There was evil in the world, evil that couldn’t be understood or explained away and it was a measure of a person’s own inner goodness that they couldn’t comprehend the reasoning of an evil mind. Only recently, had Tobin been able to discover this while watching the television, or even start to come to terms with what wrong truly was. It wasn’t, as he had been taught, mere disobedience to certain rules because sometimes the rules themselves were the ones the rest of the world considered evil. It was all very perplexing and made even more so by the way some shows on the wonder box didn’t have a clear evil axis and an opposing good one.
Tobin didn’t like those shows very much.
He carefully placed the three chocolate items on the conveyer belt, attention drawn, as it always was, by the way the black belt moved. Such technology – any technology – fascinated Tobin, no matter how many times he saw it and no matter how simple it really was. Humans really were an ingenious little race, constantly trying to make up for their weakness and mortality by coming up with new ways to control the world they lived in. Tobin’s eyes travelled up the belt, watching as each item was scanned across, the reassuring little beep, beep telling him that it had been scanned correctly.

There had always been evil and there always would be. If one ever needed proof that it existed, all they had to do was watch the news or read the paper. It was always right there, in plain sight, showing everyone just how nasty and cruel some people were capable of being. It was on of those things the world would never be rid of, no matter how hard others strove to wipe it out, because for every evil person that was caught and dealt with, there were always more out there, watching and waiting for their time to strike. Beth wished desperately that things were different, but there was no sense in pretending they were. That could get a person killed if they weren’t careful.
Moving the empty cart out of the way, Beth waited patiently for the items to be rung up. They stilled needed to stop at the movie rental store, but since that was on the way home, it would be no problem. They could either stop by on their way home or go back to the apartment and put everything away first. Either way, it would be easy enough to do.

He wondered how Miss. Beth would react to the knowledge that he had – for all intents and purposes when measured in this world at least – been raised by evil, for evil, to do evil. He was evil, and in the past he had done some terrible things. Dark, bloody things that made Tobin want to curl up in a tiny ball, scrunching himself into himself as much as he could whenever he thought of them. It would be so easy to claim that the nightmares he suffered were only about things that had happened to him, pain that had been inflicted on him but the truth was nowhere near as clean cut. Many of the dreams had him as the villain, memories that were far too vivid and villains were supposed to pay for their crimes, Tobin was just waiting to have to pay.
As the items passed over the conveyer belt and the till, they were pushed into the loading part of the checkout. Here at least, Tobin could do something that was semi useful, instead of standing around aimlessly while Miss. Beth navigated all the tricky pitfalls and problems that appeared in every aspect of human life, even something as deceptively simple as buying some food. His leg gave a little twinge as he moved to pick up some items, reminding him that it wasn’t as well healed as he had claimed, bone not fully knitted together even though Tobin could skilfully hide it. Two weeks just wasn’t enough time, even for a werewolf but he hadn’t wanted to be a bother and what she didn’t know, wouldn’t hurt her.

Beth likely wouldn’t have been able to believe Tobin if he had told her such a thing, having not seen any signs that he could do anything like that. There had been that first encounter, of course, but he had been scare and injured. That was different than going out and purposely hurting someone or doing something else evil. She probably wouldn’t be able to believe it unless she saw proof for herself. He seemed to be nothing but sweet to her and hearing that he had done anything evil wouldn’t be enough. Hearing wasn’t believing for Beth, especially with things like that.
Giving a smile as Tobin started picking up items from the cart, she continued to unload their purchases. Had she known that his leg was bothering him, she would have suggested that he stay home and take it easy. She would have been worried about him re-injuring himself had she known that his leg hadn’t healed fully yet, but as it was, what she didn’t know about, she couldn’t worry about.

