There was no denying that she was grateful when Derrick stilled and it was all she could do not to literally sigh in relief. She knew that he was badly injured and she very desperately didn’t want him to injure himself more, especially since she was already worrying about how they were going to move him when the time came. There was no doubt that she would be able to get help from some of the others, but it was going to hurt him and she really didn’t know how she was going to stand that. She would find a way, of course, even if all she would be doing was holding back her emotions so they could move him without them having to worry about her as well, but she wasn’t going to like the thought of causing him more pain. However, getting her mate away from the burning building and those who had attacked the pack was something she was desperate to do, but she and Derrick were going to stay where they were as long as they could. He needed to rest while he could.
Stroking her mate’s hair gently, she studied the burning building for a moment, hoping to see more of their pack mates coming towards them, but finding herself disappointed. Looking back to Derrick, she found herself hoping that more would be joining them soon while at the same time being extremely grateful that her mate was still alive. If she lost him, that would be it. She would never be able to continue on because, quite simply, he was her everything.

Derrick wasn't even thinking about when they would need to move. As it was, he was having trouble comprehending where exactly he was and what was going on around him. All he knew for certain was that Kaleigh was nearby, her fingers brushing through his hair, and that she was all right. There was a part of him, subdued by the pain of his injuries and the heavy fog left over from his recent brush with unconsciousness, that hated being unaware and vulnerable, but that same part knew that his mate was no pushover, that even before they had left their birth pack she had known how to take care of herself. Kaleigh had not only risked her life to infiltrate a vampire stronghold to rescue him and come out alive and successful, but Derrick himself had trained her how to fight. Kaleigh could take care of them both, even if she shouldn't have to. That was supposed to be Derrick's job.
It was more difficult than it should have been to keep his eyes open, so for long stretches of time Derrick let them stay closed, though he fought with everything he had left to keep unconsciousness from taking hold again. It was bad enough that he was wounded and unable to fight; he refused to be unaware as well. That fight might not last long, he only had minimal reserves of strength at his disposal after the beating he had taken, but with his head rested on Kaleigh's legs and his mate's fingers repeatedly raking gently through his hair he would hold on as long as was possible.

Though she knew that she should really be attempting to help by at very least watching the building in order to spot anyone that might come out of it, Kaleigh was having a great deal of trouble pulling her attention away from her mate. She was constantly finding her gaze traveling to him, checking on him, wishing more than anything that she could trade places with him because she would have rather been injured herself rather than see him in such a state. It drove her insane that she couldn’t do anything for him, couldn’t make things better, that all she could actually do was sit there and hope that things didn’t go from awful to even worse. If the situation was to call for it, she would gladly join in a fight, perfectly confident that her training would see to it that she could help in such a thing. She had, after all, been trained by Derrick himself, and, as far as she was concerned, she couldn’t have been trained by anyone better. He had taught her everything she needed to know about handling herself in a fight and she would gladly take care of them both as often as need be without a second thought. She knew that her mate would always prefer to do that himself, seeing it as his duty since that was just how Derrick was, but she wanted to take care of him as much as he wanted to take care of her.
If she couldn’t trade places with him, then Kaleigh would have given anything to be able to lend her mate some of her strength, even if she could only just give him enough to keep him conscious. She knew he was struggling not to let the darkness reclaim him, she knew him more than well enough to be able to see that, and she wished that there was something- anything- she could have done to make it easier for him. She felt incredibly helpless right then, and that was a feeling she couldn’t stand.

Derrick believed, always had, with all his heart and soul, that it was his duty to protect his mate, much as it had been his father's to protect his mother. It was something of an outdated belief, it had been even at the time of his coming of age, but Derrick was a creature of habit and a passionately protective one; just because female werewolves were just as fierce and formidable as males, that didn't mean he could just let his guard down and leave Kaleigh to fend off attackers by herself. No, that was his place, his role in life. Failing in that personal mission would destroy him, losing Kaleigh would be the end of him, and though he knew that worked both ways and his death would irreparably damage his mate, he would rather be the one to fall. That had always been true, all their lives, and when he had taught her how to defend herself -- against her parents' wishes at that -- he had done so in order to ensure she could defend herself in those times -- rare though they might be -- when he was not by her side.
It would have been more sensible to slip back into the blackness, to let his body and his mind rest and recover from the brutal -- if brief -- battle, but he couldn't just let himself slip away again. Derrick had to stay with his mate, even if he was in no fit condition to protect her now if danger came barrelling towards them. It was better to be on the very edge of unconsciousness and know that she was okay than drift into unawareness and lose track of events -- and more importantly, Kaleigh's health -- altogether. It wasn't the sensible thing to do, but Derrick was beyond caring at that point.

