Devin always thought it was silly when a human managed to keep their optimism and continued to think that they would live to see the next day. Unless, of course, they were immensely entertaining and he decided to see how long he could make them last. Then they always seemed to decide to think that making it to another day somehow meant that they were certainly going to be making it out of the room alive. In the end, they all learned how futile such hopes and beliefs really were. Nothing was going to save them from whatever he might decide to do to them in that room, something that quite a few of his ‘playmates’ had not realized until the very end.
As the waitress made her way steadily towards them, Devin tried to decide if the shyness in her smile was real or something she thought might make her more attractive. If it was the latter, then it was a silly notion. She had already caught his attention, but he knew that it wasn’t in the way she was hoping to. Humans were so naïve sometimes, it was almost funny.

Humans, silly little mortals. So naïve and hardly worth the effort in the long run. By the time they started to get interesting, they were dead, from either torture or just ‘old’ age. Old. They didn’t know the meaning of the word, couldn’t even begin to comprehend what it would be like to life for any real length of time. She had lived a lifespan that would break the mind of a human if they learnt it and believed it. Showing them the side of the world that they had never known about was always a guaranteed enjoyment, if only for their denial and unpleasant realisation. Nothing like realising you were held captive by creatures of myth, who were stronger, faster, smarter than you to break down that optimism.
Kaida thought it was probably a mixture of the two. The girl – mortal, dull and in her own not unbiased view, plain – was clearly not used to male attention, either attracting it or dealing with it. So she smiled at Kaida’s man, her pitiful little heart all a flutter at the unexpected boon of any male taking notice of her. But the human, inexperienced as she was, was still a female and some things were just inherent; knowing what attached men were among that. Most males seemed to find shyness and the willingness to be led appealing. It made her laugh inside to see it used against Devin, to think that the girl thought she had any chance with him in the romantic sense.

As naïve and, in the end, worthless as they were, Devin could say two good things about them: there were plenty of them to choose from and they were entertaining when they were being tortured. Then again, he supposed just about anyone would be whether they were human, werewolf or vampire. Still, he preferred humans, just because he had a long standing grudge against the species as a whole. They were easier to kill if he got bored before they died of their injuries, though, admittedly, some of them didn’t last as long as he would have liked them to. That could be annoying, but he tended to get over it when he got his hands on someone that lasted longer and lived long enough to at least give him the opportunity to shatter their poor little minds with the knowledge that he was a werewolf. It was always entertaining to see the shock on their face when they saw that thinking that werewolves were nothing story had been wrong.
Though Devin had still not decided if the shyness was an act, he returned her smile with one of his own, though it was more of what he called ‘Lets get together’ than shy. He could see by the subtle change in her smile that she had picked up the message and was considering it. That was perfect. He had more fun when he could lure them in.

Kaida wasn’t sure that their numbers were a positive point in their favour. It meant that there was always something new on hand and plenty of choice, which was always a good thing but it also meant there was always something new on hand. Countless numbers of humans, milling around, polluting the world with their continued filthy existence, it was a wonder – and at times a disappointment – that they hadn’t managed to all kill themselves by now and do the werewolves and vampires a favour. Without humans, vampires would be a lot easier to track down and dispose of, since they needed humans to survive, with their sad little connected existence. And then, only superiority would remain in the form of the wolf.
There would still be unclean ones running around of course, but that was what Kaida and Devin were there for, to clean up the mess and help purify while having a great deal of fun. The human female was someone who was crying out to be purged from the world. If Kaida had been in a less pleasing mood it would have angered her and ignited her suspicions, the way in which Devin and the girl were talking through smiles and eyes. As it was, her anger was only directed at the human, hidden though it was. How dare the girl try and steal someone’s man, right under their nose; only Kaida was allowed to do that. She was going to enjoy Devin making the human pay.

Humans were a disgusting race in their way, but they certainly were fun to torment. A little too fragile, perhaps, but that was all right. Vampires weren’t much better, of course, but at least they hadn’t caused them any problems yet. Still, a world free of both humans and vampires would have been a superior one, even though that would never happen. As fragile as humans were, they were like cockroaches- it was impossible to kill all of them because every time one was killed, there were millions of others to take its place. Humans were more fun than cockroaches, though, because they screamed, begged and bled.
The little human thought she was doing a great job at luring him away from Kaida, something Devin could tell just by watching her eyes and the way she stood just a little too close to him. She probably thought that he was in an unhappy relationship and that it wouldn’t take any really work at all to steal him away. If only the pathetic female knew just how wrong she was… Not to mention how incredibly foolish it was to want anything to do with him. All the same, it made things easier. She was doing all of the work for him, letting him know that it would be easy enough to draw her into his playground.
When she asked if they knew what they wanted, the human leaned just a bit closer to Devin. Oh, yes. This would be easy. Perhaps even disappointingly so; maybe she would make up for it when he started work on her.

It was both pathetic and invigorating, the scene unfolding on the other side of the table as the human all but screamed take me now with her eyes. Pathetic on the side of the waitress, invigorating on the side of her mate, to see him play the nameless little toy so delicately. Hunger coiled in the base of her stomach, hunger born out of the desire for meat – how hard was it for two steaks to be cooked – but also born out of Devin’s presence. She wanted him, could almost taste him on her lips. She also wanted to join in the game, even though the female knew any action on her part right now would only work against them both.
That restless spark of energy was threatening to ignite in Kaida’s chest at the sight of Devin toying with the female. It had been far too long since she herself had been able to play with someone for any length of time – there were the men she picked up in bars and clubs but those morsels tended to last a single night. The chase was disappointingly fast and over too quickly – human males have never seemed to learn self-control or patience, preferring premature action over substance. For Kaida, there was almost as much fun to be found in the hunt as in the hurt. She needed a project, some hapless male she could string along for longer than a night, stripping him of all his money and his friends until he had nothing left but her. Then and only then, would she go in for the kill.
Only by focusing on such pleasant thoughts could Kaida allow the actions of the mortal to pass, blond glancing out the window as though utterly oblivious to the way in which the girl was all but pressing herself up against Devin.

Beneath the table, Devin moved his leg a bit so he could press his foot lightly against the side of Kaida’s leg as he told the waitress what they would have to eat, inviting her to speak up if he got her part of their order wrong. Not that she needed an invitation, of course.
As she wrote down what he said, Devin noticed that the waitress actually seemed to manage to move a bit closer to him as she did so. Considering she was practically on top of him as it was, that was actually saying something. He had been sure that there was not enough room left between them for her to manage to get any closer, but she had just proven him wrong and he really wasn’t sure how he felt about it. On the one hand, it told him that she was most certainly interested and was probably already easy prey, but she was too close for comfort and he needed his space. The only one allowed so close to him was his mate, but he knew that he couldn’t snap and make the waitress back off without undoing all of the work that he honestly hadn’t had to do this time. When it came right down to it, he supposed he could handle the waitress being in his space if it meant keeping her off guard and easy prey.
