"Oh, come on. I can see you avoiding the clubs -- when you dance you look like a monkey on crack. No offense to monkeys on crack. But you're not that clumsy in the rest of your life, I bet you could stay in the boat." She was satisfied, however, that he promised to give the matter some thought, and turned her attention back to her work.
Vaguely, she wondered what her new accountant friend did to relax. Having someone to do things with made trying new activities a lot easier, and her girl friends were rarely up for something more interesting than combing a club.
"I've kind of always wanted to try rock climbing," she admitted out loud.

“Rock climbing?” Chris pondered that for a minute, setting his half-drained mug down on the desktop again, away from his paperwork. “That doesn’t actually sound half bad.” He seemed sincere about that opinion as well. It was certainly ‘high-adrenaline’ enough for him — or both of them, really, to be fair — and would certainly keep him from getting bored.
“There’s bound to be indoor places to do it in the city as well… so, y’know, you don’t get out to a huge rock-face and realise you don’t know what you’re doing.” He shrugged. “I hear death’s not very fun…”
Again… you’re not funny. Give up.

I initially posted this a few hours ago, but the browser crashed and ate the post. Sorry.
"Now that you mention it," Sarah mused, ignoring his comment about death, "I think Jill mentioned they were opening a place like that near their apartments. Definitely safer than climbing on actual rocks...might be worth checking out."
She picked up another document. "Chris, give me a break, this case was over a week ago. How long have you been letting your paperwork pile up?"

Chris inhaled, holding the breath as he tried to calculate. “A… uh, little while,” he offered, clearing his throat awkwardly afterwards, as if they could just breeze right over his disorganisation. He wasn’t always this way; they’d just had a hectic few weeks, and things had just… piled up on him. He’d tried to keep on top of everything, but at the end of each day, he’d just been too exhausted to deal with the frustration of paperwork, hence his ‘In’ tray.
“Anyway,” he said, going back to their discussion of hobbies. “They start you on trainee walls or something, don’t they? I’ve never actually done it, but I had a friend in high school who went every week. Of course, he’s was kind of an adrenaline junkie, so… he probably only went to the indoor places because his parents made him. He was the type who’d do the real thing without the safeties.” He shrugged. Some people just enjoyed living on the edge, literally.

Sarah shook her head at his paperwork buildup, and continued her assistance. "I suppose they do," she replied thoughtfully. "I've never been to one of those places, myself, but that stands to reason. Guess I could call Jill and ask her if she's been there yet." She glanced across the desk. "I'll be sure to leave out the fact that you're interested...don't want anyone getting ideas about places they could 'accidentally' run into you, after all." She smirked.

Her partner chuckled, amused but quietly grateful. He could only imagine Holly showing up wearing something not entirely appropriate for the activity, trying to climb a make-believe rock face. It actually had the potential to be funny, but he didn’t want to take any risks, after all.
“Sounds like a plan,” he noted, nodding his head before setting aside another document. “Okay, maybe not having any cases today is a blessing in disguise. With any luck, I— we’ll,” he corrected sheepishly, “get these done before the day’s out.”

"Well, we'd better. I'm not staying late just 'cause you're hopelessly disorganized," Sarah taunted him. "And you're definitely not getting out of taking me to lunch." She glanced at the clock and added, "Which will be a late one, I'm guessing."

“We’ve got plenty of time,” he assured her, after glancing at his watch. There were a good few hours until lunch, and they were already making progress. “Are you doubting our combined skills, Sarah? I’m disappointed… where’s the faith?” He’d finished yet another cup of coffee, but given how much he’d had since walking in the door, he decided against a refill. For the moment, anyway…
Granted, his plan to get all the documents finished would be going better if he wasn’t having trouble reading his own scruffy, rushed handwriting. The details of the cases weren’t a problem, and after he’d woken up properly, his spelling was back to its usual state, but now, he just wished he’d taken the time to neaten things up a little.

"I have plenty of faith in us, Sheppy. I'm just worried about how long it'll take the handwriting expert to get here and figure out what the hell these papers actually say." Sarah shook her head over his indecipherable scrawl.
She was glad that he'd seemed interested in the rock climbing. For one thing, it would be good for him. For quite another, as she'd already ruminated, trying the new activity wouldn't be quite as daunting now that she knew she would have someone with her. All the same, however...
"Remind me to ask Henderson if his cousin likes rock climbing," she remarked. "Maybe I'll invite him to go with me this weekend."

