It may have seemed like a reasonable response to Miss. Beth, but it was hardly an answer to Tobin. He didn’t understand so how a ‘why wouldn’t’ hardly helped matters with him but he knew enough to know that when a question was answered, it was on the person receiving the reply to make sense of it and not question further in an attempt to clarify. Tobin nodded slowly, still doodling the pattern with his finger, unable to help but glance every now and then at all the food on the table.
“No drink thanks.” The smell of the food was driving him mad and he wished Beth would at least start to eat, it was torture sitting here and waiting. Was she testing him? Testing his resolve, his strength? All Tobin had known his whole life was tests and the thought that this might be something new and different simply didn’t occur to him.

Had Beth known how Tobin regarded her answer, she would have tried to find a better way to explain. She wasn’t sure that she would be able to manage it, but she most certainly would have tried. She hated it when she didn’t give a satisfactory answer and if she knew about it, she always tried to fix that and give one. What she didn’t know about she couldn’t fix, though, so she poured her coffee, grabbed the plates and eating utensils she kept there just in case they were needed and returned to the table.
Settling back into her seat, she put her mug down and put a plate and set of utensils in front of each of them. “Are you sure you won’t eat with me?” She really wished he would because she could never get over feeling extremely guilty about eating when whoever she was sitting with wasn’t having anything.

He shifted uncomfortably in his seat, head bowed and eyes downcast as Miss. Beth moved. It took everything he had not to watch her, to follow the young woman with his eyes in order to mentally reassure himself that nothing big and bad was going to jump out of the wood work. But you had to trust your leader, or so he had been told. Often the trust meant being punished when your guard was down but that was how it all worked.
His gaze darted up to meet hers when she actually spoke to him however, the mental war raging in his mind clear from his expression. Tobin wanted to eat, wanted so badly to test some of all the strange and odd smells coming from the table but he just didn’t have the courage to do so. “No… it’s not my place,” Tobin repeated at last, breaking the gaze to look down at the table again.

It was all she could do not to sigh at the reply, but she managed and instead started helping herself to the food. Since she hadn’t been able to convince him to eat with her, she supposed she was just going to have to put a bit of a rush on her breakfast in order to get him to eat. “Well, there’s plenty here and I probably won’t even eat half of anything, so whatever is left over, you’re more than welcome to have. You don’t have to eat all of it if you don’t want to, but if you do, then by all means do.”
She felt guilty as she started to eat, but this was apparently the only way she was going to be able to convince him to actually eat. As she worked her way steadily through her breakfast, she couldn’t help but again wonder just what had happened to make him this way. His behavior was extremely strange to her, but she thought that perhaps it was just a werewolf thing. After all, it wasn’t as if she had ever met one before. Or, if she had, she most certainly didn’t know about it, but perhaps that was the whole point. Maybe they had been hiding how they naturally act in order to make her think that they were just regular people. It was going to weigh on her mind until she knew, but she couldn’t very well ask for details- it was quite possible that she would never know the answer to this particular mystery.

The lack of a sigh was a very good thing, to Tobin at least. He knew enough about sighs to assume they came before violence, before rage. The moment where the other was sad and sorry, but Tobin had angered them, had failed somehow and even though they might not want to, it was time for the young werewolf to be punished for his actions.
Tobin only really knew the few werewolves that had made up his ‘pack’, if it could be called that. Yes, he had vague memories of the time before, mostly snatches of sound or smell, sometimes with a faint image but when it came to understanding how wolves worked and acted, he only had a very small set of beliefs to work on. Perhaps they really all were like his pack, certainly until now he had no reason to think the world operated any differently than he had been told. But if that was the case then someone like Miss. Beth shouldn’t exist at all because she was the very opposite of everything he had been told. It was a dilemma and one that he focused on to ignore the tantalising scents of the food that otherwise threatened to drive him mad.

