Nancy wasn’t always stubborn. For instance, she wasn’t stubborn when she was asleep and that most certainly counted in her book. She had to admit, though, she could dig her heels in quite firmly when it came right down to it and giving up wasn’t something that she did easily. She hated to give in and let something get the best of her, but she could usually figure out when it was a hopeless cause, even if it was because James made her see the reality of the situation. If he told her that being stubborn wasn’t likely to get her anywhere with something in particular, she would rethink things, but not until then.
James was the one she trusted most in the world and, when she thought about it, thought that it was quite possible that she trusted him more than she ever had anyone. She had always been wary about telling even her parents certain things, but she had no such issues with James. She knew that she could trust him with absolutely anything and hoped that he realized that; he knew everything there was to know about her, something that no one else did. The way they were standing there, together and facing the world before them, was much like it had been ever since he had turned her and, honestly, there was absolutely no one that she would rather face the world with. James was her family and there was no one better to face the world with.
At his words, Nancy gave him her best innocent look. “You mean, you aren’t already old?” If he could tease her, then she could tease him! It was only fair.

That was the time he loved her best, when Nancy was asleep. She looked almost like a little angel when she was peacefully sleeping and thus not driving him mad. If only she would sleep more often… no he was joking, she’d just get in the way if she slept too much, not to mention become annoying with all that snoring. Probably for the best she remained awake, even if that did mean she was one of the most stubborn people he had ever met. It kept her strong; even in the face of pain and for that at least, he was grateful.
They were a unit, a team of two against the world and even though there were days when it all felt so hard, knowing that he had Nancy by his side was usually enough to keep him going. And on the days when mere knowledge wasn’t quite enough for James, his best friend was there to tell him so as well, and vice versa. It was just the way the two of them worked, ignoring all the odd looks they had received over the years or the disbelief that they could be friends and nothing more. Then again, James tended to claim that nothing more put what they had down.
He wasn’t buying the innocent look, not by a long shot. “If I’m old missy, its because you have aged me beyond my years.”

Nancy was a perfect little angel at all times, whether she was sleeping or awake. James would never admit it, she knew, but it was true! She was really an angel, not a crazy little hellion who enjoyed tormenting James. All right, so maybe she wasn’t actually very angelic, but she wasn’t exactly a hellion, either. She liked to think that she was comfortably near the middle, sliding back and forth a bit as need dictated. It was no fun being totally good, but she didn’t think anyone could give her complete hellion status without being at least partially joking.
They were indeed a team and Nancy thought they were a darn good one at that. There were days when it seemed like it was going to be impossible to get to the next one, but they always managed and they did so together. For her, not only did having James there make things easier, but it made them better too. There was someone to share the successes with as well as the failures, someone she could share her problems with who knew they could share theirs in return. To some, they were ‘just’ friends, but there really was so much more to it than that. There were no romantic feelings between them, but ‘just friends’ didn’t even begin to sum them up.
It was silly to use her innocent look on James, Nancy knew, but she couldn’t help herself sometimes, especially in instances like this. He had long since learned to see right through it, but it was such an ideal look on occasions. Now though, she pouted. “Why are you so mean? And don’t use the excuse that I’m mean as an answer. I’m not mean!” But she was silly.

Now James was all for the theory that views were simply personal perception and even the idea that simply observing an item would change its behaviour, but the idea of Nancy as a perfect little anything, demon or angel, was a laughable one. It was something he might actually have to laugh about later, when they had both calmed down and apparently moved on from this conversation. Nothing like dragging it all back up when Nancy least expected it, bursting suddenly into joyous giggles and startling her. If he felt the ‘argument’ needed to be carried on of course, so basically if he hadn’t already won or if James felt like rubbing it in.
Had he ever truly bought the so called innocent look that Nancy liked to use whenever they were messing about like this? Others might have been taken in by that sweet little innocent girl who hadn’t even ever dreamed of doing anything wrong, ever, but James knew better. He didn’t buy the pout either, he knew the difference between that and the real, sad pout she had. “Me? Mean? I beg to differ, Princess Stubborn, I am not mean. You mistake me simply stating the truth for you thinking I’m being mean.”

Well, at least he didn’t think she was a demon, though she knew that he wasn’t buying her perfect little angel act. Even she knew it was an act, but she was at least more angel than demon. That she was certain of. And if it wasn’t true, then clearly James had something to do with it. She would claim he had corrupted her. It wouldn’t be the first time she had claimed that it was because of him that she was the way she was and it wouldn’t be the last, something that she was sure he was just as aware of as she was. If he turned it around and said that she had corrupted him, she would answer the way she usually did- by claiming that someone had to and it may as well have been her.
He may not have ever bought the innocent look, but she would always claim that he should, because everyone knew that she really was innocent! Saying it didn’t make it true, but it never hurt to try, the same of which could be said about her pout. “Oh, no. You’re definitely mean, Jamie. I know what I’m talking about.” Of course, James was far from mean, but in a situation like the current one, it was far more fun to claim that he was.

If they were going to get serious about it, then of course James thought she was more angel than demon. He had no doubt that the good part of her personality was the stronger element and that Nancy was just a better person in general. When it came to himself however, he wasn’t nearly as confident; was he a good person? It was the kind of deep worry that was better suited to a night of lonely contemplation than a night spent ‘arguing’ with Nancy. When it came to who had corrupted who, James couldn’t help but think it was a chicken and the egg situation; they had both done it first although clearly Nancy was the worst offender of the two.
Momentarily thrown by the use of the name ‘Jamie’ – a frequent ploy by Nancy that never failed to distract him and make him feel like the kid he had never really been, even if he enjoyed the nickname – it took him a moment or two to come up with a response, mock hurt in his voice as he spoke. “I know of no Jamie. Are you that far gone Nancy that you can’t even remember my name? For shame little midget, for shame.” Yes, calling her that had probably destroyed any chance he had of claiming he wasn’t the mean one but there were times when he just couldn’t help himself.

If James had ever voiced his doubts about whether or not he was a good person, Nancy very well might have looked at him like he was completely out of his mind before stating that of course he was. As much as she might pick on him (though he gave as good as he got) there were no doubts in her mind that James was one of the best people anyone could know. She would always say that he had corrupted her- he really had!- but that didn’t change the fact that James was a good person that everyone would be better off knowing. After all, he put up with her and she knew that was no easy task.
As angelic as she really, really was, she could have a devious side. She knew that calling him ‘Jamie’ had the tendency to distract James. Unfortunately, he usually recovered fairly quickly and got her back. Like now. As soon as he called her ‘little midget’ Nancy’s jaw dropped and she put on the best hurt look that she possibly could. She couldn’t be sure if it was as hurt as she was trying to make it look, but she hoped it came out fairly well. “I’m not a little midget. How could you be so mean to call me that? At least Jamie is a shortened form of James. How do you get ‘little midget’ out of Nancy?”
