It didn't take Nikolai long to ascertain what exactly was happening that had drawn his attention. Even several streets over he could smell the acrid threads of thick smoke, coiling like snakes away from the fires that had created them. Every self-respecting wolf knew how to recognise something so naturally dangerous as fire, it was instinct, in their very genetic make-up, something they could acknowledge instantly and Nikolai, despite his youth, was no different. Over the years he had been alone he had learned just how to co-exist with his wolf, how to listen to that animal side of him, what it was telling him and when and why. He might only be a young werewolf but he was adaptive and resourceful, he was smart, and depending on the situation that could make him reliable or equally dangerous.
Once he had ascertained what exactly it was that had caught his attention, it was only a matter of discerning location, direction, and Nikolai stood stock still at the corner of one street, letting humans pass him by without even acknowledging their existence so he could close his eyes and pick out one path over all others. Those humans didn't have long to pause and question his actions, it was only a matter of seconds, the trust and confidence in the wolf he had inside of him opening his eyes and turning him in what he simply knew was the right direction. He had suspected the heart of the territory, or at least close to it, but now there was no doubt.
The closer he got, the clearer he could see the dark clouds in the sky above the buildings. Smoke. The old adage about smoke and fire flashed fleetingly through his brain even as he crossed the street at a jog, easily avoiding a car turning the corner towards him in order to head closer to what he now suspected was not just the heart of the territory but the very core, the pack's home. Something was very wrong, and if the scent of another kind of predator in the air was any indication, he was not the only one who had been attracted to the scene of the fire.
