Continued from: Alleys and Streets; Main Streets with Lynnette
Nick shot her a grin and little did he know that they were both nervous and excited and it was over the exact same thing. “Yeah. Can’t have my baby’s interior messed up,” he joked back. “I’d hate to have to have it cleaned and explain that my neighbor exploded all over everything. They’d probably charge extra.”
The wind sweeping into the car was refreshing and he hit the button to roll his own window down and, after a moment’s thought, put the top back again, having unthinkingly put it back up when he was pumping gas. It was habit.
“That’s better,” he muttered to himself as he drove, the wind whipping around them. He was already feeling a bit freer and couldn’t wait to actually run. “If it’s too windy for you, I’ll put the top up again.”

Lynnette laughed, and a little louder than she’d intended. She covered her mouth, stifling a rather girlish giggle, and when she had composed herself enough to respond, she lowered her arm and said, “Oh, I could see the looks on their faces. If I hadn’t just exploded all over the interior, I’d ask for a picture.” It was silly as all get out, but it was fun, and that was the point. The evening had just been one entertainment leading into another; a common occurrence when with Nick, she had discovered. Whether they were shopping for groceries, eating takeout, or driving along the back roads outside of central Los Angeles, she enjoyed herself.
When the top rolled down, the wolf in Lynnette pined for her to stand up and feel it whip through her hair again. But she resisted, if only because she watched TV and movies, and knew of the freaky accidents that most certainly could happen; just because she was a werewolf, that didn’t mean she was immune to having her head taken off by some randomly placed cherry-picker.
“No, it’s great,” she told Nick, shaking her head. “Either I’m crazy, or the air’s fresher out here. Am I nuts, or do you smell it too?”

Nick gave a laugh of his own. “Well, I’d much rather you stay all in one piece and not just because I want to keep from having to explain what guts are doing all over the interior.” Well, that was… sort of flirting, he supposed. Certainly not anything spectacular but he thought that it was at least tame enough not to send her running for the hills.
He really did love the way he felt when he was around Lynnette. It was amazing and very nearly impossible to explain. He was old enough that he really didn’t think he had to worry about his feelings being nothing more than the moon. His feelings were as real as they came and he knew that perfectly well. Now if only he could get up the nerve to tell her. Plenty of time for that. Plenty of time.
Nick took a deep breath. “If you’re nuts, then I am too. The air really does smell fresher.”

Again, she laughed. Nick could just provoke that in her so easily, and honestly, she wanted to thank him for that. Since leaving her pack, she hadn’t had many opportunities to laugh so freely, but now that she had him for a friend — though her brain was arguing that it should be more, no matter how much she told it to be quiet — she felt she could do so on a daily basis. It was so rejuvenating; almost freeing, in a way. She realised now what she had been missing out on. “Well, I appreciate the thought, because honestly? I’d rather stay in one piece too. I like everything being attached.”
Being quite a bit younger than Nick, Lynnette couldn’t so easily say that she was perfectly in control, but she was old enough to know the difference, and tonight, she had a remarkable amount of containment when it came to her wolf, and all the instincts and urges it unleashed in her during the lunar cycle’s peak of every month. Some cycles were worse than others… and she couldn’t help but wonder if all she’d been lacking in order to help her was just what she had now… company. Maybe it was Nick’s presence that helped. She supposed she couldn’t really be sure, but she liked the explanation, and held onto it optimistically.
“Makes a nice change,” she commented with a content sigh, angling her head back to take in a deep lungful of it. Everything smelt so crisp, and new; leaves and branches, mud and grass, animals and even water, from somewhere. She had no idea everything was so sharp out here. “God, I’m practically shaking… how pathetic.” She flushed for a moment. “You’d think I’d never run on open land before…”

“I don’t suppose I can convince you to lean across and drive so I can tilt my head back and take a good lungful, can I?” Nick frowned at himself as soon as he had said it. That was just really, really stupid. “Never mind. That was ridiculous. It’s got to be the excitement of getting to go running. And I don’t think you practically shaking to be running is pathetic. I’m just about to that point myself.”
Since being turned, Nick had never actually kept company with another werewolf. Certainly he had spoken to others, but he had never really spent time with any of them. He had never really wanted to. Lynnette, though, was a completely different story. He wanted to spend as much time as he possibly could with her. When they were together, he felt more alive than he could ever remember having felt before and when they weren’t, he was wishing they were.

Stupid though Nick may have thought it, Lynnette was amused by his comment, and she laughed. “It may have been ridiculous, but I won’t deny it was funny,” she assured him calmly. “And at least I’m not alone. I guess it’s just adrenaline or something.” That was her best guess, anyway. She just hoped the moon didn’t decide to play games with her head once she’d changed. She hated the idea of losing it, even if only a little, around Nick…
It won’t happen. You know what you’re doing.
It had just been so long since she’d run with another wolf… she honestly couldn’t remember when she had last done something so natural and right. Her pack had been male-dominant to the extreme, the females kept only for breeding and necessity, and they certainly hadn’t been allowed the frivolity and freedom of the young males. She found herself trying to recall if she had ever run with another werewolf, and for a moment, tears of sadness at the failure to recollect such a thing flashed their way into her eyes, before a sharp blink banished them.
“Well, the city’s behind us now,” she said, thanking her resolve for the steadiness in her voice after her falter. “Shouldn’t be long before we start seeing some options.” She found her brown eyes gazing around hopefully, looking for something with a lot of foliage and open ground, where they could dart and hide and chase. The more she thought about it, the more she realised she needed this, and the idea of not getting it almost hurt.

Nick hadn’t been able to resist grinning when Lynnette laughed. He honestly didn’t mind making an idiot out of himself when the reward was her laughter and that was really saying something considering that had anyone else laughed about it, he probably would have punched them in the nose. Lynnette though… she could laugh at every stupid thing he did or said and he wouldn’t say a word against it. “Probably is,” he said, agreeing with the statement about it being adrenaline or something.
Had he caught sight of the tears, Nick would have pulled the car to a stop right then- screw blocking any other traffic- and would have questioned what was wrong and would have done anything and everything in his power to cheer her up. As it was, though, they had gone unnoticed due to the fact that he was maneuvering the car around a turn in the road.
“If you see anywhere that you like, just let me know and I’ll find a spot to pull over. Now that we’re out of the city, I’m not likely to be particularly picky.” He shifted slightly in his seat, his desire to run just as strong as Lynnette’s. Nick didn’t know if he would say he needed it, but he certainly wanted it and that was more than enough for him.

She was grateful Nick apparently hadn’t noticed the tears in her eyes; explaining that to him, no matter how much she trusted him, would have been just too hard. Even though she felt like she could trust him with anything, including her life, talking about her past just… she didn’t think she could do it. Not even with Nick. Not yet. She wasn’t sure if she’d ever be able to, but one day, she hoped she would be, if only to see if it relieved a weight off her shoulders that had been constant for so many years.
Her eyes were glued to the outside of the car, moving from one patch to the next, and occasionally moving to Nick’s side of the vehicle to scout out that way, alert for any viable options. She had confirmed his comment with a firm nod and a ‘right’, and now, she was like a hunter trying to catch sight of prey, silent and attentive; focused.
Several minutes passed before something finally caught her attention. There, off to the right of them, she saw a dense patch of what looked like shadow, but she focused her vision and recognised it as a heavy build-up of trees, surrounded by what could almost pass for vacant fields. It was perfect. Immediately, she pointed; “There!” And then she composed herself, smiling sheepishly, but her expression was hopeful as she looked at him. “What do you think?”
