"So level with me," Sarah said as they made their way down the stairs. Amid all the usual hustle and bustle of the main room of the police station, it would have been difficult to overhear them, and she felt she could speak a bit more freely. "Other than when I've made food, when was the last time you ingested anything that wasn't delivered, picked up, or served on a plastic tray?"

“You were always in ‘the tribe’… you just never noticed, because my dork qualities are far superior. Or something.” He pulled a face. “Did I just call myself a big dork? Because if I did, I think I’ve been awake too long, which means I should probably… sleep.” He was losing coherence, and made a noncommittal ‘meh’ noise.
Shrugging it off quickly, he moved on in the conversation as Sarah did. Chris cocked his head as he thought over his response. “I had toast for breakfast yesterday?” It wasn’t much of an answer, but it was an honest one, anyway. He’d forced himself to eat it then, simply because he’d needed something other than coffee and Mountain Dew to give him energy.

"You are a big dork, and you just proved it." Sarah laughed. "All right, I'll tell you what. You keep my mind off my bizarre dating situation -- the whole business with Henderson's cousin, you know -- and I'll cook at your place. Sound fair?"

Eh, I can live with being a big dork. It could be worse. He wasn’t sure how it could be worse, but it was ‘their little secret’ anyway. He enjoyed watching cartoons in the mornings before work, and he made stupid jokes; what was the harm in that? Everyone had their childish impulses, and he was no exception. He was sure Sarah had her little guilty pleasures as well, and he didn’t doubt that Miles had more than his fair share.
“Ooh.” Chris sounded intrigued, smiling in his usual, almost sly manner. “Now that’s an offer I can’t refuse.” Pausing just past the desk out of the way, he offered a hand. “You’ve got yourself a deal.”

They shook, and she laughed. "Question, however," she said, moving toward the door. "Do you have any actual food in your refrigerator?"
"Uhh...."
"That's what I thought." Sarah shook her head. "Come on. Grocery store."
