Idly, Kaida caught at a lock of her bright blond hair, twilling and twisting it around her index finger almost coyly as she stared back at Devin, drinking in her fill of her mate and taking her time before replying to his ‘question’. It was almost dangerous, at times like this, the way she played with her toys. Devin was balancing on the edge and part of Kaida knew that one day she could push too far and she would lose him. The thought of loosing Devin made something tighten in her chest and pull, something she didn’t know was there until that fear rose up in her.
She didn’t focus on that feeling, she never did anything more with it except push until it vanished back deep into her, waiting for the next jolt of fear before appearing. Kaida didn’t feel particularly bad about the death; not that she ever felt bad on behalf of the victims of course, but her interest in the male had been rapidly waning to nothing and had Devin waited a little more before acting he would have endured her wrath if only because she had wanted to put the annoying little speck out of its misery herself.
As it was, she didn’t care enough to be upset at the loss of her fun, or annoyed that she had been deprived the end. Kaida had seen his eyes, had witness the horror and the fear and the split second of stark understanding before death came. She wondered sometimes, what they saw, that moment that not even Kaida could watch as the moved to places closed to her. Death however, was not someone the Russian born female wanted to meet in such a personal way, ever.
“Mmmm, that was bold of you lover,” Kaida all but whispered, slinking up to Devin and resting her hand lightly on his lower arm.

For the most part, Devin was able to hold on, forcing himself back a step or two from the edge, though sometimes he was right up against the drop-off, peering over and half wondering if he should just step over rather than waiting to fall. He thought that it might be easier that way, but deep down, he was afraid of what would happen if he did. More than anything, he was afraid that he would lose Kaida if he did. She was really the only reason that he bothered to hang on any more. He knew that it was only a matter of time before he really did go over- especially if things continued on the way they were- but for now, at least, he was hanging on.

Some part of her – deep, deep down, beyond any real conscious thought – wondered if Devin would be more like the man she craved in that dark corner of her mind if he had fell over that tempting edge. If he would be strong and ruthless and make her stop, even if the conscious part of her knew that if Devin tried to do such a thing she wouldn’t be able to take it, wouldn’t be able to stay in such a painful place. The conflicting desires constantly warred with each other, and the closet Kaida got to realising that was by subtly pushing him on at times like this.
She had never stepped up to the edge herself, never having ended up so far but Kaida had seen the lure of true madness from a distance calling to her. Kaida’s hand trailed further up his arm, cool fingers brushing along his shirt. It was foolhardy to remain here with the body cooling next to them. Not that she held any fear from the humans or the excuse they had of a police force, but if werewolves caught wind of the murder and then the scents they were leaving it could cause trouble and danger down the line. “I do so love your moments.”

Devin wanted to be what Kaida wanted him to be, but he didn't know if he could bring him to step over that edge even for her. As tempting as it was sometimes, he knew that there would be no coming back from whatever doing so led him to. He was scared that he might end up trying to hurt Kaida if he did, because as much as he loved her- as willing as he was to die for her if that's what he had to do in order to protect her- he couldn't know what he would do. Oh, he didn't think that he'd actually be able to- there was no doubt in his mind that Kaida would be able to stop him before he could do any real damage, but he couldn't stand the thought of so much as trying.
"They can be entertaining enough." He kissed her forehead and looked down at the body. "I guess we should go while we don't have anyone trying to stop us."

If asked, Kaida would deny that she wanted Devin to lose all holds he had on his sanity. She would believe it too, because the conscious desires of her couldn’t imagine loosing Devin like that and not even she knew every thought that flittered in the dark recesses of her mind.
She smiled at the gentle kiss on her forehead, enjoying the contrast of soft love and the brutal murder of the rapidly cooling body at their feet. It amused her to know that they could swing between the extremes so easily and so rapidly. Kaida looked up at him through lowered eyes, attention fully on her mate and not on the thought of trying to snare another male. Right now, they didn’t seem particularly interesting to her, not when she had Devin to keep her busy. “The night is cool,” she suggested. “Let’s go for a walk.”

CONTINUED FROM: Back Alley with Bo
Bo actually got her to laugh, and even that small bit of mirth made her feel worlds better. Her earlier panic seemed to be dropping away, bit by bit, which was nothing short of a relief; Mimi needed to be able to work again. If she went all to pieces every time she was confronted by a rowdy bunch of drunks, she wouldn't make a very good barmaid, now, would she?
As they made their way out front, Mimi did her best to mop up her face. No doubt the pair of them skulking from the alley would raise a few eyebrows, but if she was still bleeding all over herself? Plain embarrassing, that's what it would have been. Only when she was certain that her appearance wouldn't cause anyone to call the authorities did she let herself sidle up to the blond werewolf. More out of habit than anything else, she locked an arm around his waist and pressed into his side, glad for his warmth.
"This was not how I imagined tonight going..."

