Derrick had been called a natural in his time as a fighter before essentially retiring from the pursuit but he was thoroughly unprepared for the attacks of the other male, the sheer power he wielded so effortlessly. The punches were enough to daze him badly, each slam seeming to rattle his brain around in his skull in a nauseating fashion and the grip on his wrist was vice-like and unrelenting. When the other male threw him as though he weighed nothing all Derrick could do was try to twist his weight and compensate.
Landing on the ground in what could only be described as a heap, his skull pounding and his senses still reeling from the heavy blows, Derrick forced himself back to his feet. Kaleigh was in the front of his mind and he spared a moment to assure himself that she was all right, the enemy wolf hadn't gone after her in the window of opportunity presented to him. Instead the intruder was coming towards him, everything about his posture menacing and intimidating to such a degree that for a moment Derrick almost hesitated. The moment passed and he moved to meet his enemy, lifting a leg and lashing it out and forward in a kick to his opponent's stomach.

Kincaid didn't even blink. He snatched the ankle of the male out of the air before it could connect and cast it aside without care so that he could reach down and snatch him up by his shirt front only to plough his boot into the younger male's gut and slam him back against the wall.
Words were never necessary for Kincaid, he could communicate all he needed to in a single look and at the moment the look he wore was one of tightly bound contempt. His lips peeled back in a silent snarl, his expression twisting for just a moment as he followed through with a swift and hard slam to the side of Derrick's face with his forearm, already spattered with blood. He caught the male before he could topple though, holding the back of his head only to bring it down forcefully to meet his knee as it came up swiftly.

Derrick realised all too late that he had made a grave mistake in not moving further away from the wall before trying to attack the other -- much larger -- male. The kick doubled him over unable to breathe with pain firing through his stomach and sweeping up through his tightening chest. Before he could even try to force out a cough he was struck again and then again. For just a second or two Derrick's consciousness failed him but he came scrambling back with a wild sort of desperation. Kaleigh would be in danger if he didn't continue to fight, if he didn't claw his way back to the surface.
Blood was streaming from his nose and beginning to flow from his mouth, it hurt to breathe and his vision wavered dangerously for several moments. Derrick fought through it and growled in his throat, a rolling sound of challenge. By some stroke of luck -- or perhaps it was better described as a miracle -- he had dropped the knife down by his foot and after buckling so close to the ground he was able to retrieve it, throwing himself forcefully into the other male.
It was like trying to topple a grizzly bear, the other male was so much larger and heavier and Derrick's aches and pains flared anew on contact but he was close enough to swing the blade around at his enemy's ribs, aiming to bury it up to the hilt before he could be stopped.

Being so much older compensated for his being so much larger; Kincaid moved faster than any man of his size had a right to and when Derrick swung the blade towards his ribs the speed of the would-be strike had no chance against his reaction times. Kincaid caught the hand with the blade, twisted it and felt it pop as the bones dislocated and the knife fell free. Perhaps spending so much time on one male was foolish, but they were here to create chaos and with members in need of immediate medical assistance this pack would be scrabbling to pull itself together for days and weeks instead of just hours should everyone end up merely deceased.
To add to the pain Kincaid maintained the grip on the male's limp wrist and used it to pull him up where he then drove his other fist directly and precisely into the younger male's ribs, all but shattering them on the left side of the male's body in one strike.

She was on her feet now, staying out of the way- staying out of Derrick’s way- as much as she could, knowing that the last thing her mate needed was a distraction. It was getting harder and harder to stay put, to stay back where Derrick wouldn’t have to worry about her being in immediate danger from the large, strange male, and it was all she could do not to throw herself into the fray. The wolf was fighting towards the surface, wanting nothing more than to get in there and tear at the stranger in their home, give him something to focus on other than Derrick. The only thing keeping Kaleigh from giving into those urges was the fear that it would come back on Derrick. He had taught her how to defend herself, but she knew that she wouldn’t stand a chance if she tried to insert herself into the fight.
A low growl managed to slip out unbidden and she shifted in her spot slightly before she caught herself. She couldn’t stand watching what was happening, but she wasn’t going to leave Derrick there, not only facing Kincaid, but the fire that was eating away at their home. If nothing else, she could at least keep tabs on it. It was better than paying attention to the sick feeling in the pit of her stomach that came with the thought of the injuries Derrick was receiving and how helpless she was to do anything about it.