All he could do then was hope that the situation would never come up where he would reveal that darker, evil side of him. Tobin didn't want Miss. Beth to flinch away from him as so many others had done over his relatively - for a werewolf anyway - short life. He didn't want to see the fear in her eyes or hear the cry of pain as she was hurt. He didn't want to see her life drain away under his own actions until the human was nothing but a pale shell in a darker puddle. No, Tobin didn't want any of that at all, mostly to protect her but if he was being honest with himself, if that tiny voice was allowed to speak, he knew it was also to protect himself. It was selfish, but Tobin didn't want to have to feel that way again, to react to the fear and become the monster in the dark.
His leg gave a raw twinge yet again, as if the pain was seeking to remind him that there was no become in that, it was simply what he was and what he had always been. A monster. Werewolves were monsters, not even Miss. Beth could deny that. Humans feared what was different, twisted and turned it until they became the dark and terrible creatures he had seen on the television. Even his Alpha had known that, had told them that they would never be accepted in this human world, that it was dangerous for the god to walk among the blind sheep.

Unless she ever experienced it for herself, Beth would probably never be able to believe that there was an evil side to Tobin. She hadn’t known him for long, but she had never seen even an inkling of a darker side to him. She couldn’t imagine being afraid of him again, having gotten over the shock of him being a werewolf, so the thought that he would do or bring about something that might hurt her simply wasn’t crossing her mind. Even if it did end up crossing her mind, she likely would have dismissed it as silly. For Beth, imaging Tobin hurting someone was simply edging on impossible to do.
If werewolves were monsters, then so were humans. After all, humans killed one another, some simply because they could, and what was more monstrous than that? Beth certainly couldn’t think of anything. Humans put so much stock into being intelligent, but really, how smart could some of them be if they were so willing to kill fellow humans without trying to come up with a better way of going about things? At least werewolves had their more animalistic side as an excuse for such things. What excuse did humans have other than being murdering bastards? Certainly not all humans were like that, but really, did it matter that much? She wasn’t so sure that it did…
Once all of the purchases had been scanned and sacked, the cashier told Beth the total and she pulled out the appropriate amount. Now it was all a matter of getting a movie and getting home. Or vice versa should they decide to take the groceries home first. They would need to figure that out soon.

The dark was buried under the fear but sometimes, during the night he would wake and worry; worry what might happen if that fear would ever fade away. He was scared for a number of reasons, scared of his past, scared for Miss. Beth and scared about this world that he still couldn’t understand. If he lost that, if he became at ease or confident then the evil that Tobin knew was a constant part of his soul might come up to the surface. Such thoughts often kept him up for most of the night, the young werewolf shifting into his wolf form as the hours ticked past because the wolf was stronger and somehow Tobin was able to better think as a wolf.
It didn’t help him with his problem, how to hide that unpleasant side from the human currently paying for all the shopping or even if he had the right to hide that. Surely she deserved to know what kind of… thing was currently loading the shopping bags as best he could into his arms. But Tobin was a coward, too much of a coward, something else his past would have shown so easily. He didn’t look too much of a coward right now, or even particularly evil as he juggled the shopping, trying to keep as much weight as he could off his still injured leg.

She would have listened had he wanted to talk about it. Beth would have known that she couldn’t help- not really- but she could have at least sat down and listened as he told her about his fears. Maybe she could have even offered suggestions that might have been of some help to him. It was doubtful, but she would have done whatever she could, just as she would have tried to do something to help him sleep had she known that he had such problems with it. While it was unlikely that she could have done anything to help, she certainly couldn’t if she didn’t know about it. She wanted to help him in whatever way she could, but he had to let her first. Even if it didn’t seem like there was anything that could possibly be accomplished, she would have wanted to try.
Gathering as many bags as she could, Beth stepped away from the cashier and looked to Tobin. “Why don’t we head home first and put everything away? It’ll make looking for a movie easier if we aren’t trying to balance everything. Speaking of this stuff, do you want me to get a couple of those? I can.”

