Continued from: Virgin Megastores with Carter.
Cass pulled a face as they turned the corner. She was glad that her mate had found a place to work, glad that he was comfortable with his coworkers and that the others seemed to leave him be, but it would have been a treat to spend the day alone with him. They were homebodies in every sense of the word; even when she did try to get them out of the apartment, they didn't often stay out on the town for long.
"Downright pity, it is," she murmured. The smile on her face let Carter know she wasn't truly upset. "Then why don't you call me when you get your break? I'll take you to lunch."
Her free hand lifted and she all but wrapped herself around Carter's arm. She knew what her behavior looked like, clingy and needed, but Cass didn't give a damn; work had been quiet, mind-numbingly so. The wolf in her was restless, almost irritable, and the best way she knew to calm the creature was walking beside her. Besides, she was fairly certain that Carter didn't mind a bit.

It was hardly the most glamorous of jobs but Carter liked it well enough. The people were harmless and they were good to him, they gave him his space and treated him amicably. Carter knew they thought him a little strange and said as much when they thought he couldn't hear them, but it was innocent enough. It wasn't cruel or mean-spirited, there was no spite or viciousness behind it. Carter liked his job as much as he thought he should, and that was enough for him.
"I can do that," he promised her, granting her a small smile. Cass was right about the way she wrapped herself around his arm; he didn't mind one bit. In fact, it comforted him so much that he practically forget about all the other people milling about on the main streets of Los Angeles. It was always busy here, there were always people wandering to and fro, coming from here and going there, but when he was with Cass he never minded too much. Crowds made him uncomfortable usually but when his mate was by his side then they might as well have been alone. "So what happened today? Any good stories to share?" His smile grew, curious and quietly amused ahead of time. He liked hearing about the sorts of people who came to see Cass and listen to what she had to say.

She shook her head lightly against his shoulder -- Carter couldn't see her smile, but she knew he would hear it in her voice. "Nothing out of the ordinary," she told him. "Plenty of people asking for love, or advice on love, or whether or not they might find love... you'd think in a city this big, it would be easier for people to attach themselves to someone."
True, Cass got a lot of the same questions over and over, but the cards would always give her something different without fail. She wasn't a witch or Wicca -- she didn't believe in that kind of thing -- but tarot wasn't necessarily about magic. It was the symbols on the cards and the meanings behind them that gave her information; Cass simply interpreted what she saw and did her best to make it coherent.
"What about you?" The she-wolf lifted her head just enough so she could see her mate's face. "Were you all right at work today?"

Cass was right. Carter knew her well enough to be able to hear the smile in her voice even when he couldn't see it on her face, and it warmed him, made him feel increasingly at ease in a place that would have, not five years past, made him incredibly uncomfortable and restless, perhaps even unpredictable. "It's not as easy as it seems, obviously," he said, looking down at his mate where she rested against him as they walked. "Some of them probably already have their soul mate in their lives and don't even know it." That was how it had been for Carter, and he supposed for Cass as well, not that he wanted to make assumptions. Carter hadn't seen what was right in front of him and it had taken Cass making a very direct and unmistakeable advance for him to understand.
"We were so busy that I didn't have time to really think about anything else," he told her, and then nodded his head. "So it wasn't too bad." He offered her a quiet smile, the kind that he saved only for her, edged with affection and a deep, intense fondness. "It could have been worse." Things could always be worse, that was what he told himself on a regular basis. They had been through some tough times, and what was a little discomfort at work in comparison?

The she-wolf gave a low hum of agreement. She saw so many people who came asking for guidance; most of the time, she could tell that whatever they were looking for was right in front of them. Humans had so little time in the world, though -- there was so much they all wanted to do an accomplish before they left that it was no big surprise that they had trouble slowing down to see their surroundings.
Cass knew she was lucky, in that aspect. She had all the time in the world, and with Carter at her side, to boot. He loved her, he made her happy and she tried to do the same for him. They'd managed well enough for nearly a century, at least, and things could only look up from here.
"You're right, there," she said softly. The smile on Carter's face -- that smile he only gave to her -- sent fresh color rising to her cheeks. They stood still at last, coming to a halt at the bus stop that would take them out of the city proper. Cass moved to stand in front of her mate and smiled up at him.
"I'm proud of you, babe. You're doing really well."

When Cass stopped so too did Carter, following her with her eyes as she moved to stand in front of him. He could see that pride in her eyes and he felt a warmth flutter low in his stomach, a pressure in his chest that he knew was nothing bad; quite the opposite, in fact. It was how she made him feel time and time again, they were good feelings, and though it had taken Carter time to figure that out, he knew the signs now and what they made. He smiled at her again, blind to the rest of the world around them, seeing only his mate standing before him.
Making Cass happy was what really mattered, Carter had come to figure out. If she was happy with how he was doing then that was the main thing. His nod was almost shy in a way, and he looked down at their hands, their fingers knitted together so comfortably. The fact that he said nothing was no slight against Cass, and she would know that, he trusted; Carter was a man of few words at the best of times, and when he could think of nothing to say, he remained quiet. The squeeze he gave her fingers in his was response enough, he hoped. He was glad that she was happy, and he hoped he would continue to make her proud.

Cass grinned back. She didn't need words to know what Carter was thinking or how he felt. There had been a long stretch of time all those years ago where he'd hardly been able to speak, and so she had learned to pick up cues elsewhere. She didn't see anything strange about it, she wasn't frustrated -- it was just how they worked as a pair.
She wouldn't have it any other way.
Their bus groaned around the corner. She gave Carter's hand a gentle squeeze in return before she stepped closer to press a light kiss to his lips. Cass was still smiling as she and her mate filed onto the bus with the few other passengers, and settled in for the ride home.
