One of his hands settled comfortably in his pocket as he walked down the street, the same street he frequented every day, at the moment anyway since he was currently residing in Los Angeles for the foreseeable future. Nathan Reed usually made sure to change his route every few days, call it paranoia but when you've been a mercenary for almost as long as you can remember paranoia becomes precaution. He had absolutely no doubt in his mind that several people had it out for him and would love to see his head on a pike. LA was different for him though, he had a routine here that hadn't really changed much since he'd been there several years earlier; there was one corner cafe that made the coffee the way he liked it and everyday on his way out he would stop and get the same thing.
He'd already stopped for his coffee that morning, so one hand held the cardboard mug around the dark brown protective sleeve to keep the scalding liquid from searing his fingertips. He'd dressed as he usually did; casually with worn jeans and a dark shirt with a satchel over his right shoulder resting on his left hip. It left him easy access to the GLOCK. 39 that was tucked into the small of his back, concealed by the loose folds of the shirt. Though he didn't always carry a full arsenal the rogue rarely went out completely unarmed, not unless he was asking to be shot.
Dodging a woman walking a dog Nathan turned the corner and continued down the street, his ultimate destination breakfast at a diner somewhere, a decision hadn't been reached in his head as to which one and he'd had a late night of recon last night - the world didn't stop for the full moon, not for him anyway.

Nathan didn't drink his coffee as he walked, it was too hot to begin with and the whole point of buying it was to have it with his meal once he got to whatever dining destination he felt like. He'd know when he saw it, but for now he just held onto it and weaved in and out of the thinning 'crowd' of people. It wasn't really a busy street per se but there were enough people for him to notice that they were walking much more slowly than he and that meant they were frequently in his way.
The rogue werewolf was wholly unaware that he was being observed from a rooftop, perhaps it spoke of complacency, his ease within the city that meant he wasn't constantly looking over his shoulder or glancing at the nearby rooftops. He wasn't expecting company, the job he was on had almost a zero chance of backfiring enough to cause someone to be sent after him, not at its current stage anyway. Hell the subject of his reconnaissance didn't even know what he looked like let alone who he was or where he lived. That was sort of the point.

The shot cracked off, bullet hitting the random human – she assumed it was a human – right between his eyes, the kill zone. Even before his body had hit the ground, her rifle was shifting back to Nathan, travelling down his body (possibly lingering a fraction longer on his groin than was needed) before reaching his feet and squeezing the trigger again. If that didn’t get Nathan’s attention, she would have to go down the physically wounding route.
-
Shit.
The thought was completely flat and automatic as the sound of a high powered gun shot and the thud of t hitting home in the man standing right next to him reached the male's ears. A second shot tossed up dust and is bored into the asphalt by his feet; Nathan's coffee dropped to the ground, ignored as he went for his firearm and green eyes searched the nearby rooftops, body moving instinctively for cover.
There was running and screaming from the human presence in the area, but he ignored them all. They'd clear the area quickly enough and while his own neck was on the line he was hardly concerned with anymore collateral damage. The secondary shot told him that the first had missed him rather than been intended for the tall blonde man who was now lying face down on the sidewalk, unmoving with a crown of crimson spreading from his forehead and the back of his head blown off. So his earlier thoughts about not needing to worry about being picked off on the streets were erroneous all of a sudden. Who the hell was shooting at him?
Gun un-holstered, cover in the form of the corner of the nearest building found Nathan's eyes turned upwards with a little more clarity. He spotted the barrel of a rifle and narrowed his eyes, unable to see the shooter. He squeezed off a round in that direction; a warning shot that clipped the brickwork of the ledge.