Regina stared up at Mateo, someone she had always respected -- he was intimidating in his silence and his economy of words but in a way that made her feel safe having him as a member of the pack fighters. not right now though, not standing in the sweltering dark with her home and everything she held dear within it burning up. "Mikhail's in there," she said, her voice strangled. "I told him-- i promised him that as long as he was with us he didn't have to worry about somethign like this happening." She shook her head, wiping hair from her forehead, traying to rattle her thoughts into some kind of order where she could make them comprehensible to others when she said them. It didn't seem possible though. She had told Mikhail everything would be okay, sort of taken him under her wing a bit; he was so quiet and shy and she didn't like it when new wolves to the pack isolated themselves too much, and she'd promised him, sworn to him everything would be fine.
"Mateo, he'll die if someone doesn't go in there for him. I can do it. I can make it." There was confidence in her words that she did not often display, confidence in her ability to do something serious, something with real weight to it. She could do this and the sharp set of her jaw said she was going to whether he liked it or not. Regina was fairly sure she could outrun the fighter if she had to.

Regina's voice carried and it was easy enough for Gabriel to pick up on the words being exchanged between the small French female and the fighter who stood before her. There was something about the look in Regina's eyes, the pained yet determined quality to her voice that made Gabriel's pulse quicken, his heart beating harder as he put two and two together and realised what might happen in the very near future if they didn't talk her down.
So he stepped away from Calista, touching one hand to her arm just long enough to communicate to her that he wasn't going far before he strode towards his fellow fighter and the she-wolf he was trying to dissuade. "Regina," Gabriel said as he neared the pair, hoping to draw her focus to him and take it away from whatever she was planning to do. "The building is coming down. The important thing for us to do is stay together." As pack wolves that came naturally, it was instinctive. What hurt the most was understanding her desire and not being able to do anything about it. "If we separate now, even if it is to go back for the others, we might lose someone else." And they had already lost people. Too many people.

There was no way Charlotte could miss the loss of one of their own. They had already lost Heather, in the most graphic and horrific way possible, and Charlotte thought she almost heard Samson's last breath slip out of him. Her chest tightened horribly, the air lodged in her throat, she thought she might choke. And then Imogen started crying.
It was a welcome distraction even in its heartbreaking cruelty, seeing the grief and dismay on Imogen's face was almost too much to bear but it gave Charlotte something to focus on. Something she could try and fix. Shuffling herself closer to the other she-wolf she set one hand on her arm, rubbing it up and down in as much of a comforting action as she could manage with her arms full.
It was at that moment that Figaro realised something was wrong with someone close to her and managed to wriggle her way out of Charlotte's grasp. The historian almost gave in to the momentary flash of panic that took hold of her before she realised the cat wasn't making a break for freedom in order to search for shelter but was in fact worming her way onto what little she could access of Imogen's lap, trying to rub her soft head against the upset she-wolf's arm and wrist, whatever she could reach. Charlotte almost burst into tears herself then. It was all she could do to hold them back.

It was chaos when they landed, debris and smoke polluting the night air as Vanessa struggled to keep her feet. She heard her packmates land on either side of her and someone gave a shout - "Run!"
She didn't have to be told twice.
Even as the racket of shattering glass and tearing wood rumbled from the dying building, they bolted through the madness, trying to get as far away as possible. Vanessa coughed, her lungs still trying to force out the soot that they had taken in. Her eyes watered, her legs burned, but she couldn't stop running. They had to get away - they had to find what was left of their pack. There was no time to rest.

It took nearly a full minute for her to realize that Charlotte had moved to her side. The touch of the other she-wolf's hand didn't pull her away from the sight of Samson's body. It was only when Figaro bumped her little head against Imogen's arm that she finally snapped out of it. She blinked down at the tiny feline, hazel eyes blearly with tears, before she lifted a hand to stroke over Figaro's back.
"They're killing us," Imogen whispered. "It's like they want to wipe us out completely."
There was another almighty crash from their home. The pink-haired she-wolf jumped something awful, very nearly screaming aloud. There was no telling how many of their pack were still trapped inside, how many fighters were battling the enemy wolves; no telling how many more would end up like Samson.

CONTINUED FROM: Hallways with Kyla, Dane and Ingrid.
Kiernan had stood guard as Ingrid and Dane followed Kyla out of the window, neither fighter landing as neatly as they normally would have but with their injuries it was a miracle they hadn't already collapsed, he'd followed quickly after the others not wanting to spend a second longer than he had to in the building that was starting to give in to the fire that was consuming it from the inside out. He straightened up and looked over at those who had already made it out of the pack home, some seemed to have escaped injury but as he looked round he saw that not everyone had been so lucky. He grimaced as he saw a body that wasn't easily identifiable at first, Heather. He turned his attention back to the others with him and put his arm around Dane to help support him again.
"Come on," he said as he began to move towards the others in the parking lot helping Dane along slowly. His eyes scanned over the group there searching for Vanessa and the others she had been with when he'd last seen her. He felt relief washed over him when he saw Cassius and Vanessa running from one of the other side streets to join the group. His own injuries were starting to sap his strength as he took in a lungful of air that wasn't quite as heavy with smoke as the air in the building had been.

