Nick closed the door once he was certain that she was in and carried the bag around the front of the car, going slowly in order to attempt calming himself down. He really did hate it when he started to ramble because it never failed to make him feel like a moron. Had it not been for the sharp smell of gasoline, which was already burning his nose, he would have taken a deep breath in order to help himself on the way to calming down. Instead, he shifted through his keys, finding the appropriate one as he walked.
Once he was behind the wheel again and his door was shut, he looked to Lynnette. “Would this stuff be in your way if I was to put it down by your feet? I think that’s probably going to be the safest place for it, but if you don’t want it there, I can probably make it fit between the seats.” He certainly didn’t want to crowd Lynnette with it, but he certainly couldn’t put it by his feet.

Unwittingly, she allowed her eyes to follow Nick outside as he circled the car to reach the driver’s side. She didn’t realise she was observing him like that until he pulled the handle, and she snapped her gaze forward again, inwardly chiding herself. What was she, spying on him now? The idea was embarrassing enough as it was, but it almost made her flush again, and now that Nick was getting back in the car, she couldn’t allow that.
“Oh, no, it’s fine.” She reached to take it, accidentally brushing her fingers against his as she took the bag. Her smile faltered for a moment, but not in a bad way she knew, and she cleared her throat softly, slipping the bag between her feet, shuffling it back a little so she wouldn’t step on anything unintentionally while they travelled.
Stop making a fuss. Touching of fingers is no big deal… jeez, what are you, a schoolgirl?

Nick gave a smile of his own which, for him, was actually a little shy, though for anyone else it would have been a smile of confidence. He was trying very, very hard not to think about her fingers brushing his, but his mind kept going to it and he thought he was being ridiculous. It was an accident, you nutjob. Calm down. Even as he thought that, he found himself wishing that it had been something more than just an accident.
Knowing that it was best that he not allow himself to start down that road, he shifted and started up the car, putting on his seatbelt. It was just that he felt so comfortable around her. Like he didn’t have to be anyone but who he was, which was an extremely nice change to the way things usually were. Oh, he was always himself, but it was rare that he felt like that was actually okay.
He gave her another grin as he pulled out of the spot and headed for the road again. “I think I’m feeling lucky. We’re going to find the perfect place.” He gave a confident nod at his words and joined the flow of traffic.