The sharp cry of pain tore free the instant bones and cartilage were forcefully displaced and Derrick had no chance when it came to keeping hold of the blade, his fingers trembling madly and a searing arc shooting up his arm to heat his chest and make breathing difficult. Before he could even try to wrench or kick his way free he had been pulled up and struck with another brutal blow. All the air left Derrick's lungs in a rush and he almost choked on the violence of it, the agony quick to replace the shock with the taste of blood washing over his tongue as he struggled to suck in oxygen and almost coughed instead. The world was swimming sickeningly and nausea crashed through his stomach like stormy waves, his ribs aflame and consciousness threatening to fail him once again.
With the release of his wrist his legs folded underneath him and despite the instinct to fight and stay on his feet Derrick collapsed messily to the floor. Pain crashed through him and he was sweating from the heat and the exertion, his hair was beginning to cling to his temples and his brow and all he could smell and taste was blood and smoke. His vision was swimming and his right hand shook uncontrollably, the simple effort of breathing was an agonising struggle and the slightest shift made him want to cry out against the blaze through his ribs. They were broken, several of them if not all of them, his left side was burning with suffocating intensity and there were tears in his eyes. By all rights he should have been done, the defeat should have been obvious, but all it took was a momentary clearing of the cloud from his gaze and the spark of defiance was back.
Kaleigh stood resolute and tense across the lobby, her focus switching from the fight to the fire. She was standing watch, torn between rushing in and staying where she was; Derrick could read his mate like an open book and he knew it would be killing her to simple stand to the side and not defend him as it would him if the tables were turned. It was for Kaleigh that he was fighting, that he suffered readily, and it was to protect his mate that he fought back the heavy fog of threatening unconsciousness, instead taking advantage of his close proximity to his enemy's legs and swinging around with a strained growl of effort to slam one boot against their attacker's knee. It was agony to wrench his body around enough to attack but it was a sacrifice he was more than willing to make if it kept the focus on him instead of Kaleigh and in turn kept her safe from harm.

Continued from; Hallways with Neal
Bella bolted into the Lobby with her mate hot on her heals as Derrick went down, the agonised cries scraping the inside of her skull like nails down a chalkboard. Through the billows of smoke now choking the room she could see the huge male looming over him and she could see Kaleigh too, the scene stamping itself into her mind like a freeze frame before she shot into action. That big, broad male was about to go in for the kill, Isabella could see it in the stance her took, the dip of his shoulders and the sway of his weight and she snatched a kunai out of her blade holster with terrifying ease and fluidity, her finger in her circular loop at her base, giving it a quick, sharp spin before the threw it full tilt at the male.
Kincaid did notice that there was new blood in the lobby, but he was focused on killing this pup in front of its mate (and then killing her too, most likely, Sheppard would probably like that) and didn't react quickly enough to the thrown blade. It hit his hand, burying to the grip through the flesh and through his middle finger too, where it had been balled up in a fist. Still he made no sound, just huffed smoke in and out of his lungs and turned to flash molten eyes through the smoke at his attacker.
A female. Disgusting.
That would be the last blood of his she spilled. He reached up and pulled the knife from his hand, throwing it to the ground carelessly as he rounded on this petite, black-haired female. A fighter. She was unhitching a machete from her belt and he ran at her like a charging bull; this seemed more of a challenge to him, and taking out the fighters of the pack made strategic sense. It would also, however, be satisfying to wring the life out of this little whelp.

Derrick didn't notice the arrival of others until the huge male looming over him paused and turned his head. Only then did Derrick notice they had company, Isabella and Neal specifically, and he couldn't deny the flood of relief through his battered body. Everything hurt and as the intruding male moved away to charge instead towards the dominant fighters within the pack Derrick let the pain overcome him. It was tight and fierce and it felt like he was on fire just as much as the hotel. The foul and unmistakeable taste of blood sat heavy on his tongue and he coughed harshly, a single outward rush of air that brought on a whole fit that made his chest burn and set agony racing down his left side. Awkwardly he rolled over onto his side and then halfway onto his stomach, trying all the while to keep his broken wrist and shattered ribs away from the ground.
Blood spattered the ground as he coughed harshly and he fought against curling into himself. That would only do more harm than good. Copper streams teased horribly over his tongue and the grimace remained on his face, unwavering and pained. He had to get up off the ground, had to get to Kaleigh and make sure she was all right but lifting himself up off the floor just seemed like the most difficult and unachievable task after the fight. It hadn't been much of a fight and that was something Derrick could say to himself without shame; the other wolf had been much older and much stronger, he had made short work of his opponent. If Neal and Bella hadn't arrived when they had the intruding male would have killed him, of that Derrick had no doubt.

