There was a lot about the human world that Tobin didn’t understand but he was fairly confident they had some kind of system of exchange going on with things like places to stay, food, kindness. It was one that he had been taught was below him, that he and his kind just took. Tobin was sure that wasn’t what the human in front of him meant.
He kept his gaze averted from the woman as she knelt in front of him, trying to work out the best way to answer. “I don’t… I don’t have… things. To be able to stay. I don’t have anything…” A blush sprung up on his cheeks as he spoke, the shame at having to admit yet another weakness intense.

“It’s okay.” That makes things a lot more complicated. I guess I could manage to pay for him to stay a couple of nights at a motel, but after that… I hate to leave him on his own, but I just can’t afford to pay for any more nights than that. Maybe I can figure out something out before it comes to that.
“I can pay for you to stay at the motel for a couple of nights and after that, I should have an idea of somewhere you can stay on a more permanent basis if you need it. I can make a few calls and see what I can come up with. After all, nothing is impossible if you try hard enough.” That’s what she liked to think, anyway.

He hugged his knees, still completely oblivious to the pain he was causing himself. The softness of the blanket that was wrapped around him was more than enough to make up for the agony caused by repeated movement of a broken bone, the advanced healing of his species meaning already his body was trying to knit bone and muscle together, even though he still had to align the two broken pieces back together. If Tobin wasn't careful he was going to have to brake his leg again, should the healing get to such a state that the bone mended incorrectly. It was something that had happened before and had Tobin been thinking clearly he likely would have set the bone right there and then to stop such later pain.
Tobin shook his head timidly, trying to draw up enough courage to defy the human in front of him – whoever she actually was – and refuse such an offer. He couldn't let her do that for him, not least because he couldn't afford to stay here for long. Tobin had to keep moving in case they changed their mind and came back for him. While part of the beaten down wolf would be grateful for such an event to happen, so he would at least know the order of the universe and his place in it, the larger part of him didn't want to be in such a place again. There was also the fact that letting her do that would grant her power over him.
“You can't... you can't do that...”

“You should probably stop moving your leg… You’ll make it worse if you don’t. Let me find something to splint it…” She moved off, finding a piece of wood that she had left in the storage room and grabbed as many rolls of gauze bandages that she could carry, moving back over and sitting in the floor next to him again. “I don’t know exactly what I’m doing, but I’ve got sort of a vague idea…”
She studied him for a moment, knowing that she needed to address the issue about him needing somewhere to stay but not certain as to what exactly she should do. “I really don’t mind paying for you to stay at a motel for a couple of days. It’ really no trouble at all…” I can’t offer to let him stay at my place. It’s not safe to let strangers in, even if I really don’t think that he’d hurt me. Still, isn’t that something that people think about killers sometimes? ‘They seemed so nice.’ I’ve got to be insane for even considering letting him stay in the apartment. I mean, I don’t know anything about him- well, except that he’s apparently a werewolf and a really cute one at that… I don’t even know his name, for goodness sake!
It was time to change the whole name issue. “I’m Beth Ellison.” She offered him a little smile, finding herself wishing that she could help him relax a little; that she could help him.

Tobin looked confused at her words for a moment before his gaze travelled down to his injured leg and comprehension dawned in his eyes. As requested he stilled his leg, letting her sit next to him with the wood, finding that despite having no evidence to support such a thing he trusted her. Normally he didn't trust anyone, his life making it clear that such a feeling was an illusion and a lie – but she was so different to everything he had known and perhaps it made sense then, that she could be trusted to some degree.
“Beth Ellison...” Tobin repeated slowly. It didn't occur to him to offer his own name back in what was the normal form for such a conversation mainly because he had never encountered such a situation before in his memory – those that he could remember clearly at least. “Miss. Beth?” he offered in his lilting accent, curious eyes fixed on her as he tried to think what her correct title could be.

As she began to carefully wrap the bit of wood with some of the gauze in order to make it more comfortable, she ducked her head a bit more, hoping to hide the light blush that came to her face when she heard him call her Miss Beth. You are not going to giggle like some schoolgirl with a hopeless crush, she told herself. You don’t know this guy! Her logical side seemed to be getting quieter and quieter with each passing moment. She refused to giggle, though she had to admit, even if only to herself, that she could sit there, watching him and listening to him talk absolutely all day if she could get away with it.
“No one has ever called me Miss Beth before,” she told him, finally feeling as if she could look to his again and did so, returning her eyes to her task rather quickly in hopes that she could save herself from blushing even more. “People usually just call me Beth, but you can call me whichever you prefer. I don’t mind.” She finished wrapping the wood and looked to him again, tilting her head slightly in curiosity. “What’s your name? I mean, if you don’t mind my asking.”

She hadn't yelled at him, hit him or shown any signs of displeasure at the title of 'Miss. Beth', in fact she had seemed pleased about it. Tobin may not have known much about the way the world worked but his life had taught him how to read tiny signs in people, their body language. The red colouring on her face seemed to indicate pleasure and he mentally made a note of it, wanting to make her happy partly because that felt like the right thing to do and partly because when she was happy she didn't want to hurt him.
“My name?” Tobin paused for a moment, licking his lips in slightly panic as he looked at her, unconsciously fixing her with an expression akin to the 'puppy dog' eyes. “It's... It's... Tob... Tobin. I think... isn't it?” he became more agitated as he spoke, confusion lacing his words.

