. I just need you to be calm for me.” She had no idea if her intentions were getting through to the creature or not, but she was certainly hoping that her tone revealed the fact that she didn’t want to hurt the animal. If she could just get a good look at it, she thought she might be able to figure out what she needed to do to help it.

Tobin backed up again, reaching the wall – his step forward previously to take a better look at her had given him only a little leeway and now he was trapped again. He offered the woman a half hearted snarl, revealing wicked teeth as she shuffled forward again. Tobin didn’t want her to come any closer, if she came close enough to touch him, she would hurt him and he was so tired of being hurt.
He didn’t have the courage to try and lash out at her, fearful of what she would do to him if he tried to attack her. All he could do was try and warn her off in the hope she would leave him alone. Tobin could feel himself getting weaker and weaker with every movement he took, the wolf growing harder and harder to keep forefront in his mind. He was better at holding the wolf than most, but even he had limits.

Beth froze at the snarl, faced with wickedly sharp teeth that she knew would have no problem in snapping her bones. Okay, so no more moving forward. Not right now, anyway. She would stay where she was, but she couldn’t just leave a hurt animal in her storage room. It needed help and she was hoping that maybe- just maybe- she could coax it forward a little so that she could see its injuries a little easier.
“You’re okay. You’re safe here. No one is going to hurt you. I most certainly won’t. I just need to see how hurt you are so that I know what to do to help you.” She had never felt silly talking to animals, even if they couldn’t understand her words, so all of the talking she was doing now was simply natural. Plus, it helped to keep her calm.
Shifting sideways very slowly she leaned slightly in hopes of being able to take stock of the creature’s injuries. While she didn’t know what good that would actually do- it was very unlikely that it was going to let her get close enough to actually treat any wounds- she would feel better if she knew just how injured the creature was.

In theory, he knew the meaning of the word ‘help’. But he couldn’t understand her using it now, in relation to him and slowly he tilted his head, watching as she leaned slightly, taking in every tiny movement. The woman had stopped moving forward and for that he was grateful because it gave him a chance to try and think, to work out what he was going to do now.
His back left leg lay twisted at an impossible angle, the lower limb clearly broken. Tobin panted softly, tongue lolling out of his mouth as he fought with every inch of strength he had left not to transform. No matter how injured he was now, he would have no chance if he reverted back into his human form. Not to mention he would be punished if he transformed without ‘permission’, his frantic mind temporarily forgetting that there was nobody anymore to give such orders.

Leaning as she was, Beth took in the broken back leg and gave a wince. She didn’t know what she could do about that, but she would try and figure something out. Pushing her braid back behind her shoulder, she let her eyes sweep over the rest of the animal, taking note of the injuries that she could see. If she was going to treat the animal herself, which she knew was an insane idea but it was there all the same, she would have to be careful of those teeth and claws.
“You’ll be okay now. I’ll do what I can for you. See if I can get you cleaned up and at least a little more comfortable if you’ll actually let me near enough to do anything.” For some incredibly weird reason, she just wanted to reach out and pet the creature. Try and offer it some comfort other than just gently spoken words. That, however, was something that she wasn’t going to do. Not yet, anyway. She needed to at least try and make friends with the big beast before doing anything of the sort.

He snorted, hot breath blowing out and ruffling the edges of one of the flowers closest to him. Tobin still didn’t trust her words but he didn’t know what else to do. He was used to orders, to commands that were spoken in a clear and cold tone where he had to obey and at once, or the consequences would be terrible. Her softly spoken words confused and scared Tobin almost more than the scream had done.
Apart from the snort however, Tobin didn’t move, head tilting up and then back down in a sort of nod, giving her permission to come closer. He kept his body as low and submissive looking as possible, still on edge and ready to try and make a run for it if he could. This had to be a trap or a test, he just didn’t know how he was supposed to react or what he was supposed to do. She was a woman and that meant he should defeat her and yet she wasn’t behaving right at all.

Beth blinked at the nod, thinking that she couldn’t have possibly been seeing that right. It was crazy… and yet she found herself moving forward slowly, still crouching with her hand held in front of her, trying her best to not come off as a threat. I don’t think anything could be a threat to an animal this size, she found herself thinking as she stopped just within reach of the creature. Despite the proximity, she didn’t quite dare touch it yet, thinking that perhaps it was best to let the animal really get her scent before doing so.
“I’ll make sure nothing hurts you,” she said softly, feeling bad for the obviously scared creature before her. “At least, I’ll try to make sure of it for as long as I can. You can’t live here, but I guess so long as you don’t cause any damage, it’d be okay if you stay here until you get better.”

