Beth found the blanket she had mentioned quickly and picked it up, her eyes never leaving the man. Unfolding it, she started forward again slowly, wondering just why he seemed so confused by and afraid of her. She was no threat- she was fairly certain that she didn’t look like one- so she couldn’t understand the fear that she saw in his eyes.
“You can wrap yourself in this and I’ll see what I can find to help with your cuts and leg.” Holds out the blanket to him, offer him a soft smile. “Will you stay here while I go get the first aid kit?” She didn’t want to leave the room if there was a chance that he wouldn’t be there when she got back; she couldn’t stand the thought of him being out in the city as injured as he was.

Tobin stared at the offered blanket for a few seconds before slowly reaching out, one finger lightly running down the side of it. Nothing bad seemed to happen and after another few seconds he gained enough courage to grip it with two fingers, carefully rubbing the fabric between them. It was so soft. Too soft and he dropped the fold of blanket, looking at the woman in bewilderment.
The blanket couldn’t be for his use because he wasn’t allowed things that soft, no matter how good it felt. He blinked a few times before slowly nodding at her last sentence, drawing some comfort from the words. They sounded like an order and he knew how to handle orders at least.

Beth tilted her head slightly in confusion at his reaction to the blanket. It seemed as if they were both confused by each other at the moment and she supposed that she was going to have to step up and take the initiative or it was likely that they would end up just looking at each other the rest of the day. Not that she would have actually minded that- it wasn’t everyday she got to openly just look at a handsome guy- but she knew that things needed to be done and they wouldn’t get anywhere this way.
Opening up the blanket, she draped it over him the best she could, being extremely careful of his leg and other injuries, and stepped back. Because he had nodded to the last bit, she offered a little smile before moving into the shop and quickly getting the first aid kit, returning with it. “This antiseptic stuff stings when it touches a cut, but that means it’s doing its job,” she said, though her voice was apologetic as she settled herself on the floor next to him. “As soon as I have all of your cuts cleaned up, I’ll see what I can do to splint your leg. Even so, you’re going to have to go to the hospital so they can get a cast on it.” She wasn’t really sure why she was stating the obvious, but she was and desperately hoped that it wasn’t annoying.

As she left the room he drew the blanket a little tighter around himself, stroking the softness lovingly with a slightly awed expression on his face. Tobin had never touched anything as delightful as this blanket, let alone be allowed to use it. He hunched up in it, drawing as much comfort from the blanket as best he could, knowing that it wouldn’t last. Nothing like this lasted and he was still waiting for the trap to fall and the nasty surprise to be sprung.
He watched her quietly as she sat down next to him. He wasn’t bothered by the fact whatever she had in her hand would sting – he was more than accustomed to pain. At the mention of hospital however his eyes widened dramatically in fear, his breath catching in his throat. ‘They’ had always said that hospitals were bad. That you only went to hospital if you were dead – and that was if you were lucky.
Tobin didn’t want to be dead.
With a whimper he struggled to his feet as best he could, trying to stumble away from the woman, half falling as he attempted it. He couldn’t go to hospital, he couldn’t, he couldn’t.

Beth had never seen anyone act so adversely to the mention of a hospital. Certainly, they weren’t pleasant places, but his reaction was unlike anything she had ever seen. It surprised and startled her, making her lean away from him slightly before she forced herself forward quickly and into a half standing position in order to attempt keeping him from falling to the floor. “Okay, okay. No hospital. Is that what the problem is?” She tried to re-establish some semblance of calm and order, vaguely noticing that she had knocked over the bottle of antiseptic fluid in her hurry to try and help him, as well as the fact that the cap of the bottle was still on tightly and had prevented it from spilling.
Why would he be so terrified at the mention of going to the hospital? It was a rather idle thought as she tried to settle him back down and get the blanket back into place over him. “You’ll just end up hurting yourself more if you do something like that again and I don’t have any medical knowledge other than being able to do CPR. Just… please don’t do that again, okay?”
Brushing back a stubborn lock of hair that had already worked itself out of her braid, Beth found herself immensely grateful for the bell over the front door of her shop. She had absolutely no idea as to how she would actually explain the situation to someone who might just wander in unannounced. She wasn’t even sure how she would explain it to someone who called and gave her a half hour’s notice of an impending visit. “I’ll just do what I can for you. How’s that sound?”

She hadn’t hit him for misbehaving, for doing something she clearly didn’t want him to do and Tobin meekly sat back down, gripping the blanket tightly as though afraid it would be taken away from him. The young werewolf nodded slowly in agreement to her words, taking some to be orders and thus things he understood in a world of confusion.
“Fibula,” Tobin heard himself saying, his voice rough and the English accent thicker than normal due to the lack of everyday use. He couldn’t remember the last time he had actually spoken real words – the past few days had been nothing more than wolf noises or human cries of pain. Tobin lowered his eyes timidly to the ground, swallowing a few times before he spoke again, hoping he was doing the right thing in increasing her medical knowledge and that she wouldn’t get mad at him for knowing something she didn’t. “I broke my fibula. It’ll heal soon enough on its own.”

Beth gave a little nod and a soft smile as she settled back into her spot. “Well, knowing what you broke is definitely a good start to things. I don’t know anything past some basic first aid and CPR, so if you hadn’t told me, I’d probably never have been able to figure it out. Even if it’ll heal, it’s probably a good idea to at least splint it.”
She had taken the note of his accent- and hadn’t been able to stop the thought that it made him even cuter- as well as the roughness of his voice. “Would you like something to drink before I get started? I have some sodas and water in the refrigerator.” She kept a mini-fridge just inside the door to the storage room and stocked with drinks so she wouldn’t have to find a vending machine every time she wanted something to drink during the day.