It was still remarkable to Bo that Mimi could work in a place like Lunacy given what it was she could do. When she had first revealed her abilities to him he had been nothing short of surprised and disbelieving. Surely someone who heard voices would prefer a quieter line of work. But not Mimi. Instead she had chosen one of the noisiest places the city had to offer. That was impressive, at least to the wolf who walked at her side. It was bad enough some nights with just heightened senses to deal with.
"How did you imagine it going?" he asked her, voice curious while his expression was alert, his blue eyes roaming the surroundings. There weren't too many people milling around at the front of the club but Bo was on guard all the same. In a city like Los Angeles there was no telling where danger might spring from without warning at any given moment. He wasn't about to take any chances, especially not when he had Mimi with him.

The few patrons still lingering around the front of the club didn't bother to glance their way and for that Mimi was glad. She knew they wouldn't be bothered now that they were away from the mad press of the people inside and yet, like Bo, she was still alert and aware of their surroundings. Maybe she could consider herself lucky; tonight would mark the first 'incident' since she had come to Los Angeles and, of course, it could have been much, much worse.
"Well, I'd say things are more or less back on track now," she told Bo with a crooked grin. They found their way to his parked cycle and Mimi settled onto her perch high on the back of the bike, leaving the werewolf room the slide on in front of her. "Getting knocked in the nose, however..."
Really, Mimi was just happy that nothing was broken. She could still feel the side of her face throbbing, the dull pain centered firmly around her nose. With a wince, she pressed careful fingers to her face. "Think I can feel the shiner comin' in already."

If anyone approached Mimi now there was no doubt that Bo would show unmistakeable signs of aggression, perhaps even a touch of possessiveness. He and Mimi had an agreement, they weren't exclusive to one another and despite the fact that they had fun -- a lot of fun -- when they were together they were not technically an item. That didn't stop Bo's wolf from feeling like he had some kind of claim, like Mimi was his in a way. Even after more than a century as a werewolf there were still things he could not deny or fight against.
"Let me see," he said, feeling better about pausing to do so now that they were away from the main body of the club and all the rowdy energy it had contained and tried to unleash on Mimi tonight. Coming up beside her on the bike he reached up and took her face in his hands, looking her over before he smiled gently. "We'll get some ice on it and it shouldn't be too bad. It could have been a lot worse."

Mimi nodded gingerly, careful of jostling her aching nose too much. Her slender fingers lifted find one of Bo's hands before they dropped back to his sides and she smiled at him; it was a grateful expression, but there was no banishing the cheeky spark behind her blue eyes. They certainly weren't dating and Mimi certainly knew that he had no reason to keep coming back -- she was just a human, after all -- but the fact that he did was a comfort.
Being an independent woman was all well and good. Mimi still liked the idea of having a shoulder to lean on from time to time.
"Would've been a lot worse if you hadn't been there tonight," she murmured. " 'Preciate you jumpin' in like that for me, darlin', I really do."

His wolf responded immediately to the physical contact, the intimacy and the warmth of it, and Bo felt his blue eyes brighten in that preternatural way that was -- at least to those in the know -- unmistakeable. "What can I say?" He smirked, his own cheeky mischievous streak rising with a flash to the surface. "Us wolves can be pretty hotheaded when it comes to things like that."
Things like that. It was a very avoidant and yet almost sly way of saying he had been territorial and protective. It could have simply been read as jumping to a friend's aid and that was part of it, yes, but it was more than that. They weren't dating and they weren't exclusive but the wolf side of him didn't care about either of those things. Wolves mated for life and while he just wasn't built for that kind of long-term commitment and that slow and nerve-racking build towards total and devastating heartbreak he was still a wolf to the core and he couldn't deny his impulses. He had jumped to Mimi's defence so fiercely because in a way she was his and those men had had no right to touch her the way they had.

Things like that. It would have been easy to pick that little statement apart. If Mimi had been that kind of girl, she might have, but she held no illusions about what she had with Bo. She was simply happy to have it. He was handsome, smart -- he gave her a run for her money as far as sarcasm went and good God did they ever fit together.
No, she wouldn't over-analyze. She would simply be grateful. With a smirk of her own, the blonde bartender closed the distance between them, leaning forward on her perch to grant Bo a brief kiss. The contact sent a twinge of pain through her nose, but it was worth it. Mimi drew back with a lazy smile.
"C'mon, sugah," she breathed. "Let's get outta here, huh?"

Bo wasn't the sort to over-analyse anything much less how he felt about another person; in that sense he was much more like a wolf at least when he could help it. Wolves didn't over-think anything and they were much happier for it. The last person he had thought too much about had been his sire and when she had vanished without a trace he had felt that loss greatly, cutting deeply into him like a blade. Bo had made a promise himself never to let that happen again. So he didn't think too hard about anything when it came to his relationships with others. The waters might have been murky when it came to Mimi but that was as much as he was going to admit.
"That sounds like a plan to me." He smiled at her in that confident way of his before climbing onto his bike in front of the blonde bartender and starting it up, granting himself a moment to admire the rumbling growl of the engine. It was a sound he loved, something that perhaps should have been offensive to his sensitive ears rather than pleasing but he couldn't help the grin that spread over his face. With that he gunned the engine and got them underway to Mimi's apartment.