Tobin let out a tiny whine, still clearly uncomfortable by her proximity although he was trying his best to do as he was told and remain still. If she wanted to come closer then he would let her come closer, no matter his own personal fear. There was always the hope that if he behaved correctly she wouldn’t hurt him too badly, although he didn’t delude himself into thinking he could pass this test. He could never pass the tests set him because he was stupid. All he could do was try and fail as little as he could.
He listened carefully to her words, trying to detect the hidden meaning that was sure to be in them, but he couldn’t. Unless it was the not living here bit, did that mean he was supposed to go? But she said it was okay for him to stay… maybe he was supposed to show he didn’t need her support? Tobin was confused, hurt and tired. It was all too much for his mind to take in and after a few more moments of considering the riddle he gave up in defeat, bobbing his head up and down again.

“The way you keep nodding, I’d swear that you can understand me,” Beth said softly, giving a little smile. “Everything is just fine. Absolutely nothing in the world for you to worry about now. I just need to take a look at you and see just how hurt you are. Just please don’t bite me or anything, okay?” She didn’t think the creature could actually understand that plea, but she had felt the need to make it anyway.
Shifting closer, she found herself just inches away from the animal and she began to get extremely nervous again. If it wanted to, it could turn its head and just bite into her. “We’re okay,” she said, though she wasn’t entirely sure if it was supposed to comfort the animal or herself. “We can be friends here.” Slowly- gently- she reached out and tenderly stroked the animal’s head. “We’re good…”

His ears flicked upright as she stopped inches away from him. If he focused he could hear her heart beat pounding away under her skin and bone. The organ pumping blood around her body and increasing in its productivity whenever the person exerted themselves or felt fear. Her heart was beating along rapidly now, tap tap tapping along to its own personal drum beat.
Tobin could smell fear and combined with the heart rate it only served to confuse him more. Why was she scared of him? The woman was clearly the one with all the power here but her actions shifted from moment to moment, one second in control and the next with fear. Her hand touched his head and with a yelp he pulled away, wolf form slipping and fading. Tobin tried to hold on frantically but he had nothing left.
With a noise of pain his body began to shift and contort, bones changing position as the painful transformation began.

Beth gave a gasp at this new development and attempted to get back to her feet. Instead she slipped, landing hard in a sitting position as the creature began to shift, the sounds of bones and cartilage changing shapes and position causing her to grimace. It sounded painful, so she could only imagine what it felt like. Or maybe it didn’t hurt at all. She didn’t know, but either way, the sound and sight were enough to make her think of pain.
She hadn’t meant to startle the creature with her touch; she had just wanted to comfort it, to let it know that it was safe and that she wouldn’t cause it any harm. Instead, she had apparently scared it and caused it to shift.
This is nuts. It can’t be happening. This has to be a dream of some sort because it’s the only logical explanation.

Sobbing in pain, he continued the transformation, his body reforming into his human side, fur receding as pale skin replaced the white fur. Without the thick coat of the wolf to hide his wounds from view, each and every cut and bruise stood out clearly in dramatic contrast against his skin. Older injuries could be seen too, a variety of marks in various stages of healing as well as many tiny scars littering his body on places that you wouldn’t see if he was wearing clothes.
His dishevelled brown hair hung in rough locks around his face, obscured it from view. Tobin didn’t seem to care or even realise he was completely naked, his breath coming in short and terrified little gasps as he tried to draw his legs up into a ball, making himself as tiny as possible. A wave of pain wracked through his body as he forced his broken leg to move as best it could.

A human Beth could definitely deal with. Or at least, a werewolf in its human form because she could no longer pretend that she wasn’t looking at just that. A werewolf. A cute one, true, but a werewolf all the same. If this had been the time for a joke, she might have started humming the theme from The Twilight Zone, but as it was, that would have been in extremely bad taste.
Shifting around carefully, she kept her eyes on his face, moving slowly and attempting to try and ignore the fact that he was naked. The injuries were most important right now. Slowly, Beth stood, keeping her eyes on his face. “I’ve got a blanket around here somewhere and a first aid kit in the front. Why don’t I get them? I can clean up your cuts and I might have something around here to use as a splint for your leg. I’m sorry, but I can’t really do anything else for it.”

If he had been confused before, it was nothing to how Tobin felt now. This had to be a trap or a test of some sort, it just had to be. Because no human would behave like this normally. Even if she wasn’t in league with them, she had to have some other agenda. The few humans who had seen him change before had either fled or tried to use the new found knowledge to their advantage.
Bright blue eyes fixed themselves on the female in the room, Tobin watching every move she made. If it looked like she was going to run then he was going to have to chase her down, no matter what. It was how he had been trained after all. Chase down and kill prey. He didn’t want to have to do that and although he knew he was failing just by thinking that, by thinking he would rather do something other than things he had been trained for, he just couldn’t help it.
