Chris’ smile was boyish, and triumphant. He’d made his partner laugh… and with a remark about Miles. His eyes only deviated from the detective long enough to meet Sarah’s for a moment, and then he looked right back at the target of his ‘joke’, saying as he did so, and with a shrug, “Just saying Saturday nights might get a little boring, if your date can’t engage in conversation, that’s all.”
He knew he should stop, before the detective used a steel toe-cap on him under the table… but it was worth the risk. But he would cut it out before it could go too far… well, he usually did, anyway.

Inclining his head slightly in the subtlest of nods, Chris chuckled. “Well, your secret’s safe with me,” he commented lazily, arms crossed over his chest in a casual manner. At least Miles knew how to take a joke, which was some sort of saving grace, the sergeant supposed. He’d still earned himself a glare, but at least the disdain had been stifled there. Even if only begrudgingly, they had learned how to get along, if only for the sake of their work… or the moments in between, such as this.
Stemming any continuation there, he glanced to Flynn, offering the quiet technician another smile, as if to remind him he was still included, and hadn’t been shunned from the conversation for simply being an observer. Chris liked the younger man, and appreciated his help whenever it was needed; he was one of the more likeable technicians, as it was… the others had the tendency to get high-and-mighty with him while they fixed his computer, nagging about what he had done wrong… and he hated that.

Sarah was breathing normally, now, and she chuckled appreciatively at how well Miles took the joke. She was certain that Chris hadn't meant any harm by it -- no real harm, at least -- and as long as they refrained from getting vindictive, all was well.
"We should probably head back soon," she said, finishing her chicken and closing up the bag of beef sticks. "Before they come looking for us or something."

"Well, if they don't kill you, maybe we can all do this again sometime," Sarah said evenly. She knew that would probably annoy Chris, but it wasn't like she meant every day. "We'll convince Flynn to do some talking yet." She flashed the technician one of her dazzling smiles, and he returned it with a smaller, shyer smile of his own.

The less time he had to spend around the detective, the better, but he wasn’t selfish, or that childish… mostly. He’d put up with Miles again, since it wouldn’t literally kill him. It might give him a headache, certainly, but he would survive another ‘event’ like this, he was fairly certain. He also knew that Sarah could figure out how much they didn’t get along as well; even more so than anyone else in the station could read from the two men’s body language, and from the way they spoke to one another.
Rising from his chair, and stepping away from the table, he decided to abandon the Dew still left in the bottom of his glass; the ice had melted, leaving a pale green, watery substance that he knew wouldn’t taste very nice. He reached into his pocket, fetching his car keys from the depths, and pulling them out, swinging them once around his finger whilst he waited for everyone to show they were ready.

The feeling was mutual. So long as someone was there to balance the two men out, then Chris could tolerate time spent around the detective. If Sarah liked Miles, for whatever reason, then he wasn’t going to put his foot down and declare they weren’t hanging out with him at any point ever again. That would be ridiculous, and immature… as tempting as it was.
“Apparently we will,” he returned, meeting the gaze, and returning the grin. It was the game they always played; try and push one another’s buttons, and see who really took the bait first. So far, they were level, it seemed… so far…

"All right, then, gentlemen, let's get back to the station." Sarah piled all the garbage onto the tray on which the food had been carried to the table, and dumped it in the receptacle, then picked up her bag. "I trust I don't need to call shotgun," she added, smirking slightly, "but just in case I do -- shotgun."

Flynn finished off the last of his tea and stood, stretching slightly as he got to his feet. He gathered his garbage quickly and suddenly remembered that he would have to get cat food after work. And don't forget to deal with the apparent emergency in Homicide, he reminded himself.
Even though he had been silent through most of the meal, it really had been nice to get away from the station for a bit and not have lunch alone for once. Shaking hair away from his face, he gave a soft sigh as his pager went off again. Checking it, he found that it was Homicide again. Must be something seriously wrong with a computer for them to page me twice about it.

