Continued from: Alleys and Streets: Main Streets with Devin
Occasionally his need to be reassured would coincide with one of Kaida’s moods to be openly affectionate, and it was on those times that she had no problem saying the words, over and over again if she had. It was perhaps, her own way of being reassured, of knowing that she was wanted and needed and that Devin would not manage without her. In a way, it was less about love than the knowledge she was the most important person in another’s life but those moods were very rare indeed, reflecting a selfish part of her personality that even Kaida herself was loath to admit to. Far better to simply enjoy the fact she could tease out noises with her touches without ever really thinking deep about why and how she enjoyed it.
The steakhouse was less offensive on the outside than the others they had passed but even so, it had been a relief to step inside to the almost empty restaurant, Kaida only barely suppressing the sniff of distain at the fact that the humans were so dumb and concerned with themselves that they didn’t realise such a place with such good food existed. Chiefs tended to be tetchy types and Kaida did not want the man to think her disgust was aimed at him. Not when she and her Devin had such plans on how they would eventually reward the man for his skills – perhaps even the greatest reward of all, a quick death.

He tried not to be needy- he didn’t like being needy- but sometimes something inside him just seemed to become immensely annoying and he found himself needing reassurance. When he was over it, he was always annoyed with himself because that wasn’t who and what he wanted to be. He wanted be the strong mate that Kaida wanted and he liked to think that he managed to be that most of the time. It was just that sometimes, whatever it was that made him need the reassurance that she cared in whatever way she did made him need reminding of it.
Devin breathed in deeply, taking in the delicious scent of cooking meat, his stomach rumbling almost pointedly. He, personally, was ready for a good, thick steak, preferably rare. He glanced around, taking note of where the few people who were already there had taken up seats and looked to Kaida. “Anywhere in particular that you’d like to sit?”

Kaida cared. In her own, no doubt cold and bizarre way when viewed by an outsider but her affection for Devin could not be denied. Had things been different, and Devin’s mind not permanently altered by her home pack’s actions then perhaps they both would have been a normal, boring couple. Her mate was not the only one to be changed forever by those events in Russia, although Kaida as a whole liked to think she was the saner of the two; murderous impulses or not, she could at least control them when Kaida had to.
Disgust at the humans scorning the place by leaving it so sparsely occupied aside, Kaida in a fit of a paradox preferred it as near empty as it was. It meant she and Devin could talk and eat without been interrupted or infested by humans while at the same time she could maintain her superior attitude at the way in which they, at least, could recognize talent. “I don’t mind, perhaps in one of the more secluded spots?” Kaida suggested, all the while breathing as deeply as she dared without arousing suspicion, trying to see if she could pick up the scents of the other customers, be they human or otherwise.

Devin hadn’t been “normal” since before he had met Kaida- not since the hunters… He had managed to hide his break from well grounded sanity for a long while after joining the pack Kaida had been in, but he hadn’t been able to keep it up. When the pack had worked against them, he had let the mask drop and had well and truly show who he was and what he was capable of. After that, he hadn’t been able to put the mask back on. It had been completely shattered and there was no repairing it. He could put up a temporary façade when it was needed, but it was hard to keep it up for too long, just like he could control himself, but not nearly as long as Kaida could keep her control. She was indeed the saner of them and Devin was happy to let her be.
Devin breathed in deeply and looked around again, knowing that most would likely think it some odd little quirk that came up when he was thinking and considering his options. There were few that would actually realize that he was gathering scents, trying to identify who and what was there as he looked for the perfect table which, in the end, looked to be one tucked into a far corner. “I think I’ve just found the perfect spot.”

She had to believe that the man she had first met in Russia and fallen for hadn’t been a complete lie, nothing more than a mask. Kaida prided herself on being a master manipulation and the idea that perhaps she had been deceived was more than her ego could handle. The blond could accept that something had happened to him before he arrived which had hurt him beyond any chance of healing but she believed that part of his original personality had shone through, that it had been a mixture of the person before and the danger he was now which had drawn her to him and kept him with him even when she had discovered the true extent of his so called ‘crimes’ against hunters.
They deserved everything they got and more.
It was near impossible at the distance they were standing to pick out individual scents from the mixture she could sense, but the overriding scent Kaida was getting was one of mortality and decay. Of death creeping up to them with every breath they took, every second slipping away, never to return. Humans. Kaida had no time for things that lived for such a short period, little more than a flicker of a flame before it was forever extinguished.
“Oh I quite agree Dev,” Kaida remarked in approval, eyes following his to the table, liking the secluded spot immensely.