Having to stand there and watch had been killing Kaleigh inside. She knew that getting involved would only lead to more problems and that the distraction she would have caused to Derrick could have made things worse, but having to stay back, having to watch was the large male hurt her mate in such a way was torturous. She would have given anything to have actually been able to help, to have been able to do something. She knew that she would never be able to forgive herself for having been unable to do anything but stand there and watch.
She felt a rush of relieve and gratitude when she saw Neal and Isabella arrive, especially when the female drew the strange male’s attention from Derrick. As soon as the large male turned away from Derrick she was moving, rushing towards her mate, keeping as much as distance between her and the stranger as she could, trying to keep out of Isabella’s way as she made a dash for her mate.
Kaleigh was kneeling next to him almost before she stopped, fighting through the surge of emotions that was rushing through her. Hatred towards the big male who had put Derrick in so much pain, loathing for herself for having been unable to do anything but stand there and watch; she did what she could to let the relief of Neal and Bella’s arrival to take over, giving her the opportunity to get to Derrick. There was nothing she could do for him, she knew, except be there, and really, what good would that do? She should have been able to help, to do something useful. She could feel the sting of tears pricking at her eyes and did what she could to fight them down. Her crying was the last thing they needed right now and it would have been just one more bit of uselessness on her part.

Past the thick press of smoke against his senses and lungs as it crept down his throat with each ragged breath he was aware of Kaleigh's scent and how it was stronger now, betraying her closeness. Pain-filled blue eyes opened and he saw her legs, the bend of her knees where she had dropped down at his side. As ridiculous as it was to feel shame for such a thing Derrick felt it surge through him and he closed his eyes again for a time, trying to steady his breathing; it was like pulling oxygen in through a straw and each drag and release was rife with searing pain. The other male had done a considerable amount of damage, Derrick had learned years ago how to assess his own physical condition, and the way the taste of blood refused to shift from his mouth was troubling. He was hurt. Badly.
But that didn't matter. With an strained growl of effort he pushed down on his good hand to get some leverage so he could rise to his knees, biting down hard on the cry of pain that tried to claw its way free. His body was trembling and his back and chest and face were damp with sweat but he focused on Kaleigh's scent and her proximity to keep himself calm, to keep everything in its proper place. Isabella and Neal would keep the attacking wolf distracted so they could get out of the hotel and Derrick had no intention of wasting the opportunity they had presented to him and his mate.

Kaleigh forced the feelings she had for herself aside and turned her complete attention to her mate. She had to get them outside, away from the fight and the fire, but the only problem with that was the fact that she knew it was going to hurt him to move. She could help him- she would help him- but it bothered her to know that it was going to have to come accompanied with more pain on her mate’s part. Kaleigh was almost afraid to touch him, fear that she would place her hand wrong and cause him more pain than was necessary. Kaleigh knew that accidentally hurting him would just add to the anger she felt for herself, but she had to get him out of there, had to get him somewhere relatively safe, away from the flames, the smoke and the fight.
When Derrick raised up, she took hold of his upper arm, keeping her grip light but firm enough to steady him if he needed the assistance. She didn’t think about what she was doing right then, knowing only that she wanted to help if she could. “Lean on me. We’ll get out of here.” If nothing else, Kaleigh hoped that leaving Derrick to arrange himself, to lean on her as much as he wanted or needed, would be a way to keep any new pain down to a minimum.

