Personality: Her mother was always keen on Kath being a feminine housewife but right from the words "first steps" it was obvious that she would not be. She has always been a little bit rough and tumble, willing to get her hands dirty to get what she wants and more than capable of keeping up with 'the boys'. She and her younger brother fought every chance they got, over the remote, over the last slice of pizza and usually Kath won.
It was this tomboy, scrappy nature that landed her in the police force, a choice that her younger brother Marcus followed soon after. As a lot of cops do she thinks it important to keep work and home separate but where her brother succeeds, Kath fails. Miserably. She is often working a case late into the night even when she's at home and not down at the precinct. She does have a sense of humour, sarcastic wit and deadpan aides seem to be her staple and when she wants to be Katherine can be quite scathing and direct.
She is very much one of the guys, her femininity something that she is very comfortable with and doesn't let get in the way but knows at the same time that it might get in the way of others seeing her as an equal. She tries in every way she can to prove that is far from the case.
She wants to appear hard as nails and her tenacity and drive make her one of the hardest working and most successful female Homicide Detectives in her precinct. Not that she allows herself time to enjoy her own success.
Weaknesses: Katherine cannot fully raise her left arm above her shoulder after she took a nasty spill while chasing a suspect and broke her collar bone. After it healed she found that raising and rotating that arm was practically impossible due to the way the muscles have healed. She can get it at about a 145degree angle before she has to stop.
Emotionally or mentally she doesn't really know how to relax. She takes work home with her, it keeps her up at night on occasion and her affinity for 'getting into the head' of criminals can leave her disturbed to a mild degree. She is also pretty inseparable from her little brother, though she is fairly stoic in voicing her 'dislike' of him. They tease and torment each other but if either of them were in trouble the other would be there in a heartbeat, she sees herself as his protector and always has an eye and an ear out for him.
Abilities: She has an innate ability for lateral thinking, able to get into the mind of her suspects and it makes her a great cop. She is an excellent shot when she has to use her weapon which more often than not she would prefer not to do and she also has extensive high speed chase training, field rated for just such a thing.
Despite her mother's constant attempts to immerse Kath in dance and music as a child, she never too to either realms of creativity and her tap shoes and clarinet have done nothing but collect dust since she was given them. She prefers poker night and the shooting range in what spare time she allows herself.
Weapons: Kath has a Police issued Beretta that she wears in a hip holster beneath her jacket along with her badge and cuffs. She also keeps an almost identical one [black whereas her police issued weapon is grey] in her bedroom for personal safety.

Prized Possessions: Not that she would call it 'prized' Kath has grown fond of Frank, her brother's long haired, rather fat cat whom he entrusted to his sister and neglected to retrieve. She denies caring at all about the creature. She has a hardback copy of "The Complete Tales of Beatrix Potter" which she kind of loves.

Home(s): An apartment on Cole's side of town.
History: Katherine's family was completely average and she holds many fond memories of growing up in New York State with her younger brother, Marcus and various cousins, aunts and uncles around. She is and always has been a Daddy's girl and the male influences in her life have certainly been a large factor in her ending up in a largely male orientated job.
The whole family moved down to Los Angeles to be near Kath's grandmother on her Father's side after his health started to decline, the family has always been almost suffocating in its closeness, but Katherine doesn't seem to mind as much as Marcus does.
It was in Los Angeles that Kath met her husband, Gregory Palmer. They were married for three years before either of them realised what a horrible mistake they had made. In marrying Katherine he had also married the Force and her family and Gregory found the Rivera's just as suffocating as Marcus did, without the benefit of being without a choice in sticking with them. He chose to effectively end the marriage without telling his wife and moved out of their home immediately.
Katherine took it rather well and currently she and her husband, complete with a new girlfriend already, are in the final stages of a divorce, dividing their possessions etcetera. Kathy's main task seems to be in keeping her brother from running into her "scum-bag excuse for a husband" as whenever they do me they seem to come to blows or at least very close.
She is living alone, save for her brother's overweight, over-lazy cat, focussing harder than ever on her job and managing to convince everyone that she's doing better than she actually is.