In a way, he was almost glad she didn’t know about the worry, because Tobin also knew she would try to help and he didn’t think he could handle another burden on his guilt ridden conscious. Beth was already trying to help him so much and he didn’t deserve any of it. If she tried even after she learnt more of his evil ways, then Tobin didn’t know how he would deal with that. Those hours in the dark also let him spend some time as his wolf, reminding himself of where he had come from and reminding himself that he wasn’t completely weak.
He may be nothing compared to his master and the others who followed him, a mere insect compared to their might, but Tobin could at least protect himself and the female human beside him. It wasn’t a lot, but as the days passed, he was starting to wonder if it might actually be enough. “Okay,” Tobin agreed, nodding a little as she spoke. It was for all the situations like this that made him willing to follow her and do what she suggested; even away from his pack a lot of the Omega training remained, enough to know a stronger person and obey them. Suggestions however were a little different than orders, or so he was learning and risking angering her, he clutched the bags of shopping tighter, not wanting her to have to carry them when that was his job. “No, its fine Miss. Beth, I can manage.”

If she had known about his worry, Beth would have at very least tried to help. It was uncertain if she would have actually been able to, but she would have very gladly done anything and everything she possibly could have. There was no way to really know how she would have taken the revelations of what he had done, but it was likely that she would have found it extremely hard to believe. There were some people that she would have had no problems believing if they had revealed a darkness, but Tobin had never shown her any real signs that he was capable of anything particularly nasty.
Carrying the bags was far from his job, but she saw the way he tightened his hold on the bags and gave a nod. “All right. Thank you.” She would have very gladly helped him, but he seemed so determined to carry the bags that she would let him without any insistence that he let her take some. She was, however, ready to take any should he seem to have any trouble at all carrying them on his own.

He felt as though he was lying to her, hiding such a huge part of his personality, his past, his very self and pretending that there was nothing dark in his soul. Then again, Tobin felt as though he was lying to himself, the strain of trying to be normal – or as normal as he could get, from the constant smiles or semi bewildered expression he got from both Miss. Beth and the random people he encountered through the day, it was clear that most of his actions and responses were not the expected ones. The strain was constant, Tobin feeling as though he was starting to snap at the seams a little, at the fear of what might happen and of how the human next to him would react when all that he tried to keep hidden split out and was starkly visible. The idea of her knowing was almost more frightening than what he might do.
Tobin made sure to keep his eyes lowered from her face after he spoke, not daring to meet her eyes as he waited for her answer. It was a risky move, to basically say ‘no’ to someone stronger and more important than him. The wolf inside whined softly, just as concerned that he might have overstepped a line somewhere and tried to be more than the Omega he was. It didn’t matter how many times they might go through a similar conversation, there was always a large part of the male that was just waiting for the other shoe to fall and for the punishment to begin.
Exhaling softly, he couldn’t help but feel a small rush of relief when Miss. Beth accepted his words and they could move on. He wanted to be useful, to help in any small manner he could and if that meant carrying a lot of shopping bags then he was happy to do. They began to move away from the checkout, Tobin’s stride still a little stiff and awkward due to his leg but mobile enough.

Beth tried to be understanding of the actions and responses Tobin gave to certain things and situations, but she had to admit, she was curious as to why they were what they were. His secrets were his to keep as long as he wanted to do so, but she did hope that he would share a bit more about himself someday. She wanted to know what he had gone through that had made him the way he was, but if she never found out, she would understand. There were simply some things that people didn’t share and he had as much right to keep those things to himself as anyone else did. She could and would live with the curiosity if that was how things had to be.
She was concerned about the pressure Tobin was putting on not only his leg, but on himself, though he seemed so determined to get the bags that she found she couldn’t push the topic. Beth knew that he was just trying to help and she appreciated it, though she did feel guilty about letting him get all of the bags. They had bought quite a lot… Still, if he needed help along the way, she would gladly take some of the bags.
As they left the store, she kept her pace slow enough to walk next to him. It was one of those nights where there was no reason in the world to rush, not even the ice cream where it sat in one of the bags. For her, it was a time to be and let be.