There was no doubt that it was going to hurt him even more to move but if they stayed then the fire would spread and claim them and now that the fight had moved on his fear of the flames was returning on top of everything else. His eyes opened and met Kaleigh's and he paused in the grip of a wave of dizziness and nausea before nodding his head shakily. They needed to get out as soon as possible and in order to do that he had to get up, he had to help Kaleigh help him. Just like before Kaleigh was the one picking him up and helping him when he had failed in some way and the shame swept through him again to mix with the pain and the fear. Now wasn't the time, he had to push past it and get up so Kaleigh wouldn't be put at risk. It was bad enough that she had stayed in the smoke and the heat that was reaching uncomfortable levels but Derrick wouldn't make her stay any longer. Even if it hurt to move he would do it and he would do it as quickly as he could so they could get outside and away from danger.
Whichever arm he used he was going to cause himself pain but all he could really do was hide it from Kaleigh and that was what he intended to do; he didn't want her to worry or think that she was hurting him. His left arm went around her shoulder and carefully but quickly he pulled himself up from his knees. He wavered and struggled to get to his feet but with Kaleigh's help he managed, his breathing ragged and wet-sounding, his face pale and streaked with blood and his eyes clouded with pain as they looked across the lobby to the fight that was beginning to pick up pace close to the stairs. Derrick knew he wouldn't be able to stay on his feet for long, his legs were already shaking underneath him and it was only a matter of time before he buckled to the ground.

Though she could help him with this, help him get up and out of the burning building, she was kicking herself over not being able to step in and keep him from getting injured. She would take care of him, help him heal the best she could, all the while wishing that she had done more than stand aside.
As Derrick attempted to get up, Kaleigh rose with him, matching his speed carefully and making sure she did what she could not to press against him, knowing that it was hurting him enough as it was. She put her right hand lightly between his shoulder blades, wanting to stay well away from his ribs, and put the left briefly on the arm around her shoulders. With a quick glance to the fight, she focused on her goal and began moving, trying to go slowly enough for Derrick, in his injured state, to keep up easily but at the same time trying to keep it quick enough so they could get outside before the last of Derrick’s strength left him. She could get him out of the hotel on her own if she had to and she wouldn’t stop to think twice about doing so, but she really hoped that they could make it outside before his legs gave out, just so she could be certain that she wouldn’t worsen his injuries during her attempt to move him. She knew that moving as they were wasn’t doing anything to help, but there was nothing to be done about it. They had to get out.

For his part Derrick was glad that Kaleigh had stayed out of the fight, beyond relieved in fact. The intruding wolf was a tank of a male and it seemed likely that only those like Bella and Neal would be able to keep up with him in combat. Derrick certainly hadn't been able to hold his own and though he hadn't seriously trained in many years he had always taken to it naturally and with ease. Perhaps his time away from the pursuit really had affected him and he was only now coming to realise it. There was no doubt Kaleigh would have been terribly injured, perhaps even fatally so, if she had stepped into the fight and Derrick couldn't bear the thought of that. Just thinking about it made the nausea swell fiercely and he wavered dangerously, his vision swimming sickeningly, forcing him to put more weight on Kaleigh's shoulders than he intended.
Thankfully he found his balance again and what little reserves of strength he had left, drawing in breaths as deeply as was possible in his current condition. As badly injured as he was he refused to pile all the responsibility on Kaleigh's shoulders. That wasn't fair, it was his own fault he was wounded, if nothing else he had to help get out of the hotel before it was too late. The doorway was close enough that it was only a dozen steps, thereabouts, before the tease of fresh air told him they were almost there. Just a few more steps and they would be outside and once they were out and far enough away from the fire and the failing building he could collapse and he wouldn't run the risk of hurting Kaleigh or otherwise putting her in harm's way.

Neal followed Bella in to the Lobby just in time to see Derrick fall and the cries from his pack mate made his anger grow. The sight of the huge male towering over Derrick with Kaleigh not far away was more than enough to make him act. He sensed his mate move as much as he saw it the subtle shift in her stance told him that she had already decided on a course of action. Neal waited to see what she would do not wanting to inadvertently derail her plan. If he hadn't have seen the kunai leave her hand he wouldn't have known it hit its target as the strange male didn't make a single sound even when he pulled the blade from his hand, he just turned his eyes on them.
Without hesitating Neal readied his claymore, spinning it slightly in his hand to familiarise himself with the way it moves in his grip as the male suddenly charged towards them. There was a brief moment where he wanted to put himself between his mate and the threat but he knew that Bella was more than capable of handling herself so he pushed that thought out of his mind and prepared himself to fight at her side. He placed himself far enough away from her that he wouldn't be in her way but close enough that he could easily reach her if needed. His focus briefly shifted to where Derrick and Kaleigh had been on the floor before coming back to their attacker, at least they had gotten out. The longer they kept him occupied the better the chances of others escaping the building unhindered and in his opinion that was am acceptable risk for them to take.