He had been trying to deceive no one but himself by wearing that mask, hoping in a way that by showing everyone else strength and sanity, he would truly regain them. That was before he had learned the real art of dealing with what the hunters had done to him, though. He supposed that there had been some sort of personality mixing that had taken place at some point, but taking revenge on the pack for what they had done had helped him a great deal- it seemed to have grounded him in a way. He still had his murderous tendencies, of course, but he did know how to be “normal” when it was necessary.
Every species had a certain scent, as did each individual. While the scents of the individuals mingled with each other and the smell of food to the point of being hard to pick out, there where enough humans around that their general scent was easy enough to catch. It made him hungry for more than food, but tonight wasn’t the night for that sort of hunger. At least, it wasn’t until they had some dinner.
When one of the waitresses- a dainty little brunette that probably would have been fun to make scream- came over to seat them, he requested the table he had pointed out to Kaida. As she led them towards their seats, Devin put the thought of torture out of his mind. There was plenty of time for that. Right now, it was time to enjoy having dinner with his mate.

The day they had taken such a delicious revenge upon her pack, those she had foolishly once called friends and family had opened Kaida’s eyes in more ways than one. She had finally seen them for what they truly were, weak, broken, in her way. And after that day Kaida suffered nothing and nobody to get in her way. It also gave the Russian her first real taste of power, the intense satisfaction of knowing she held the power of life and death over another living person and of course, that feeling, that incredible, almost indescribable rush that came when you finally extinguished the light of your victim. Without Devin leading her to those realisations, Kaida didn’t want to think where she would be in her life now.
Trapped perhaps, unsatisfied, not really knowing why she felt as she did, only that something was clawing at her insides, a hunger that couldn’t be filled with food, a hunger that had a dark name she wouldn’t have known without her mate. Kaida liked knowing it, her attention shifting subtly to the waitress, taking in her petite form and imagining putting that name against her face. Or rather watching Devin do just that, for she was sure he had spared at least a moment to consider hurting the delicate human. It would have surprised her if he had hadn’t but Kaida kept such thoughts to herself as they moved over to the table and settled themselves comfortably down, the blond even going so far as to offer the waitress a small and innocent smile of thanks.

Devin had no way of knowing if Kaida would have been happier had he never joined the pack, but it was something he didn’t think about often. There was no changing what had happened, so he saw no sense in dwelling on it. He didn’t know if he had done Kaida any favors by showing her his ways, but they had served him well and his mate seemed to enjoy herself, so he didn’t think there was anything to really regret where that was concerned. If he hand his family had been left alone, he never would have become what he now was and he was a little curious as to how things might have been, but again, there was no sense in dwelling on such things. The past couldn’t be changed, after all, and there was no way to know what might have been.
He should have felt trapped and unsatisfied- some tiny part of him was- but it was most often pushed aside and ignored in favor of far more interesting things. Like the waitress. As hard as he was trying to concentrate on just spending some time with his mate, it was hard to do when such a wonderful looking potential toy showed up. With each passing second, the desire to make her scream in agony grew harder to ignore. He wanted very badly to take her home and have his fun with her, but for now, he simply offered her a charming smile as she handed each of them a menu, getting a smile in return. He couldn’t help but wonder if she would be easy to lure back to his apartment. When she asked if they knew what they’d like to drink, he requested iced tea, still smiling. If he managed to win her over tonight, he just might have a future toy.

She smiled indulgently to herself as Devin began to lay the foundations for some fun of his own, for once not threatened by his apparent attention and interest in another woman. Kaida knew that Devin’s intrigue was nothing more than the urge to make the pretty little thing scream out in pain until her body was pushed beyond the limits a human could go and she stopped being entertaining, or even alive. Most of the time Kaida experienced a short flush of jealousy whenever her mate’s eyes landed upon someone else but this time she could afford to be generous and let the silly young woman think she was flirting with a man under the oblivious nose of his girlfriend.
It wasn’t Kaida after all who would suffer for this, not in the long run and so she made sure to keep her best innocent and naive expression visible on her face as she asked for a glass of sparkling water with no ice and a slice of lime. Quickly, the blond had gone through various possibilities of how to best help Devin ensnare the waitress, should he decide he wanted to play with her once they were done eating. She would have to remain friendly when the woman came back, but not too friendly and possibility a bit on the annoying side to crush any sense of guilt the human might feel for flirting with someone’s man. It was easier to ignore an apparent partnership if you could convince yourself the other person deserved it or that the guy needed to be rescued after all.

Devin flirted lightly with the waitress, giving veiled compliments all the while giving her his best, most charming smile. He knew perfectly well that Kaida knew what he was doing, which was more or less why he was doing it with her right there. Had she really been dense enough not to understand, he at very least would have thought twice about doing what he was. He didn’t know if he would have refrained or not, but it wasn’t something that he needed to worry about. She knew what he was doing as well as he did, so he continued, trying to work his way into the waitress’s good graces with glances and words, hoping to reel her in for later use.
When the waitress left to get their drinks, Devin gave a soft snort and a little shake of his head, lowering his voice to a level that he knew Kaida could pick up easily but no one else could overhear. “They’re too gullible sometimes. It’s all part of the fun, though, so I’m not complaining.” He gave her a grin and opened his menu, intending to have his dinner picked out by the time the waitress returned.