Chris had chuckled almost wearily at her quip about his handwriting, wondering when their apparent reading of one another’s minds had actually started in the first place. Some days, they were so in-tune with one another that they could finish sentences, think exactly along the same lines, and predict what the other was going to say. Then again, that was how they were on most days; it wasn’t so unusual anymore, and part of the reason others in their department probably wondered if there was more going on than met the eye.
“Will do,” he said to her with a nod and an understanding smile, making a note on his document, before flipping the page over and checking the other side. He knew it wasn’t that Sarah didn’t want to check out the activity with him, but the fact that she seemed so optimistic about Henderson’s cousin, and his potential interest? It comforted Chris really; Sarah deserved a break, after all.
They both did. But then again, they were both in the ‘bad’ habit of looking out for their partner’s well being and best interests before their own…

"All right, that's one folder finished." Sarah leaned forward to drop the file into Chris's outbox. "Jill's off today, I think, so why don't I take a well-deserved break -- since all my work is done," she added cheekily, "and call her now."
Without waiting for a response, she flipped open her little silver phone and pressed the speed-dial button for her least annoying gal pal. "Hey, Jillie....yeah...." She glanced at Chris and rolled her eyes good-naturedly as she said, "The date was okay....probably, yeah....I know, write the date on the calendar, right? Eh, I'll tell you later. Listen, wanted to ask -- didn't you say they were opening one of those indoor rock-climbing places near where you live?" She paused, listening. "Really?"
Another pause, and then her green eyes grew comedically wide with astonishment. "Are you serious? Oh, that's too funny -- I mean, it wouldn't be funny if she'd gotten hurt, but since she didn't...yeah. Yeah, you know what I mean." She grinned; of her three girl friends, Sarah liked Jill the best, partly because their senses of humor were compatible. It was nothing like the bond she had with Chris, but then again, what was?
"Right. Okay." She grabbed a pen and started writing down an address. "Oh, how does it work, anyway? They start you on a training wall?" she added, remembering Chris's question. "Uh-huh...ohhh. Gotcha." Sarah laughed. "Yeah....yeah, maybe....we'll see. All right, I gotta go, I'm at work....I will. Call you later. Bye, hon."
Closing the phone, she said with a chuckle, "Jill says to tell you hi." She figured he wouldn't mind that too much -- Jill was the only one of the three who didn't pester Sarah about being set up with Chris. She'd been involved with someone when they'd all first met the good-looking male cop, but even after the relationship had ended, she'd respected the boundary Sarah had set with regards to her partner. "And yes, they start you on a training wall."

While Chris should have, sensibly, used the time Sarah was on the phone to concentrate on his paperwork, he found himself listening, and even watching. That was how he caught the eye-roll she offered him, and smiled in return, catching his partner’s side of the conversation, and only hearing the odd muffled word from the other end of the cell phone.
“Well… when you speak to her next, say hi back,” he offered with a little smirk, glancing down before remembering she’d said something else, too, and therefore lifting his gaze to acknowledge that as well. “And it definitely sounds like it’s worth checking out. It’s not like my social life is filled to the brim, so it’s worth a shot.” He smiled, teasing himself, as she would know. It was something of a running joke how little the two did outside of work, but Chris wasn’t all that bothered by the lack of entertainment beyond his job. At least, if he was, he didn’t show it.

"Yeah, well, wait til you hear what Jill had to say," Sarah replied, grinning, as she reached for another file. "Apparently some of the instructors are rather buff, and so -- well, I'm sure you can imagine Holly had to try it out. From what Jill said, she actually fell off of the beginner wall because she was trying to show off how agile and limber she is. Of course, they have you harnessed in, so she didn't get hurt, but she was so humiliated she refuses to go back. Her excuse is that 'climbing rocks is lame.'" She shook her head, still chuckling.

“That sounds like Holly all right,” Chris agreed, smiling as he folded and set aside another document, before glancing at the pile, and then the clock. “See, I told you we’d be done by lunch. We’re a formidable force,” he joked with a smirk, indicating the paperwork.
He found himself briefly wondering if Holly would show her face again at the activity’s centre if she found out Chris was going. Even after hearing about it so many times, Chris still couldn’t get used to the fact that one of Sarah’s friends was so interested in him. He knew Holly was a flirt, though, so he supposed he wasn’t exactly the only one she focused on. But did that make it better or worse?
Not that it matters. You’re not going to date her, are you? Exactly.

Sarah blinked. "Wait, that's it? You weren't as far behind as I thought." She stretched, gave a light yawn, and went to refill her coffee cup -- deliberately not filling his, in retaliation from his not filling hers earlier.
"So, where are we going for lunch, then?" she asked, sitting down. With a teasing grin, she added, "I could go for filet mignon...."
