Chris angled his head down and around as well, his expression rather ‘stoic’ and no doubt unreadable to most people as he discreetly watched the wobbling man. The sooner they could get out of there, the better; losing the suspect had been bad enough, but add on top of that the fact that they’d gotten tangled up with some clumsy drunk, and his mood had been turned on its head.
He just wanted to get that burger, maybe grab a soda, and head home. Hell, maybe even watch a pointlessly-violent movie…

Listening to his partner talk on the phone, he kept his gaze on the crowd, who were just itching to get closer for a good look. The look on his face was probably the only thing keeping them back; he could tell he didn’t exactly look welcoming, without even having to see his face in a mirror. Good. The last thing he needed was to play crowd-control.
With a sigh, he glanced back… and did a double-take. “Oh you have got to be kidding me…” Two people in one night; how had he managed to lose two people?
It’s not as if you were exactly paying attention to the guy, he chided himself, and looked to Sarah. “Cancel the ambulance; he took off.” And quickly, too, for a drunk.

"Dammit! Cancel that -- vic made off on foot," Sarah grumbled into the phone. She apologized to the operator and closed the phone. "Well, that's just fantastic. Could the evening get any better?" she asked crossly. The only bright side was that they were, after all, still off duty. "Come on, let's go get something to eat...I get hungry when I'm ticked."

Punching the wall would break your hand. Ergo, don’t do it.
Giving a rough sigh, Chris turned from staring down the alley where the drunk had seemingly made good his ‘escape’, and faced his partner. The crowd were getting more and more inquisitive, the sounds of irritated words from the two officers haven’t truly captured their attention. Without a word, and only a slight narrowing of his eyes at their attitudes, Chris walked away from the crowd, trusting that Sarah would follow.
Hopefully a burger would calm him down.

Sarah recognized the stiffness of Chris's posture, and understood the reasons for it. She brushed past the crowd, falling into step beside him, holding her tongue until they were a good block or two away from the alley.
"You know, I've got Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in widescreen format," she remarked finally. "If you want, we could go watch the entire planet blow up." Wanting to at least make him smile a little, she added, "I could even be persuaded to bypass that burger in favor of my own spaghetti..."

“Late-night spaghetti and a movie with Alan Rickman playing a manic-depressed robot?” Chris looked down at her as they walked. He was quiet for a minute, and then he managed a chuckle. “If it’ll stop me punching the next moron I see, then I’ll take that offer,” he finally conceded, sidestepping around a small crowd of people who stank of one substance or another. That was the major downside to outings like this one.
He slipped his hands into his pockets as they walked side by side, saying after a minute, “I was a jerk to that guy back there, wasn’t I?” It was rhetorical for the most part, but it was her choice whether she wanted to answer. Chris’ somewhat broad shoulders shrugged under his shirt and jacket, dropping a little heavily, hinting that the tension was fading from his body, if only slowly.

Continued from: Alleys and Streets; Back Alleys.
As soon as she got close enough for her eyes to focus on the line waiting to get into the club, she locked onto the owner of the scent she’d caught in the alley not far away. Her normally-dark eyes glowed for a moment again, and she was reassured by the weight of her concealed weapons as she strode closer. She ignored everyone and everything else, wondering if the vampire realised how obvious he was making himself.
Or maybe it was only obvious to her.
As she got closer, she heard him talking about… a boy? And she saw the picture he was brandishing. What was he doing? Elena’s eyes narrowed with a confused, wary frown, and a hint of a growl rattled in her throat as she approached. She didn’t trust this… but then again, she had never trusted vampires. It was only natural.

If Elena could have read the vampire’s mind, she would have grinned; running most certainly would have made her chase him. The predator in her just wouldn’t have been able to say no to the hunt, if he provided one for her.
But now he was coming right towards her. A small growl rattled in her throat, and she cursed the queue of humans scrabbling to get into the lively club. Without them, she could have had her fun right away, but keeping up appearances… it meant she had to at least try and be subtle. Damn them all. She allowed the growl to drag out as he got closer, and she knew he would hear it. Even over the rush of voices from the mortals, he would hear her.
The question, of course, was what he would do next…

Oh, he was talking to her? He was braver than he looked… or just stupider, she couldn’t decide. Her brow quirked all the same, intrigued by the gusto. Her wolfen instincts still automatically recognised the male vampire as a threat, but his words made her hesitate. Intriguing… definitely different, anyway. Usually, they were just all attitudes and gloating without reason.
Not this one.
“That all depends,” she responded, her tone thick with accusation and wary disbelief. Her body was tense, even though it didn’t look it. “What are you doing?”

Elena almost burst out laughing, but managed to restrain herself. “Hmm, if you were thinking I wouldn’t believe you, when you asked about it before?” She smiled, but there was no softness there whatsoever. “You were right. Because I don’t. I’d have to be an idiot to believe that.” She kept her gaze locked on him, wishing he would take off the stupid shades, so she could see his eyes, and use them to judge his behaviour.
“Just how stupid do you think I am, anyway, to even try such a ridiculous story?” He had to be pretty desperate… either that, or he was telling the truth, but Elena refused to even entertain such a notion.

She waited for his reply, almost disappointed at the blandness of it. Where was the fire? Dammit, she wanted an argument! An argument would lead to a fight, and that was what she wanted. And if there was one thing Elena was accustomed to getting, it was her way. She didn’t like being disappointed.
“And what? They pay you in their own blood, do they?” Her sarcasm was far from discreet, and her eyes flickered yellow in the dim light outside the club, her head tilting slightly to the side, enough to make her bangs swing with the motion.

And now he was trying to amuse her? The hint of accent almost intrigued her once again, before she caught herself and pushed the curiosity down where it belonged. It was just plain wrong to be intrigued about a vampire, or anything connected to them. They were filthy, lesser beings, and it was taking a significant amount of self-control to keep herself from just punching him in the face for the simple satisfaction of it.
The true gem of the ‘conversation’ was what he said about the human neck. She had to stifle another laugh, her eyes narrowing as she observed him sceptically. “A vampire being disgusted by the neck of a human? Yeah, right…” She would believe that when she saw it first-hand, and she was in no particular rush to do that.

Now that she could see his eyes, Elena could trust even more to her instincts. “Maybe because they’re not walking corpses… like some ‘things’ that I can name.” Her eyes flickered golden again, and she lifted a brow as she stared at him distastefully, with a dark kind of amusement that wasn’t entirely sincere.
“And maybe because some people prefer to interact with things with a pulse, and a heartbeat, and some body temperature…” She took in a breath, almost wrinkling her nose at the smell, much stronger now that she was closer to the vampire. She had always been able to pick up their stink from a mile away, and tonight had been no exception.

Now he’d done it. How dare he?
She turned on him fully, meeting his gaze with unveiled disgust. “I don’t kill people. I kill horrific wastes of space like you. You’re a sack of useless organs and cold, dead blood that can’t even keep the body alive. Killing people… that’s your race’s specialty.” Her tone darkened, and she growled. “If you can even be called a race…” ‘Disease’ had always seemed like a better word to her. In her mind, they were like the zombies from those cheesy horrors she’d avoided in the eighties.
One more ‘step’ out of line, and she wouldn’t hesitate in decking him right then and there.

Finally, he was showing anger. That was what she wanted…
“So, what? You’re like some clean-freak, and that makes you better than all the others of your kind?” Elena practically snorted, looking him in the eyes unwaveringly. She wasn’t afraid of him, and she doubted she would ever have a reason to be afraid of him. Vampires… they were all cowards. “It just makes you even more bizarre,” she added, slipping a somewhat cruel little smile onto her face.
