As the Pomeranian stretched up, paws scrabbling frantically at the bed, Poppy couldn’t help but give a weak little chuckle at the sight. It seemed Casper knew something was wrong – it explained why he had been so quiet and well behaved in Iris’s arms when normally he would have wiggled free and run round her apartment like crazy, trying to hunt down the mystery animal of the week – and she reached down, grasping the little dog around his stomach and pulling him up onto the bed. Casper gave a joyful little yip as his feet made contact with the soft of the bed and he bounded next to Poppy, shuffling around in circles a few times before settling down.
“No, I’m okay… I think I have everything I could possibly need here. If I don’t, it’ll force me to move outside. I guess I should think about going out anyway.” She shrugged, hand absently starching behind Casper’s right ear as she spoke. “Me and Casp will look out for each other.”

Iris gave a little nod and managed a very wane smile as she watched Casper. He and Poppy would keep each other company and, while the little white ball of fluff didn't seem very ferocious, Iris knew that he would do anything he could to protect Poppy. "I'll get in touch later and see how everything is going. I'll see you tonight."
Pulling her robe tightly around her, she turned and started back for her own apartment. Luckily, her car was waiting for her in the parking garage, it having been towed to the complex like promised the night before. She didn't want to drive off to work, but she would make herself go because there were things that needed to be done.

Casper rolled onto his back, legs kicking up in the air as if he was on the ground walking. It was one of his tricks, and one that Poppy always loved, rewarding the ball of fluff with a vigorous rub on his tummy. Which was probably one of the reasons why he did it so often in front of the younger Marcus sibling.
Poppy sniffled and laughed softly, reaching out and rewarding the dog, his little white tail thumping madly on the bed as if he was beating a drum. She shifted slightly, bringing her legs up under her, the long pyjama bottoms covering her feet. Poppy always insisted on wearing night clothes that were slightly too long for her, wanting to cut down on any chance of her seeing her burns.

Moving back to her sister’s bedroom, she gave a little smile when she saw Casper. That little dog loved Poppy and it surprised Iris that he didn’t spend more time in the younger Marcus sibling’s place when the door between the apartments was left open. True, he spent a great amount of time there, but he always went back to Iris for some cuddling before bedtime and he thought that he absolutely had to sleep curled up on Iris’s second pillow.
“I’m about to head off to work. You’re sure you’re going to be okay on your own? I can still call in.”

“No, you should go. I mean when they find out about last night, they’ll going to be worried. You should let them know you’re okay and find out what you can about… stuff.” Poppy shrugged slightly, her right shoulder rising higher than her left, a tiny but honest smile on her face as she looked up from Casper to her sister.
“I’ll be fine. I wasn’t the one attacked… are you sure you’re okay?” she asked, a guilty look crossing her features. Poppy had been so caught up in her own terror and misery that she had completely neglected to make sure Iris – who had actually been hurt by the woman – was okay.

“I’m fine,” Iris assured, noticing the guilty look on Poppy’s face and feeling that there was no cause for it. Iris was rather sore- she seemed to have landed harder on the pew than she had thought- but she could deal with that. Past that, it was down to emotional trauma, which was going to take a while to handle, but she wasn’t going to admit that to Poppy. There was absolutely no sense in making her worry about such things. “Don’t worry about it.”
She gave a little sigh as checked her watch, which she wore on her left wrist while her almost ever present pearl bracelet was around her right. “I guess I really ought to be going. The two of you be good and if you need anything, just call okay?”

“I will, I promise,” Poppy assured her, a serious look on her face. Iris need have no worries on that front – if anything went even slightly wrong, Poppy was going to be standing next to the phone and dialling the numbers so fast Casper’s little doggy head would spin. She ran a hand though her long hair, pulling a face at the tangles and knots in it. It was going to take a while to tidy and neaten up, that was for sure.
She couldn’t help but worry a little about Iris and her slight injuries anyway. That was what part of being a sister was about, younger or older. To worry when something went wrong for the other and nowadays, unlike the past, Poppy took her sibling ‘duties’ very seriously indeed. “Good luck at work today.”

"Thanks." Honestly, Iris had the feeling that she was going to need all the luck she could get to make it through the day without yelling at someone. She was exhausted and in a rather bad mood, so anyone who rubbed her the wrong way was likely to end up getting a taste of her temper. Iris would attempt to keep from exploding at someone, but there was really no way to know if she would be able to manage that until she actually got to work.
"Be careful if you go out today." She usually said this, but today, she was more worried about it than normal. After the previous night, she was on edge even if it didn't actually show. "I'll be home right after work." She wouldn't even stop to pick up something for dinner; ordering in was just find with her.

The little dog on Poppy’s bed seemed to sense that Iris was going to leave in the next few minutes. Her outfit was probably a good giveaway, but if Poppy didn’t know better she would swear that Casper understood the conversation going on around him and had taken the last words to mean the start of a farewell.
He twisted back onto his front, scrambling to his feet and rushing over to the edge of the bed, tail still wagging furiously as he gave a series of quiet yips, ones that Poppy sometimes claimed were his way of saying ‘Goodbye and be careful’.
“I will. I might go down to the shop in a bit… some fresh air will probably do me some good.”

Iris gave a nod and moved over to give Casper a good scratch behind the ears, giving a little sigh. She was dragging her feet where actually going to work was concerned and she knew that she shouldn’t. The sooner she actually left, the easier going was likely to be. As soon as she got in her car and was on her way, going to work would be easier, but right now, dragging herself away seemed to be taking up everything she had. Finally, though, she stopped petting Casper and stepped back towards the door.
“Okay, I guess I’m heading out now…” She reached into her pocket and pulled out her keys. “I’ll see the two of you later.” Iris raised her hand in farewell and moved out of the bedroom and went through to the front door. Maybe work wouldn’t be too bad. She could hope anyway.

Poppy flopped backwards after Iris had left, knees bent and legs completely under her so that her feet were touching the base of her back. One of the advantages of her years of ballet training was an extraordinary flexibility that enabled her to do things like touching her back with her foot without even thinking about it. If she wanted to, she could kick herself in the head – it went without saying that she really didn’t want to do such a thing.
She sighed lightly as Casper came snuffling back over to her, investigating why she was suddenly flat on her back. Poppy patted the little dog lightly for a few moments as she thought, trying to decide how to spend her day. Would it be weird if she showed up at the hospital asking about Detectives?
The young girl wasn’t sure what the proper etiquette was on visiting injured cops who had saved your older sister’s life. After another few moments of indecision she sat up and slowly slid off the bed. At the very least she should have a shower. And then she could work out what to do.

The hot shower had done much for Poppy, the warm water soaking into her bones and muscles. Relaxing her slightly and making her feel that much better. She had spent longer under the hot spray than she would normally, face turned up to the shower head, her eyes closed and just letting the water rain down on her and wash away all her fear and dirt.
Poppy dressed quickly, the dark blue dress standing out in direct contrast to her still too pale skin. She was still slightly in shock, in a mental sense. The events of last night didn’t seem real to her anymore, even as she started to dry her hair in preparation for going out, her matching blue velvet boots already on. Poppy wanted to make sure the two detectives were okay and if that meant she had to leave her apartment then so be it. Hiding would just make leaving later harder.
It would be rude however to come without something, she decided as she shrugged into the denim jacket, patting her pockets to make sure she had her purse safe inside. Poppy waved bye to Casper who gave a mournful whine as she grabbed her keys and exited her apartment.