This was all too much for Tobin to take in and understand. It was as if he somehow stepped into another world where everything was different and strange. The whole thing reminded him of the rare glimpses of television he had seen as he passed store fronts. Occasionally there would be a character in a different world. Tobin always lingered too long in front of the displays, despite the punishments he would receive for showing interest in something that wasn’t fighting or obeying and worse, something so human.
“I… I…” Tobin swallowed a few times, panic returning to his gaze. He was never offered things, he was either told he wanted them or the question wasn’t really a question. The wolf had learnt to anticipate, to know what the right answer was but that was with them, not her. He didn’t know what the right thing to say was here.

Beth saw the panic and lightly bit her lip, frowning softly. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you. I’ll just be quiet now. If you need anything- anything at all- let me know? I’ll do what I can.” With that, she went about cleaning up the scratches, being as gentle as she possibly could. She really did hate having to treat someone else’s wounds; it was impossible to know if she was hurting them unless they said she was and more often than not, they refused to say anything.
As soon as the cuts her cleaned, she shifted and carefully studied his broken leg, trying to figure out if she had anything she could use to splint it. There were all sorts of things in the storage room and she thought that there was likely something in there that could be used. It was just a matter of figuring out what she had and what would be best in such a situation.

Tobin couldn’t help but feel he had failed the human in some way and he looked away and down, head bent slightly. “I’m sorry,” he whispered, not reacting as she cleaned away the cuts. He hardly felt the medicine anyway, the slight stinging barely noticeable when compared to what he was used to. Most of the cuts and scratches would heal without scarring, the majority made by normal weapons or natural items. One of two however he was sure would however, the wolf half remembering a silver knife just before the change had taken place.
“I’ll have a drink if you want me too,” he offered, trying to make up for his failure as best he could. Inwardly he cringed as soon as the words left his mouth, mentally berating himself. His words made him sound like a failure, and he had been taught for as long as he could remember that even when he had made a mistake and apologised for it, he shouldn’t sound weak. Sorry yes, weak no.

“You don’t have to have a drink if you don’t want it,” Beth told him. “After all, I can’t tell you if you’re thirsty or not.” She stood and gave a little stretch once she was on her feet and glanced around the storage room. “I need to find something to use to splint your leg… I’ll get you something to drink first if you want something.”
As she waited to see what he would say, she tried desperately to figure out what she was going to use. She had some lumber in one corner that had been used to repair a shelf over the little refrigerator that had come crashing down a couple of weeks before. She had some boards that she thought would work- she even thought that a couple were the right size. “After I get your leg taken care of, I can close up long enough to drive you home if you want me to.”

He stared blankly at her, still trying to keep up with the confusing and complicated twists and turns this conversation was taking. Tobin didn’t understand being given a choice that was really a choice and instinctively he suspected a trap of some sort in her words, although what kind of trap he was at a loss to say. Tobin was starting to get tired of this feeling, of being so lost and confused and although it was a step up from pain, it was still unpleasant.
“Home?” Tobin questioned, the puzzled word slipping out despite his best efforts. He had tried to stop himself from asking any more questions and revealing his ignorance but here he couldn’t help himself. “What is home?” he added timidly.

Okay, that one I didn’t expect. After all, who didn’t know what home was? Still, she wasn’t silently scoffing at him for not knowing something so simple. Instead, she felt incredibly bad for him. She had absolutely no idea who he was- the guy could be some sort of psychopath as far as she knew- but Beth found herself wanting nothing more than to bundle him up, take him home with her and take care of him. He really seemed like he needed that- like he needed a friend, someone who cared.
“Where you live… and feel safe,” she told him. Duh, you idiot, what if he’s homeless? That thought suddenly occurred to her and she couldn’t help but wonder if she had made a mistake in talking about home. “I can take you wherever you need to go.” That seemed a little better at any rate, so long as it wasn’t somewhere out of the city.

“Live… feel safe?” Tobin parroted back at her, shifting slightly from his position. He didn’t seem to notice the new wave of pain caused by moving his broken leg, possibly because he was too caught up in the conversation or possibly because he was just used to hurting in some manner or other. Truthfully, Tobin couldn’t remember what it was like not to feel pain or fear of some sort.
Her words made no sense to him, the facts a direction contrast to each other and after a few moments he dropped his gaze to the floor, idly drawing a small circle with one of his fingers on the blanket over and over again. “I don’t have anywhere I need to go. Just… just away,” Tobin whispered, trying to explain himself as best he could. “I have to get away.”

Oh, she definitely just wanted to take him home and spoil him rotten now, there was no doubt about it. He seemed sincere and she was usually really good at reading people. He genuinely seemed to need help and all she wanted was to give it to him if she possibly could. She just didn’t know what she could do for him and that really bothered her.
Kneeling in front of him now, she bit her lower lip, wondering if she should ask him what he was trying to get away from. That seemed like a really important piece of information but she wasn’t sure if asking would be seen as her being too nosy. Instead of asking that, she found herself saying, “I can help you find a place to stay. There are some fairly decent motels in the city and I’m sure we can get you a room at one of them.”
