From her words, it appeared that she was… offering him something? Clothes by the sound of it, and while Tobin had worn clothes in the past – they hadn’t been that cruel and anyway, sometimes they had to travel in human guise instead of the more commonly preferred wolf form. But he had been forced to earn that, just as he had been made to earn any privilege in his life.
To be given something was entering whole new territory, and for a fleeting moment Tobin wished he was still back out in the alley. At least the world had made some kind of sense out there – even if the sense had been mostly pain. Slowly, he gave tiny nod to her offer, not sure what else to do.

Beth offered him another smile and nodded. “Okay, then. Clothes coming right up.” She turned and scanned the storage room for a moment, trying to remember where she had put that box, before heading for the corner. Beth had shoved it there in order to keep it out of the way. Suddenly, she was glad that she hadn’t thrown them away like she had originally planned to do because, while she most certainly wasn’t about to argue with what she had seen (he was cute), she knew that he was going to need clothes eventually.
Pushing some things aside, she pulled open a box and grinned when she saw that she had found what she was looking for. Picking up the box, she took it over to him and set it down within his reach. “Here we go. You’re welcome to all of it if you want it. I definitely don’t have anything else I’m using it for.”

The wolf stared at the box for nearly a minute, eyeing it carefully as though expecting it to suddenly leap up and attack him or vanish from sight if he actually reached for it – more than half expecting it to be some kind of cruel trick. The box remained solid and still however, unmoving and unremarkable looking.
He reached out slowly, fingers curling around one of the flaps of the box and carefully pulled it towards him, box sliding along the ground. Tobin took his time in pulling back the flaps to reveal the neatly folded clothes within, as if it was the most precious thing of all times. He brushed his fingers across the first item, hardly touching them before looking up at the woman. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome,” Beth responded with a smile. “I’m just glad that I kept them.” She really had no idea as to why she had kept the clothes. It wasn’t like she was holding onto them for memories; she had long since put that particular boyfriend in the past (and quite happily, too). Perhaps she had known that they would some day come in handy and that was why she had never been bothered enough to throw out or donate the clothes. Whatever it was, Beth was glad that she had left the box in the store room.
“The food should be here in just a few minutes. If you want to get dressed, I’ll go finish putting out all of the flowers so that’s done. When you’re finished, you can come keep me company in the shop itself if you want to and if not, you’re welcome to just hang out back here and help yourself to whatever you find in the refrigerator.” She had learned quickly that a little refrigerator in the store room was a huge help, especially when she remembered to keep it stocked with sodas, water and juice, which it currently was. It allowed her more time at the shop.

She really was being very kind to him, far too kind and Tobin was still at a loss as to why. Kindness was not something he could ever really remember experiencing and he wasn’t sure what had changed in himself between now and last night that could warrant him deserving such behaviour. He nodded at her words, not really understanding her words but in a way trusting her anyway.
Tobin glanced at his arm as he reached for the first top lying on the pile, frown settling on his face at the sight of all the cuts and bruises littering it. It was only a small proportion of the injuries marring his whole body and the frown was directed at a particular set near his wrist in twin cuts where he could remember his wolf, almost insane from the moon dragging his canines along the skin, having nothing else to attack.

When he nodded, Beth turned and gathered up an armful of flowers that needed to be set out before moving into the shop to put them in their places while he got dressed. She honestly knew that she was pushing her luck. She didn’t know the guy- werewolf- and he could very well turn on her at any moment as far as she knew. Beth didn’t think he would, but honestly, a person could never tell. And she was all alone in the shop with him…
I can’t think that way! Nothing is going to happen. Oh, God, I hope nothing is going to happen because if something does… She didn’t want to think about the fact that, while the people next door would probably hear her if she was to scream, they wouldn’t be able to get to the shop fast enough to help her if something bad happened.

He dressed in the first shirt and pants he came across, the loose fitting dark grey shirt making him appear even more forlorn, in clothes that didn’t fit him. Awkwardly he shuffled from the back of the shop to the front, his injured leg already healing, arms wrapped around his chest in a defensive position.
Tobin kept his head bowed as he entered the shop, keeping his eyes fixed on the ground and not the at all the wonderful flowers dotted around. He wanted to look, to take in the multitude of colours and to think about all the different scents – soft hands brushing his hair out of his eyes – and the strange memories they provoked in him but he wasn’t allowed, coming to a stop near the door, clearly unsure of what to do next.