So far, it seemed the only one to have not been contacted via phone or pager was Chris… and when he dug in his pocket experimentally to see if he’d just missed the tone or vibration, he saw why he hadn’t been interrupted… it was off.
Oops. I should probably remedy that… but later. He’d turn it on when they got back to the station. The beeping of any messages he received would be nicely drowned out by the regular sounds of telephones and conversation up in the offices, and he could ignore it just as much as he would at any other given time… but with a genuine excuse.
Heading out into the parking lot alongside Miles, he broke off to one side, unlocking the car and slipping behind the wheel. He would wait until everyone had buckled themselves in before even moving the car, if only to spare himself more of Sarah’s ridicule… as ‘affectionate’ as it was.

Satisfied that her 'queen bee' position in the passenger seat was not usurped, and probably never would be (at least while they were on duty), Sarah took her place and pulled on her seat belt. "Thanks for lunch," she told her partner again, favoring him with a glance as he started the engine. All things considered, he'd accepted the impromptu gathering with aplomb.

“Anytime.” He paused, key in the ignition. “Well… anytime I bury myself in paperwork and you help me out again, anyway.” He smiled. “So yeah, anytime.” With a shrug, he glanced in the rear-view to see that Miles and Flynn were ready, and he turned on the engine, listening to it come to life before steering them away from Long Wong’s, and on their way back to the station.
The roads had cleared up from the lunchtime rush, and their journey was short, and not overly exciting. Chris glanced in the rear-view to check the street behind them as they drove, and glanced to Sarah every now and again, to see how she was really coping with being dumped over the phone… via the guy’s cousin.
He should probably thank his lucky stars that I never met him. I won’t recognise him in the street that way…

Katherine swung into a parking spot and killed her engine. Long Wong's was the natural choice for food, Chinese was level ground between her and her younger brother, one of few things they didn't argue about. She opened the door, pushing her weight out against it and slamming it behind her. The place was pretty average as far as busy went and it was close enough to the station to make dropping in quick and easy and-
The Detective had entered the building to find herself looking directly at her husband. She blinked and set her jaw. A flurry of swear words and the deep desire to fire a round into the bastards backside raced though her mind but she suppressed them all expertly and went to the counter. Greg had not, it seemed, noticed her, he was too busy talking to the blonde legs he was with; his girlfriend. Kath very much wanted to stay unnoticed.
"Hi," she said when the attention of an employee had been caught, "I'll take a number two, a nine, a four and two sixes to go. Thanks." She tapped her fingers against the counter top as they hurried around to get her order. Her eyes stayed away from her husband resolutely. Ex. He's almost your Ex she thought, though it wasn't all that reassuring. Soon she was going to be a divorced cop living with her fat, younger brother's cat and putting in too many hours per week to toy with the thought of meeting anyone else. The word pathetic came blazing to the front of her mind.
A few highly uncomfortable minutes passed and then a bag with the order was set down on the counter. She paid. She made a bee line for the door. She pretended not to hear Gregory Palmer call her name after her. Katherine marched back to the safety of her Jeep and tore herself out of the parking lot at as high a speed as she could get away with, Chinese food stowed in the foot space of the passenger seat.
She really hated running into Greg.

Mmm. Nothing like the smell of frying rice and chicken. It made Trish's stomach growl something fierce. Fortunately, the place seemed fairly empty, which meant it wouldn't take long to get the munchies back to Sonny's place.
However, there had been a lull in customers. By rights, she was alotted a good, hour-long lunch break, so there was no point in rushing back. It was too nice a day out, after all. Fah, she could afford to slack off. She made sure the cooks knew that they could take as much time as possible before she headed back out the door and into the sun.

"Dude, you could-a told me when I orders the first time around"
Apparently, there was a lack of pork in the back freezer, which meant no pork-fried rice for her or Sonny. Damn. Beatrice was irritated but all she did was sigh to herself. She rifled a ring-bedecked hand back through her streaked-out hair as she altered her original order, opting to sit in the restaurant and wait. At least it wasn't like she was on a super-tight schedule.

It seemed like ages before her order was ready, but Trish was pleasant when she retrieved the large brown bag. She paid and nearly jumped out of her skin when the her back pocket suddenly vibrated; after shifting her stash of food to the other hand, she slid the tiny silver phone from her pocket and flipped it open.
"Feeeed me, Trisha!"
Sonny's jovial voice boomed over the earpiece and made her chuckle on the way out the door. "All right, all right, dude!" Trish returned. "I'm on my way."