Quickly she reloaded, peering down the scope at the corner Nathan was using as shelter. With a smirk she angled the rifle and fired off another two bullets in quick succession, each hitting the stone work a centimetre apart, and each at exactly the same height as his head. Satisfied that she had managed to get his attention, Rune pulled away from the edge of the building, keeping her body low and tight against the roof as she began to dismantle her rife, fingers flying over the weapon with practised ease.
It wouldn’t do for the police to find her after all.
-
The male wolf got the distinct impression he was being played with. Two bullets hit the brick work level with his head; the precision again spoke of that being their intended target and he ducked back behind the wall for a moment. If the sniper had wanted him dead then he quite frankly would be. That annoyed Nathan and he gave a low growl as he took a breath and then swung round the corner again, firing up at the roofline and this time running forwards simultaneously. A few paces and he was well into a range that was too close for the sniper to hit, the bottom of the next building along.
Nathan started to ascend the fire exit, planning on heading the shooter off and having words. He wanted to know who they were, what they wanted or alternately who sent them to off him. His morning routine had been thrown off kilter and his coffee spilt and he was irritated by both events.

Continued from: The Spot
As Mike stepped out the door, he glanced around. It was far from being a paranoid move, though some might have thought it looked that way. The simple fact was that he was taking things in and noting them as he did. It was such a big part of his job that it came out in his day to day life. It wasn’t a bad thing, though. Taking not of your surroundings was a smart thing to do rather than a paranoid one.
Stifling a yawn with his free hand, Mike started toward the cab. Spending the rest of the night at home wouldn’t be too bad, he supposed. Snacks, kittens and cable were definitely better than nothing.

Pulling open the cab’s door, Mike deposited his bag into the backseat, imagining that the driver was glad that he hadn’t done something crazy like trying to convince him to let this stop be off the meter. It wasn’t like Mike was desperate to save the extra couple of dollars that this might have cost him. Sure, it was always nice to save some cash here and there, but he wasn’t particularly worried about it. Spending the extra money to have the driver wait for him was a lot better than having to call for another cab and then have to pay two drivers just to get home. It would have been easier just to drive himself, but he wasn’t going to drive after he had been drinking. Plus, he didn’t really like taking his expensive car, which had been a gift from his entire family- parents, brothers, sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles and cousins- when he had gotten his job, to the clubs. He would, but he was always afraid some idiot would either try stealing it or damage it.
Straightening up once he had set his bag in the seat, Mike looked around again, taking in what he could see. He had once been told by one of his brothers that this made him look paranoid, but he knew that it came from his job. He always made it a point to check out everything at least twice, just in case there was something that might have gotten overlooked the first time. It had worked more than once, so Mike had the tendency to indulge himself this way.
Spotting India, he offered a smile of his own and gave her a quick wave. It never hurt to be friendly, even when all he had to look forward to was a movie with a couple of kittens fighting for room on his lap.

Mike had always been a friendly sort of guy (and not just in the way that had been labeled “manwhore” by more than one person) and would greet pretty much anyone so long as they didn’t make him wish that murder wasn’t illegal. He wasn’t the sort to greet someone just to be nice, though. If he greeted someone, it was because he wanted to rather than feeling any sort of responsibility to do so. Besides, India had seemed decent enough during the moments they had talked. He didn’t want her to disappear off the face of the earth, so that immediately put her in his ‘good’ column, which therefore meant that she would be greeted whenever he saw her. He did that with so many people throughout the city that it seemed like he greeted almost everyone sometimes. At least, when he was in a good mood (which was more often than not.)
He gave a little grin and a shrug at her question. “Not unless you count a night in front of the tv with snacks and two purring kittens exciting,” he replied. “It could always be worse, though. What about you? Have something exciting planned?”

Mike often took a lot of abuse about his dating style, but he wasn’t hurting anyone. He never led women on about what he wanted; he always let them know how things were from the get go and they always knew that they had the option of walking away at any time. He wasn’t a complete dog, after all. He wasn’t as bad as he could be, but there weren’t too many who saw it that way. He didn’t do things the way they thought he should, so that made him a bad guy in their eyes. At least his friends didn’t let their views on his ways influence their opinion of him.
Originally, Mike had been out to adopt a dog, but he hadn’t been able to walk away when he saw the kitten. They had caught his attention and kept it to such a point that in the end, he had taken them home rather than the intended dog. Aristotle and Galileo had gotten spoiled very quickly and he really was glad that he had decided to adopt the two fluffy kittens rather than a dog.
“Some night are just that way, it seems. Is your car close? You’re welcome to share the cab with me if you need to. It’ll even be on me.”

