Continued from: Upstairs Offices — Narcotics Division with Sarah.
Chris followed his partner into the specially designed room, which was set up in a part of the station away from the main offices and ‘reception’. Not only was it suitably soundproofed, but every precaution had been taken to ensure that no one got hurt accidentally. They didn’t have to use their regulation sidearms if they didn’t choose to, but for the most part, it was easiest. Using a personal firearm in the officers’ range required at least a ‘clearance’ with whoever was manning the area. Chris had never bothered going to the trouble of using his own gun in the range; if he wanted to practise with that, he went to an outside source in the city. Here, he always used his regulation weapon.
Claiming a pair of protective goggles and ‘headphones’, Chris moved over to the front of the range, alongside his partner. “I’d say we should bet on this,” he began, taking his gun from its holster and checking its magazine, “but we already know who’s buying lunch.” Green eyes angled almost slyly in her direction for a moment before he clicked the magazine back into place.

"And a good thing for me, too," Sarah returned archly. "The only way I've ever managed to win a bet with you down here is if I put my money on you." Sarah was by no means a bad shot, but Chris was a better one, and she acknowledged it freely. Like he had, she donned the protective headgear and took her position.
Once locked and loaded, she gave Chris a nod. Conversation was about to become an impossibility.

Chuckling, he checked his headphones were secure, disengaging the safety from his gun before aiming. The targets were already set up, and would be changed periodically. Sighting down the length of his arms, and the gun he held, Chris paused, waiting until he was comfortable. And then squeezed the trigger, three times in succession. The deafening crack of the gunshots was muffled by the headphones, but he could feel the gun jerk in his grip slightly with each shot.

Showoff, Sarah thought, albeit affectionately. She soon ignored his shots as she began putting a succession of her own into the target confronting her. With paper villains she had no compunction about shooting to kill, something she desperately tried to avoid when facing flesh and blood suspects. They both did, generally.

Subconsciously, Chris registered his partner’s ‘success’ in the next lane, as it were, seeing just to his left how her shots impacted the target opposite her, even as he emptied his clip steadily into his own. His shots were focused around the chest area, but a simple upward tilt of the barrel of his Beretta put the final shot into the paper target’s head outline. Lowering his arms, and rolling his shoulders slightly to loosen them that little bit more, he listened through the muffling headphones as Sarah’s gun continued to fire.
Ejecting his empty magazine from the gun, he slotted a new one in, waiting until a new target presented itself before starting the whole process off again. His eyes never wavered from the target, sighting down the weapon he held, simple though it was. Truth be told, he would prefer to do the entire thing without the protection, but regulations were regulations; they were there for a reason, and who was he to break the rules…?

Sarah was getting into "the zone," now; she was becoming less and less aware of anything around herself as she worked to increase her precision and skill. She was, however, still marginally alert to the fact that Chris was nearby and standing upright. Instinct born of a partnership nearly four years old would forever keep her attuned to his presence and well-being. It was one factor in why they worked together so well -- not only were they, admittedly, closer than most police partners deemed healthy, but they each sort of viewed the other as a personal extension. Sarah could no more remain ignorant to Chris's proximity or condition than she could fail to notice that one of her own arms had been cut off.
This went on for quite some time, and finally, she stepped out of the shooting area and removed the safety equipment. It was getting close to time for that promised lunch, after all, and she waited patiently for 'the shepherd' to notice this fact.

Chris wasn’t even sure how much time had passed when he finally stopped pulling the trigger. Reaching up, he pulled the headphones and goggles off after setting the Beretta down for a few minutes. Turning his head, he saw Sarah standing off to the side waiting. “I get caught up in it again?” he asked with a chuckle, knowing that was one of his subconscious habits. He got too wrapped up in the practise, and tended to ‘zone out’. Glancing down, he saw he’d actually gone through a few clips.
Oops?
Putting a fresh magazine into his regulation sidearm, he turned on the safety, checked it, and then slipped it back into his hip holster where it belonged. Returning the other bits and pieces to where they belonged, he joined his partner after checking his watch. “Well, that killed some time, anyway. Looks like I’m not getting out of that lunch, huh?” Chris offered her a brief grin.

"Shepherd, pet, you know by now that if there's one thing I'd never let you out of, it's buying me lunch." Sarah returned the grin. "You want to eat out, or go and get the food and occupy some space in the break room?"

“Decisions, decisions…” Then again, it all depended on who had been occupying the break room so far that morning, and who, if anybody, was occupying it now. It wasn’t that Chris didn’t get along with most everybody, because he more or less did, with only odd exceptions. It was just that some people smoked, and he hated eating around smokers, or people who could light up at any second… and the station had a fair few smokers in their crowd.
“How about we head up and see who’s there? That way, if we go out and grab food to bring back, we can play delivery… people… along the way.”
Or something to that effect.

"That seems fair. Though I hope you don't plan on treating everyone -- I wouldn't feel nearly as special," she teased him. "C'mon, let's head for the break room and see how claustrophobic it is."