She enjoyed watching Devin ‘work’, watching him play the little humans with expect skill. Kaida enjoyed the heady scent of arousal from the human, the girl thinking she was special, that she was worth something because someone as strong and as handsome as her mate was conferring his gazes and his words upon her. It amused her to watch the play from the stands this time, to let it unfold in front of her as a mere spectator. Later, if the sequel was played as well, Kaida might ask Devin if she could play a small role, a cameo appearance to explain to the human how very wrong she had been to think she could try and take her Devin away.
Her pale pink lips stretched into an amused and gentle smile – lipstick colour chosen to try and convey innocence, the same sweetness which had lured the male human at the start of the night; had it really only been the start of the night? It had seemed somehow that much longer since Devin had ‘disposed’ of that male, his name always flittering away from Kaida’s mind. It was even possible that come the morning and the paper, without any photo of the man in the news she might not even recognize the sad story at all. “Naive little things, thinking the world is softer than it is. Breaking that illusion is… so wonderful to see you do.”

Devin always enjoyed seeing the proof that he could make humans feel so at ease around him, never realizing the danger that getting so comfortable around him could bring upon him. It was an important skill to have when doing what he had his mate did and sometimes it was nice to know that he wasn’t giving off some sort of creepy vibe that humans picked up on while he was trying to blend into the crowds. Knowing that they thought of him as someone they could be comfortable around always made it much more amusing when he shattered those perceptions in the biggest way he possibly could. If he decided to continue with the waitress at a later time- which he very likely would since he was already starting to get some ideas as to how to deal with her- he would gladly let Kaida come in and explain whatever she liked to the human. It was always amusing.
When he looked at her with fresh eyes, Devin could understand how a human male might think of her as sweet and innocent. She could pull both off extremely well and, if he hadn’t known better, he very well might have fallen for it himself. At Kaida’s words, Devin gave a quick grin that likely would have blown apart the waitress’s apparent comfort in his presence. “I’m glad you enjoy it. It’s always a fun thing to do.” He quickly wiped the cruel smile off his face, not wanting anyone else to have the opportunity to see it. It wouldn’t do for the waitress or anyone else who might come by to see it, after all. That would ruin all his fun.

Even at his most murderous, Kaida would never had labelled Devin as truly ‘creepy’. Powerful, dangerous, alluring, a bright light in the darkness, perhaps even scary to any outsider, but never creepy, not to Kaida at least. Of course, to outsiders, those who had learnt what lay under the glittering façade both presented to the world would no doubt consider Kaida just as creepy as her mate. So long as only came to that conclusion after it was too late, then they could think whatever it was they liked. The waitress might come to that same realisation if Devin brought her home to his ‘play’ area and Kaida relished the idea of helping to shatter that illusion.
The cruel smile sent a shiver down Kaida’s spine; a shiver of pleasure and delight, the blond werewolf looking forward to seeing that smile again and again, almost more than she looked forward to seeing the fear on their prey’s faces. The smile just reminded Kaida why she had fallen for her mate in the first place, the strength and promise that he had, something which she had seen only too clearly although the rest of her pack had appeared oblivious. As he schooled his expression into someone less exciting, Kaida did the same, both waiting for the waitress who was currently pouring their drinks behind the counter.

Devin really didn’t mind being creepy in the eyes of the playthings he took home with it. Quite the opposite, actually- he greatly enjoyed it, counting it among the things that told him that he was doing things right. After all, if they didn’t think he was creepy as he was cutting them up and breaking their bones, then he was doing something seriously wrong. Of course, they were always so busy screaming- and often begging- that they probably didn’t have their wits about them enough to actually think that much. It was probably restricted to something along the lines of ‘I don’t want to die. Please, don’t let me die’ or something else that was a complete waste of their last night alive.
He tended to think about the pack very little, the only good thing about them being that they had taken him in and given him the opportunity to meet Kaida. After that, he didn’t have anything good to say about any of them. Except his mate, of course, but he didn’t consider her one of them. She was so much more- so much better- than any of them ever could have been.
He saw the waitress finish pouring the drinks and start back towards them, her eyes glancing in his direction more than once. Good. That meant she was definitely interested and that meant that he really might have found himself someone to play with at a later time.

Really, they should take one good look at Devin’s ‘playroom’, a look at the determination in his eyes and realise then and there that they weren’t going to make it the next sunrise. Even the eternal optimistic had to realise that here was the immovable object and that they had no chance. Then again, optimists tended to equal utter morons in Kaida’s mind, so if they didn’t realise this was the last night they would ever see, wasting it in pointless begging then it was their own stupid fault. If they were smart enough in the first place, they should have stayed clear of Devin and herself.
Kaida lowered her eyes to the table in fake modesty as she noticed her mate’s reaction, clearly indicating that the waitress was heading back over. It wouldn’t do to distract either of them right now, not when the male opposite her was getting ready to play the silly little human like a beautiful instrument. She was looking forward to finding out what kind of plan he had in mind for her this time, and how he intended to really reel her in, beyond interested to helpless pawn. Even if they decided not to play with her in the end, catching her on the hook was the principle of the matter.