There had been plenty of women who were perfectly happy to spend the night with him and not demand more and there probably always would be. Not all women were commitment fiends, after all, for which Mike was grateful. He didn’t want to commit to anyone that he wasn’t going to potentially spend the rest of his life wit and he hadn’t found anyone that fit that bill yet. Maybe he would someday, but until then, he had every intention of continuing with his ways. He certainly didn’t see any reason to change.
At her apparent embarrassment over not having a car, Mike gave a little shrug. “There nothing wrong with that. With the way traffic can get in the city, walking can probably get you where you need to go faster than driving sometimes can and public transportation means that you don’t have to run the risk of ending up dealing with road rage. Unless the bus driver ticks someone off.”
Mike waited patiently as India thought about whether to take him up on his offer or not. He was, after all, a stranger and for all she knew, he could end up going nuts on her at some point. When India accepted, Mike reached in and pulled out the bad so she would be able to get in without having to fight her way past them. “You’re welcome. I’m always happy to help out when I can. Ladies first.”

Mike was lucky that he managed to pay the insurance on the car he had gotten as a gift while still being able to pay the rest of his bills, not to mention actually have spending money left over after all was said and done. Had he picked out the car himself, he would have been forced to go with something far less expensive and impressive- likely some junky thing that would have been on the verge of breaking down on his every time he tried to take it out onto the highway. Of course, it would have been his luck that something like that would have broken down in the middle of the highway, probably on the way to a crime scene, and he would have had to call ahead and let them know that he and Tony weren’t going to make it because they were stranded in the middle of the highway in his broken down car. Thank goodness that wasn’t the case. He was nearly obsessive about keeping his car in perfect working order- not to mention looking perfect. As much as he knew that it had cost all of those who had pitched in to buy it for him, he thought that he had a perfectly good reason to obsess over such things.
“You’re welcome.” Mike waited until he was sure that she was in and comfortable before getting in himself, putting his bags at his feet so they wouldn’t crowd her. He knew better than to think that women were capable of nothing but looking pretty. Not only did he work with women who proved that they were capable of so much more than just looking pretty (though he did work with some gorgeous women) he would’ve been taught his lesson a long time ago, he was sure. “So, where to?”

Mike didn’t have any problems being the ‘car guy’ and giving a ride to anyone who might need it. Just so help the person who spilled something on the interior… He didn’t know what he would do, but it was probably best for everyone if they never had to find out. He knew that it was just a car to most, but he loved that thing and would be greatly put out if anything at all should happen to it. Maybe he was obsessive about it, but at least he wasn’t obsessive to the point of refusing to let anyone else ride in it because they might get it dirty. He couldn’t stand those people.
Shifting the bags at his feet slightly as the cab pulled into the street to join the flow of traffic, Mike managed to get them leaning against the back of the seat in front of him rather than his legs. Once that had been accomplished, he settled back in his seat. He was glad that he had been able to offer India the assistance of letting her share the cab. While he was sure that she was perfectly capable of taking care of herself- after all, it wasn’t like she hadn’t walked home in Los Angeles at night before alone- he was glad to know that she wouldn’t have to worry about needing to do that tonight.

As far as Mike was really concerned, anyone who thought he was insane about obsessing over something like a car could just be on their way. Usually, when he “casually” mentioned the going price of a car such as his, they tended to understand his obsession pretty quickly. Then they asked how he had managed to pay for it while holding his current job, but he didn’t mind telling the truth about that. There was nothing wrong with the truth about how he had come to own such a car, after all. It was better than if he had gone out and splurged so much on himself, and not for what people thought of as the obvious reason. True, he hadn’t had to spend that money himself, but that wasn’t the big deal of the thing. That was the fact that, having gotten the car as a gift rather than for himself, he took much better care of it than he might have otherwise.
They entered strangers’ lives everyday and it wasn’t something Mike had the tendency to think too much about. They were in an out of other people’s worlds all the time and, especially in his job, it wasn’t always in the best circumstances. Still, he entered their lives and they entered his, if only for a little while. He wasn’t always sure what sort of impression he left, but so long as it was one of being a professional when he was dealing with his job, he could deal with whatever else someone might think.