It ought to have hurt, that drop. It concerned Ingrid that it didn't; she couldn't feel much of anything any more, only the dull throbbing of her nerves, a pulsing sensation passing through her with each beat of her heart but the impact when she followed Kyla's instructions and leapt from the window didn't register. Part of her mind was sinking, she could feel it disappearing beneath a dark surface. It was nice to have clear instructions, she seemed to think. To have Kyla's blunt and direct orders to follow. It was so much easier when she was being told what to do, where to go. Everything that was Ingrid rebelled against the comfortable sensation of being a pawn. Ingrid was no longer that person. Ingrid Reiter, that was who she was, That was who she was and no one could take it from her.
Seeing the twisted, mangled body of Heather, the prone for of Samson, she felt nauseated. Her hands were shaking. The burns red and angry and searing at her now that they were out of the hotel and she closed her eyes to try and focus on that and not the other thing, the false memories, the bits of her that had been faked and punched together by others. Ingrid Reiter. That was who she was.

One minute they were inside the hotel, surrounded by heat and smoke and splintering wood and groaning support beams, and the next they were on the ground. Dane hadn't registered jumping, hadn't really taken in that they were leaving the Four Seasons for the last time, only that he was no longer inside the building but outside of it, somehow he'd landed and done so without causing himself further injury, no doubt thanks in no small part to Kyla's assistance. He was still on his knees when he came to his senses enough to register his surroundings and who was with him but then Kiernan was helping him up again and that awareness dimmed and failed once more.
It was getting progressively more difficult to hold the blackness at bay, to remember why it was so important to keep it from doing so. Everything hurt, a throbbing and gnawing kind of ache that was sapping what little energy he had left, he was losing the fight and couldn't even muster the strength to care. He had done his part in defending their home and its occupants, hadn't he? That was when he remembered Samantha, how quickly the life had slipped out of her, how he'd failed to help her. Save her. Dane didn't see the dead bodies in the parking lot, didn't hear the sobbing coming from somewhere nearby, didn't register much of anything as he slumped against Kiernan completely and gave up on trying to keep the darkness at bay. He didn't have it in him to fight any longer.

Kiernan didn't dwell on the fact that he wouldn't enter the Four Seasons again, that their home was now gone and that not all of them had made it out alive. If he stopped to think about all of that he wouldn't be able to defend the group if any of the intruders decided to attack the group gathered in the parking lot and he'd never forgive himself if someone died because he was too busy wallowing over the fact that they didn't have a home anymore. There were more important things to worry about at the moment and he'd focus on them until someone told him he didn't need to anymore.
He looked over to Kyla and Ingrid to check that they were also making their way to join the others, now that they were outside he could really see just how bad they all looked. None of them had escaped without injury and Dane and Ingrid were a lot worse off than either Kiernan or Kyla. As they moved closer to the others Kiernan felt Dane slump against him more, a quick look towards the other male told him that he had lost his battle with consciousness, he shifted his grip on the other fighter to support him completely so that he wouldn't fall. He made it close enough to the group to be able to lower Dane down to the ground so that if they needed to move fast he could be picked up and moved before looking back to Kyla to see how Ingrid was faring.

It didn't matter in the least to Kyla that the hotel was literally crumbling, coming apart before their eyes -- or at least that would have been the case if she'd been looking at the building -- and bringing everything they'd built up over the years in the way of personal possessions down with it. Kyla wasn't the sort of person who got attached to things, as it happened she was wearing everything she cared about, all the other various items could be replaced. It was her life and the lives of the others in the pack that were truly important. They would find another place to call home. They would start again. In her mind it was as simple as that.
As soon as Ingrid lost consciousness Kyla registered it, the dip in the other female's weight, her body slumping closer to the ground. Without missing a beat she all but carried the other she-wolf over to the group -- it seemed so small, where was everyone else? -- that had gathered towards the edge of the lot. Carefully she lowered Ingrid to the ground close to where Kiernan had set Dane but she didn't go far, just turned her back to the street and focused her gaze on the broken building as she crouched, setting one hand down to the ground, fingers against concrete, to support herself. The adrenaline was wavering, trickling out of her system now that the fighting had come to an end, and it wouldn't be long before her own injuries took their toll. Until then she would stand guard, continue to do her duty as one of the pack fighters, as long as it was required of her to do so.

It could have been a more graceful landing but Lee was half blinded by smoke and coughing up his lungs and he had to catch himself with one hand on the ground. Stumbling to his feet he wiped at his eyes. They were watering. A ways ahead of him and Casey he could see Regina and it looked like she was arguing with Mateo and Gabriel, one of her fencing swords was grasped in her tiny hand and she looked a mess. More of a mess than Lee had ever seen her.
Then it struck him what else was odd about the scene before him, the one he was lurching towards on unsteady feet. Krysti wasn't with her. Lee cast his eyes about wildly, looking for the familiar girl in the crowd but she wasn't, not awake, unconscious or -- thank fucking god -- one of the bodies he could see.
"Case," he coughed, groping for the fighter's arm. "Where's Krysti? She's not-- she's not here, man."