Beth moved expertly around the shop, placing fresh flowers in their places, removing wilted ones and rearranging things as she went. Since the shop wasn’t a large one, she could handle everything well on her own. Not only that, but she was used to doing everything herself, having created a system without actually realizing that she had done so.
When she looked up from arranging some tulips, she caught sight of Tobin and her first thought was, It’s got to be a crime for a guy to be that cute. I bet that if we can find some clothes that fit him properly, it’ll be even better. Though, I’ve got to admit, skin… Forcing that thought out of her mind before she started blushing like an idiot, she gave a smile and said, “You’re more than welcome to look around if you want to. Flowers can’t be really appreciated until you go up to them.” Everything in her was saying that she should attempt to keep him off his broken leg, but she didn’t know a thing about how they- werewolves- healed, so she was going to assume that he knew what he was doing.

Licking his lips, Tobin risked glancing up for a moment, bright blue eye catching the human’s. He looked away at once, eyes firmly on the floor again. His whole body screamed a mixture of defensive and submissive and although it would have been hard for Beth to believe, he was honestly more afraid of her than she was of him.
He shifted nervously, not wanting to look up again and silently berating himself for doing it in the first place. She had said he could look around though and after a moment he began to shuffle towards one of the displays, tread slow and uncertain. He stopped in front of the flowers, the same lilies he had played himself next to when he had first entered the shop, back in his wolf form.

Beth watched him, noting how he moved, his stance, gathering as much information as she could about him that way and finding that she was not discovering anything that she hadn’t already realized. He was uncertain and Beth wished that there was something that she could do or say in order to help him relax a little. Yes, there was still the chance that he was going to turn around and smash her over the head with a vase or something, but she was beginning to very highly doubt that that was anywhere in her future, much to her relief. Maybe once the food gets here, he’ll be able to relax a little.
Giving a little smile, she moved over, attempting to keep herself at as comfortable a distance as she could for him while putting some more lilies into the display he was looking at. “Lilies. Beautiful aren’t they? Some people don’t like them for whatever reason, but I’ve never been able to see why.” She took one of the white flowers from her armful and smelled it, the soft smile still on her face as she held it out to Tobin. “Lilies and orchids are tied for my favorite.”

After a second of looking at the offered flower he took it gingerly, rolling the stem in his fingers and feeling the cool green of the plant. Tobin sniffed it softly, the scent once again invoking memories he didn’t know he had, memories he couldn’t seem to place in what he knew of the world. They were nice memories all the same, even if they did make his throat constrict in a strange, almost painful manner. “Lilies…” Tobin muttered softly, repeating the name and committing it to his memory. “It looks… pretty?” He examined the petals, giving a surprised little snort when he placed his nose into the centre of the flower and came out with pale yellow pollen on his noise, a surprised expression on his face as though he had never sniffed a flower that deeply before.

How am I supposed to keep my compsure when he keeps getting cuter? Beth wondered, biting the inside of her lower lip in an attempt to keep herself from giving a soft laugh over the pollen on his nose. It shouldn't be possible for him to keep getting more adorable. Maybe it's a werewolf thing... She doubted that, but it was an idle sort of thought. Dear Lord, I'm already smitten...
"They're very pretty," she agreed. She was happy to see that he was enjoying the flower as he was, but she couldn't let him go around with yellow on his nose all day. It wouldn't be nice. "Um, you've got a little pollen on your nose." And it's adorable!

If she had laughed, it was likely Tobin would have taken it the wrong way, if he had understood what the laughter had meant at all. His life hadn’t exactly been filled with laughter, or at least laughter of the good kind. He looked confused at her words before gingerly lifting a hand and swiping at the pollen on his nose, rather like an animal batting at something.
The front of the shop felt exposed and he couldn’t help but glance towards the glass windows every few moments, as though he expected some kind of attack. Tobin didn’t like the wide open space, although it offered him a good escape route if he needed to take it.

Beth gave a soft smile as she watched him and glanced over towards the windows when she saw him do so again. There were a few people moving along out on the sidewalk, making their way towards the various shops that lined the street or perhaps one of the diners. There was nothing that particularly caught her attention. At least, until she saw someone leave the diner across the street with two rather large bags of food and start towards the shop.
“Oh, that’ll be breakfast.” She finished putting the flowers that she had in her arms in their proper places and turned towards the door just as the young woman entered, bringing with her the delightful smells of food. Beth realized then just how ravenous she really was and decided that the rest of the flowers could wait until she had managed to have a very least a bite of food.

The smell coming from the new woman conjured up all sorts of things to Tobin, thoughts and ideas he couldn’t remember having. It also brought up a sudden and strong flash of fear – this was wrong, it was all wrong, he wasn’t supposed to be here and he wasn’t supposed to be subtly sniffing at the air, drawing in the scents.
He just wanted to run and find somewhere dark and quiet to hide in until the world made sense again but that would mean leaving Bethany and it would mean leaving the food. Tobin was weak, he knew that and his inability to leave despite knowing it was the right thing to do just proved to him once again how weak he really was. The young wolf kept a careful eye on the woman holding the food as she moved towards Bethany, unconsciously ready to act should she need protecting.