The day Beth raised her hands against someone and it wasn’t in self-defense was the day she would know that she had lost her mind. She was not the type that was prone to violence, even when angered to such a point that she wished she was.
Beth ate quickly, but not so quickly as to be uncivilized about it. She did, after all, have a store to run, which she couldn’t do if she was sitting in the back eating breakfast, but more importantly, she knew that Tobin was hungry and wanted to be finished as soon as she could be in order to make sure that he would eat. As soon as she finished her breakfast, she drained the last of the coffee in her mug and stood up, dishes in hand and used her now empty mug to motion to the food. “I’ve had all I can eat, so the rest is all yours if you want it. Help yourself.”

He had no idea that Beth was supposed to be running the room full of different sweet scents and it was doubtful Tobin would have fully understood the concept even if he did. The young wolf had been taught that when a wolf wanted something – but only a powerful wolf, or a weak one like him acting under the orders of someone better – then they simply took it, from human, werewolf and vampire alike. The very idea of bartering or owning things that were not singularly for survival would have puzzled him.
As Beth stood, his followed her with her eyes, waiting until she gave permission before finally allowing himself to examine all the interesting smelling foods on the table. Tobin had never seen that amount of different items before and he had no idea where to start or even what they were. He stared helplessly at the variety, before carefully picking up the thing closet to him and sniffing it gingerly.

“If you need anything at all, I’ll be in front. If you intend to leave- something you absolutely don’t have to do because you’re more than welcome to stay here all day if you want to- will you come tell me before you do please?” She certainly hoped that he would, but if he didn’t agree, she would understand. It’s not like he owed it to her or anything. “If you decide to stick around, you’re more than welcome to come into the shop and keep me company. I mean, if you want to because again, you don’t have to.”
She moved over to the little sink and put her dishes into it. She would come back later and clean them, but for right now, she needed to go into the shop and get ready for any customers that might come in. Speaking of customers, the bell over the door rang, announcing someone’s presence. “I had better go see to whoever just came in. enjoy breakfast.” With that, she headed into the shop to see what she could do for the customer.

The moment Beth left the room, Tobin gasped for air, mentally scrabbling to try and get in some oxygen, to will away the panic that was coursing through his body and making it near impossible to breathe. She’d gone and Tobin hadn’t realised until that very moment how much he had been clinging to her presence because even if she was a human and a female, she was somebody and he didn’t have to be alone – even pain was better than being alone.
There was somebody else in the building. That only added to Tobin’s panic, fear that he could have been found already, they’d tracked him down and now they were going to punish him for speaking to a human. Worse, they would hurt her. Even though Tobin had known the young woman for what felt like mere moments, bile and disgust rose up in him at the thought of his pack getting their hands on Miss. Beth. He knew what they would do to her, what they had done to so many others before now in the name of sport and training.
His food on the table suddenly looked unappealing, the werewolf struggling to his feet to reassure himself that she was really okay.

Out in the shop, Beth greeted a man wearing a nice suit with a smile. “Welcome to Flowers For All. If there’s anything I can do to help you out, please don’t hesitate to ask.”
The man looked at her and gave a smile. He was handsome and had a nice smile, but she couldn’t help but think that he left a bit to be desired when compared with Tobin. As soon as she had that thought, she tried to push it away. That was not how she needed to be thinking about him, but she just couldn’t help it. It was the truth as far as she was concerned and what was wrong with that? It wasn’t like she had just said it out loud or anything.
“Actually, I’m looking for something that I can give to a pretty lady when asking her to dinner.”
The flirting was so obvious it was almost painful. Even so, she gave a nod and started to move around the shop, showing him what was most popular. As she did so, she couldn’t help but notice that he was awfully close.
Just get him to buy and shove him out the door. Okay, so maybe she wouldn’t actually shove him… He ran into her when she stopped. Okay, so maybe she would…

