"Just... drive safe okay?"
Julian Mercer spoke into his cell phone, frowning lightly as he walked the perimeter of the police building, his free hand resting on his hip, thumb to the back, and fingers to the front. Shelley was driving back from her mother's that night, he had told her to just stay over for the night and then come back in the morning since she didn't have to work, but typically she didn't listen. Apparently staying with her mother any longer than necessary was not a happy thought.
From the other end of the line came a sigh, light and amused though it was, "Julian, please, I'll be fine," she said, "I don't want you worrying about me
"You know I can't help it." Julian shrugged, turning away from group of cops exiting the building, "Especially when I miss you."
"I know. I miss you too."
"You'll call when you get in?"
Shelley laughed down the phone line and Julian couldn't help but smile, sometimes he asked the dumbest questions, after a moment she composed herself and agreed; "You'll throttle me if I don't, so yeah, I will."
Nodding, Julian rubbed the back of his neck, looking back towards the entrance of the PD, knowing he really needed to get back to his desk and to his partner. "Okay." He said slowly, reluctant to hang up, "Just--"
"--drive safe." Shelley interrupted, knowingly, "I get it, honey. Go catch some bad guys."
They exchanged goodbyes, and then the call ended. Julian stood for a minute in the twilight, looking down at his phone. Maybe t was sappy of him, maybe he was just as much of a softie as his brothers always said he was, but when Shelley was out of town he missed her so much it was a little maddening. Hell, when she was in her apartment and not his it was maddening, something he needed to fix, clearly. Try as he might he could never get that damned kindergarten teacher out of his head completely when he didn't know where she was specifically. Maddening. Only in so much as he knew he wouldn't change one thing about his girlfriend and the way he felt about her.
Smiling inanely at the cell phone, it was the sound of an engine coughing to life that broke the young detective out of his thoughts. Clearing his throat, adjusting his loose tie, he turned and made his way back towards the homicide department. Tie to get back to work and try, no matter how in vain it would be, to put Shelley Craig out of his head.
