His laugh was wonderful. It wasn't fully his laugh, but it was good to hear, no matter what. That it was coming at all was testament to his strength... and a sign that he'd pull through this nightmare. She knew he would, deep in her heart, she knew it, but the confirmation was so comforting she nearly burst into tears again. That was just not an option.
She leaned back in her chair and crossed her arms, and looked at him with a sly smile. "You barely remember ruining the couch, I bet." She gave a mock shrug and said "It's extra for emotional trauma. I needed extra to sooth the soul. And leather will go a long way to doing so."

It would be a long, long road to recovery, Owen understood that much, but he also understood that this was the best place for him, that he was in good hands. Marion had come through for him, and he owed her. The least he could do was pay for the ottoman she had her eye on, he supposed. If it hadn't been for her intervention, there was no telling what might have happened. Someone else might have found him, yes, but if he had been taken to a hospital and treated as a human, things could have gone from bad to worse. Owen didn't fully understand how that worked, if any modern medical practises were harmful to werewolves, but he knew he had ended up in the right place, that being taken in by other wolves and treated by an experienced physician had turned his life in the right direction. Owen wouldn't have chosen this path for himself, but he knew to be thankful for what he had been handed after the attack. Not everyone was so lucky, he was willing to bet.
"Oh, I remember," he said quietly, but with a soft, brief smile to show her that he was not only sorry for destroying that couch but that he wasn't about to spiral down into a fit of despair at the mere mention of the incident. "Leather?" His brows crept up. "You've really thought about this, haven't you?" Yes, sure enough, when he looked down at the page again, there it was, the description of the items she had set her sights on, and the word leather in clear print. "At least leather is easier to clean." He lifted his gaze and angled it in her direction with a faint touch of amusement.

"Are you implying that I will need to clean it again?" She met his gaze and quirked the side of her mouth into a smirk. "Either you're saying I'm sloppy, or you're implying that I keep bad company." She spread her hands, palms to the sky, and gave an exaggerated shrug. "Surely, sir, you don't think so badly of me." Her phone chirped with an alert, and she dug through her belongings until she found the small device. She looked at the screen and sighed. "I really need another assistant. I'm having to answer my own phone and make my own excuses not to attend functions of clients. I'm no good at telling people I don't want to eat their bad food and listen to asinine people talk about why their particular person, client, company, dog, hamster or jukebox is the best and brightest way for humanity."
She threw the device to the surface of her desk again and sighed. "One can only say "I'm busy" so many times before they start guessing otherwise. At least if I had an assistant, it would lend credibility. I can stretch the truth til it screams, but sometimes even I have trouble." She looked at Zodiac where the pup lay and called to her - "Fancy a job, Zo? I'm a good boss, I promise!"

The quip about cleaning had Owen smiling as well, shaking his head in an unnecessary but impulsive denial. "I hope you won't need to clean it like that again," he said, though he knew full well that the couch they were talking about replacing had been far beyond cleaning or they wouldn't have been having this conversation in the first place. "But if Zo and I visit and she gets up on the furniture," he said, lifting his hands a little in a sort of vague gesture as if to say what can you do. It wasn't what he'd meant but he was trying to keep from dragging the conversation down if possible. It was important to stay positive, he knew that, and it was through conversations like this that he could remember how to do that.
Owen had an assistant -- or at least he had, when his personal leave was over he had to figure out just where he stood in terms of his job and what the future held for him -- but he'd never really come to rely on one. It was different for Marion he supposed, law and advertising were two wildly contrasting worlds. "Do you have anyone lined up?" he asked. "For interviews, at least?" It wasn't all that long ago that Marion's last assistant -- paralegal, technically -- had left her employ, probably too early for her to have anyone else in mind, but she was a smart woman, Owen had always seen her as the type to think at least two steps ahead.