He’d had broken limbs and important bones before, almost too many to count – although he did, and he kept track of them as well because at any time he might be asked the number to make sure he wasn’t going soft. With the painful experience came the ability to move even on the wounds and move well. With the added and unexpected support of the split fastened to his leg, it didn’t take Tobin long to push himself up from the table and move around it, automatically compensating for the weakness in one side. He was ready to fight if the need arose and it always arose.
With one hand, Tobin pushed some of his hair back from his face, the unruly locks always falling back after a few moments, but clearing his vision for now. Carefully, he hobbled forward, moving to stand in the doorframe between the two rooms, silently watching the interaction of the male – human – and Beth. Inside, his wolf warred with the more rational side, torn between fleeing, attacking or just watching. The male was a danger. Tobin knew that, could feel that, as clearly as he knew anything in the world. He just didn’t know how or why.

Taking a deep breath to try and keep her temper, Beth looked to the man and managed to force herself to sound polite, though it was definitely strained. “Roses are always a good flower to go with, but orchids are nice alternative. I also have vases if you think you’ll need one.”
She could feel the man’s breath on her face when he spoke, he was so close. “I’m sure you have plenty of vases, working in a flower shop. Are you busy tonight?”
“Yes, but before you think about asking about another night, I’m not available.” It was a bold faced lie, but this guy couldn’t know that. Rather than thinking that he was handsome like she had thought when she had first seen him, now she just thought he was plain creepy.
“Surely you can get away for dinner or something.”
“No. No, I can’t.” She tried to ease around him in order to get back to the counter, but he grabbed her wrist and it was all she could do not to grab one of her display vases and smash it over his head.
“I’m not asking for much. Besides, I really think you’d like me if you gave me a chance.”
“You’re wrong on both counts. Now let go.” There was no more trying to seem polite with this guy. She couldn’t be bothered. He needed to leave and he needed to now.
As he squeezed her wrist and started pulling her towards him, she dug in her heels and pulled back the best she could. This was starting to look back and she was starting to wonder just how much noise she could make in order to draw the attention of the people in the shop next to hers.

Tobin didn’t realise it but his eyes filled with the supernatural hue of his wolf as he watched the two, so used to showing his other side that it never occurred to him that he should control or hide it. The sight of the man grabbing Beth’s arm was too much however.
Faster than it should have been possible, more so with his broken leg, Tobin crossed the space between the door and the two humans, growl rumbling deep in the back of his throat. He might not have any actual knowledge of interaction between mortals or even any kind of interaction between male and female. Even he knew that you didn’t do that sort of thing. Beth didn’t want to be near the human and that meant she shouldn’t.
He reached out, hand closing over the wrist of the male, using all the restraint he had not to simply snap the bone like kindling. It would be so easy to do so, to just slip back into the rules he had been taught all his life but part of him felt it wouldn’t be right and so he forced himself to do nothing more than squeeze the arm slightly, enough to cause pressure but not enough to hurt him – yet anyway.
“Please let go of Beth. Now.”

The man released her wrist, more from surprise that someone else was there and stepping in than anything. As his attention went to Tobin, Beth stepped out of his reach and watched him warily. She couldn’t decide on what she wanted to happed; on one hand, she didn’t want anyone getting hurt, but on the other, she had to admit that she would get a weird sort of pleasure from seeing this weirdo get his wrist snapped like kindling.
“You’re the reason she’s not available?”
“It’s not any of your business. I’m not and that’s that. When he lets go, I’m calling the cops if you don’t get out of here and I definitely will if you show up again.” And that wasn’t just some empty threat. After this little ordeal, she most certainly wouldn’t hesitate to call if he tried something again. How did she know that he wouldn’t have a weapon if he came back? She didn’t, which was exactly why she was more than ready to call the cops if she had too. Still, her nature of giving someone the benefit of the doubt was what was keeping her from calling the police right now. After a moment, she spoke to Tobin. “You can let go of him. It’s okay.” At least, she hoped it was. Even so, she reached out and picked up a heavy vase, just in case it was needed.