He never mentioned the price of his car unless someone was getting on his nerves with their teasing him about his ‘obsession’. Considering that he could take the teasing pretty well- and would usually see it as an opportunity to do some teasing of his own- he hadn’t come right out and pointed out the price more than twice. It was that or hit someone, so he thought that that was probably the best course of action. Ninety-nine percent of the time though, he kept the price to himself, not wanting to be one of those people. He knew the car probably gave the air of being a big spender and trying to impress people, but he didn’t drive it for that purpose and he really didn’t try to represent himself as anything or anyone that he really wasn’t. That was why he wore his crazy ties and shirts with the weird patterns. He didn’t put on a show for people. What they saw was what they got.
People, for some reason, were often surprised when they learned what Mike did for a living. They always seemed to considered CSIs ‘geeks’ and he had been told more than once that he didn’t look like one. He kept his inner science geek silenced as much as he could when he was off the job, knowing that most people honestly didn’t care to hear about it. He didn’t care if they knew he was a goofball science nerd or not, though he did try to save their sanity where he could. “There’s nothing wrong with working the job you do.” And there really wasn’t. It could certainly be dangerous, but he had the feeling she could handle it. “I’m a CSI with Central Community.”

Mike knew quite well that everyone had their secrets- he was no exception, after all- but most weren’t anything dangerous. After all, not everyone was a murderer that his work might someday help put behind bars. None of his secrets were earth shattering or really even close to being as far as he knew. Then again, a woman might consider his serial dating to be of the “really, really bad” sort. Of course, he never actually hid that from someone he dated, so it wasn’t actually a secret. He made it clear that there was a very good possibility that he wouldn’t be dating them for long and, while a great many called the whole dating thing off as soon as they found out, they at least seemed to appreciate that he told them before they got serious. He wasn’t a complete jerk, after all.
“Sort of, but not nearly as glamorous,” Mike answered with a little smile. He got that question often enough, so it didn’t bother him any more. “They can’t fit all of the real work into an hour show, but it’s enough to give you a rough idea of what it can be like.” Mike could indeed be a geek sometimes, especially where the job was concerned, but that was something that he simply didn’t notice. He did what he did and gave it his all, knowing that so long as he did that, then he was doing his job right.

POST TIMESKIP.
Every night Nikolai took to the streets to roam and wander and hunt, investigating this or that, whatever he had heard about recently, whether it be the night before or a week previously, all the while searching for the clues that would lead him once and for all to his final goal. In the last few weeks his suspicions had been keeping him to one side of the city more than the other, his gut feeling steering him better than any compass ever could. Nikolai might have been a young wolf, incredibly young compared to many of those residing in Los Angeles, but he knew better than to question his instincts. He had kept to one side of the city more than the other, knowing deep down that there was something to be found here that couldn't be found elsewhere, whether it be just a clue, an indicator of progress, or something more concrete.
Perhaps because it had not been so terribly long ago since he himself had been human, Nikolai found it easy enough to slip in amongst mortals and pass for one of them. He had been raised to be whatever he was needed to be, whether it was a guardian, a confidante or an interrogator, and he could switch from role to role with a quiet, calm kind of effortlessness that might unsettle others but to him it was just natural, it was who he was. All his life he had been resourceful and adaptable, it had been a necessity, and those traits had becomes ones he had needed to rely on more and more after the attack that had changed him from man to wolf.
All the while he walked, avoiding this individual or that couple with a smooth kind of ease, moving with the flawless readiness of a man who had been trained long and hard in years gone by, Nikolai kept his senses open and stretched out to their utmost limits. There was a tease of something in the air, some kind of change, and it was that which had him diverting from his original course to cross the street to take one of the smaller, narrower ones that led towards the heart of the territory in which he currently roamed.
Something was happening. He intended to find out what.
