"Add an 'e' to the end of it and you've got it," she said, looking at the document. At the remarks about redheads, she lifted her eyebrows again. "Are you trying to tell me something, Shep? Because Holly's been after me to give her your phone number again, and if I tell her she stands a better chance by dying those blonde locks of hers red, I bet she just might try it." It was a long-standing joke that Sarah's three girl friends were all more than interested in going out with her good-looking partner, but he wasn't too excited by the prospect.

Taking the document back, he added the letter, and set it down, listening as she spoke. “Holly as a redhead? Look out Los Angeles…” He chuckled to himself, shaking his head again. Setting down his pen, he picked up his coffee mug again, before realising it was empty. Rising from his seat and walking the short distance to get a refill, he poured her a mug as well.
“And I wasn’t necessarily trying to tell you anything,” he reminded her with a smirk, setting her coffee down beside her, before reclaiming his seat opposite. “I was just stating a well-known fact… and by well-known, I mean ‘somewhat theorised’.” Leaning back in his chair carefully, he added, “Besides, if anybody should know all about redheads, it’s you… what do I know?” He offered her a rather boyish grin.

"Oh, thanks." She took a sip. "Well, I know what it's like to be a redhead. I wasn't aware that everyone wanted to be with a redhead -- if that's the case, you'd think I'd have a bit more of a social life." Grinning, she scribbled a series of digits on a piece of paper and tossed it across to his desk. "There's Holly's number, if you think you'd like to see her as a redhead."

“Well,” he began, fiddling with his pen restlessly now, “there’s a different between a redhead, and a redhead cop.”
The piece of paper landed next to the brown bag that had contained his breakfast sandwich. He looked down at it, and then back up at her. “You’re telling me to get Holly to dye her hair?” Chris picked up the number, glanced at it once, and then set it down again. “Wouldn’t that be a bit mean?”

Sarah shrugged, and took another drink of her coffee. "You're the one who said that people either want to be redheads or be with them. I just assumed you yourself fell into that category." She glanced at him. "It's your call if you ask Holly out, but frankly? I think she just wants to put another notch in her headboard, and she's annoyed because she hasn't landed you yet. You're one of those rare men who appears immune to her charms, and it drives her insane."

“Maybe I fall into the former part of that category,” he teased, unable to keep a straight face. He couldn’t imagine how ridiculous he would look as a redhead, so he quickly cleared his throat, and moved right along. “So I’m nothing but a conquest, is that what you’re saying?” He turned his mug on the table. “Now my feelings are hurt,” he sighed, still smiling all the same. “I thought she really cared.”
He couldn’t help it. Chris allowed himself a laugh, bowing his head over for a moment before sighing, and composing himself again. “Holly has charms?” he added ‘cruelly’ as an afterthought. Honestly, Sarah’s friends were pleasant enough, and he got on with them, but it wasn’t exactly a secret that every time he was even near Holly, he was ‘targeted’.

"Oh, Chris, really." Sarah offered him a mild, unconvincing glare. "Here I am, worried about the possibility -- however remote -- of you going out with and losing your heart to that man-eater, and all you can do is make jokes. Just for that attitude, I ought to give her your number." She wouldn't in a million years, and they both knew it, but it was a fun threat to make.

Chris’ laughter stopped at once. “Okay, no more jokes. I’m stopping. See? I’ve stopped.” Clearing his throat again, he checked the computer’s system again, and then glanced down at his paperwork. He realised he’d reacted to that a bit too strongly, but it was too late to rephrase now. He’d made his bed, and he’d have to lie in it. Chris wasn’t entirely sure if that figure of speech was really appropriate, but it didn’t really matter.
Glancing across at her, he narrowed his eyes. “Anyway… you wouldn’t.” He was fairly certain she wouldn’t, anyway, but maybe it would just be for the best to make sure… again.

"Let's just say I'm keeping it in reserve, in case you ever really get out of line," Sarah replied. She went back to work for a minute or two, then paused again.
"So you gonna call her?"

“I’d never get that out of line,” he reminded her, picking up his pen to point with it, for emphasis. “And I might… if the urge strikes me. But don’t tell her that. You won’t get a minute’s peace.” He allowed himself a calm smile, and looked at his ‘In’ box, with the slightest of frowns. Why did he let it build up like that? Then again, he and Sarah were known to balance each other out in almost every other aspect of their jobs, so why not in that department as well?
“You’re not going to tell her you gave me her number, are you?”

"And subject myself to that level of torture? No, thanks!"
She had to admit she was surprised to hear him say he might call Holly. Well, he's not made of stone, for pete's sake... All the same, she hoped he wouldn't. Not that she bore her friend any ill will, but there were a number of reasons why she had never given Chris's number to Holly, or to Jill or Erica for that matter.
Chief among them was her contention that he was, quite simply, too good for any of them.

It was very likely that Chris wouldn’t call Holly. He may have enjoyed her company on the odd occasion when he found it amusing, but he wasn’t the type to go on a date with a girl who, quite bluntly, just wanted to ‘get in his pants’. At least, that was the impression he got when he talked to Sarah about it. All the same, he tucked the number into his desk, should he ever have use for it.
He was the type of guy who dedicated his time to his career, no matter how ‘sad’ that made him look… or pathetic, depending on one’s word of choice. His father had been just the same, and he took after the man quite strongly, in more than one way.
Glancing at his watch, he sighed to himself. “Just over an hour ‘til briefing,” he said unnecessarily, making another note on the document in front of him.

"Be still my beating heart," Sarah grumbled. "I'm counting the minutes."
She signed off on her last document and placed it in the 'Out' tray, yawning. "Got anything over there I can help you with?"

Looking to his ‘In’ tray, and then to Sarah’s large available desk, he considered turning her down, simply because it was his paperwork… and it wouldn’t be too unlike getting a friend to help you with your homework, even if it was only by asking to copy their notes from a class. But then again, with the pile of documents he had to go over, and roughly an hour until their morning briefing… it wasn’t likely that he would get it done without her help.
This is what you get for letting it pile up, he reprimanded himself, giving a sheepish, grateful smile as he offered a couple of files over. “Thanks.”

"Lunch is on you," she replied airily, opening one of the files. She looked at the sheer amount of papers to be processed, and added, "For the rest of the week, apparently."
She worked in silence, letting her mind wind backwards over the previous evening. No sparks, that was obvious, but it had been so long since she'd felt sparks that she barely registered their absence. Just a pleasant evening with a nice, normal guy, and for once, one who wasn't intimidated by a sergeant's badge. This might possibly work.