That look seemed to make her mind stop functioning completely for a moment. If he gave me that look and asked me to kill someone, I don't think I'd be able to tell him no... The logical part of her mind was telling her not to get drawn in while the rest was trying to get it to shut up and just let her do what she would. She felt bad for him- he was clearly agitated- not to mention curious. He's not sure of his name...? How is that possible?
"I wish I could tell you," she said honestly, meeting his gaze. "Tobin is a nice name if that's it." She offered him a smile, hoping to perhaps help him calm down a bit. "I asked because I'd like to know what to call you, but it's okay if you're not sure."

Tobin let out a bark of laughter, somewhere between hysterical and angry as he lifted a hand to his face, pubbing the palm into his eye and apparently forgetting Beth was there for the moment. “I tried so hard to keep the other names, I lowered my guard about my own. Years and years and they start to win and I don't know, I don't know. It could be Tobin... or...” he frowned suddenly, pulling his palm back away from his face to look at it for a moment before fixing his attention on Beth again.
“It could be Doyle...” he told her, clear blue eyes staring at her honestly. “I don't... they took it, I tired to stop them but it hurt and I seem to have forgotten and... they always said I was stupid, and this just proves it. Not knowing what I am any more...” Tobin trailed off, eyes shining with tears. “What am I?”

Beth felt as if her heart was breaking for him, especially when she saw the forming tears. “It’s okay,” she told him gently, stopping in her task in order to rest a hand lightly on his shoulder. “You’ll remember given a little time. I’m sure of it. And I know one thing for certain. You aren’t stupid. After all, you told me exactly which bone you broke and a stupid person wouldn’t be able to do that.” She didn’t really know what to say, but she hated seeing him like this and very sincerely wanted to do whatever she could to make him feel better. She didn’t know if she would be successful at it, but she had to try.
“Maybe… maybe they’re both your name. One could be your first name and one your last. You don’t have to worry about that right now, though. I can be patient.” She offered him a smile. “You’ve definitely got a good starting place with it, though.”

The werewolf had been so wrapped up in his own misery and sorrow that for the first time he had let his guard down slightly, turned in on himself and oblivious to some degree as to her actions. Tobin didn't see her hand descend towards his shoulder until it was actually touching him. He flinched at the contact automatically, cringing away from her touch – all unprepared touching meant pain and often even if you saw it coming, it hurt too.
He cowered against the wall, looking as if he was trying to push himself through it again in order to escape. Try as Tobin might he couldn't control the rapid pounding of his heart, feeling as if it was about to leap up from his throat.

As soon as he flinched, Beth pulled her hand back. Seeing him cower against the wall, she felt her heart break for him. What happened to him…? She couldn’t help the thought and, honestly, she thought that it was a fair one. She had seen someone start from an unexpected touch- she had done so herself on numerous occasions- but this was something that she had never seen before and hoped that she never would again. Now she really did want to bundle him up and get him somewhere safe, preferably somewhere that the world couldn’t get to him. Beth knew that it was a ridiculous thought to be having about someone she had just met, but she didn’t care. His actions and his eyes said that he had been hurt by the world and she found herself desperately wanting to show him that the world wasn’t all bad.
“I’m sorry,” she told him gently, hoping that she could calm him down a little. “I didn’t mean to scare you. I’m not going to hurt you if that’s what you’re afraid of. I wouldn’t. Not unless you tried to hurt me first.”

Hands were brought jerkily to his face, the movement sudden and choppy, Tobin clearly unable to decide what to actually do. It was all just... wrong and he couldn't explain that clearly, couldn't explain that when he looked at the young woman he either saw a person with the potential to hurt him or a animal he was supposed to hunt down and kill. He could remember only too clearly the instructions and beliefs that had been all but beaten into him, the knowledge that women were inferior and worse was a female human.
Tobin screwed his eyes shut and began to rock backwards and forwards slightly, body curled tightly around itself to keep the blanket wrapped around him – he found he liked the softness. Everything was wrong, he didn't want to hurt Miss. Beth but he could hear the orders in his head, could feel the blows almost like a real physical pain. “I don't... I don't...”

Beth was so thoroughly confused that she wondered if there was anything at all that she could say to make things better. She very much doubted it, but she still felt the need to try. She was beginning to worry about him, to wonder just what he had been through that had put him in such a state. Though she had already been wondering that, it almost felt as if the question was attempting to consume her mind, demanding an answer though she didn’t dare ask for fear of crossing some line that she didn’t know the whereabouts of.
“You don’t…?” she asked gently, frowning softly in confusion. She really did want to get to the bottom of what exactly was going on, but wasn’t sure how to go about finding out. Instead of saying anything more, she decided that it was best to let him tell her things at his own pace.

More than anything, Tobin wanted to transform back into the wolf and hide from the world. In wolf form he was stronger, faster and so safer. Tobin could understand the wolf and the wolf world so much better than this, where everything was different. Things were much more simple as the wolf as well. There was need, clear need for food or shelter. Then there was fulfilling that need. Then there was contentment.
Perhaps he was oversimplifying it a bit, but then he had never experienced normal werewolf life, such as a true pack or friends to worry and care about protecting.
“I don't want to hurt...” he whispered, eyes staring blankly down at the floor. Tobin whimpered softly, trying to ignore the sudden pounding headache that appeared at those words, his limbs almost trembling with the effort of restraining himself. Both from changing into the wolf – with his injuries he would only hurt himself more – and from ripping out the throat of the woman in front of him. “I don't want to kill...”
