Name: Ornella Lucia Margulies
Nicknames: Nell or Nellie
Race: Human
Occupation: Volunteer nurse at St. Benedict’s and part-time waitress, when she really needs the money.
Gender: Female
Skin Color: Caramel-toned
Age: 23
Clothing: Nell prefers sensibility and comfort to flash – she’s a jeans and t-shirt kind of girl – but she does like to look nice, at least. She likes warm colors, though her favorite is purple, and prefers sneakers to high heels or boots. Naturally, she wears scrubs at the hospital. Should the weather call for it, she also owns a thigh-length, forest green cloth duster.

Body Modifications: A small birthmark on her abdomen, but nothing much else.
Hair
Length: Fairly long, it hangs just below her shoulders, and fairly evenly all around.

Personality: Nell is, and almost always has been, a very calming and mothering person, even before the birth of her son. She is a loyal and compassionate friend, always ready with a shoulder to cry on or, if need be, some comfort food; anything to help the people she cares about. However, Nell isn’t a pushover. There is a surprisingly sharp tongue set in her mouth that, while normally dormant, will lash out, but only in jest, for the most part.
An emotional person, Nell often has trouble setting aside her feelings on the job. Suffering has always upset her, but she tries to keep her head together in a situation, and more often than not, she succeeds. A grave betrayal left Nell with an instinctual distrust of most men; she isn’t bitter, just wary. Dr. Wilder seems to be one of the only men at St. Ben’s whom she trusts, and she considers him a good friend, if only because her son adores the young doctor.
And her son…Jared – or ‘Cub’ as he’s called around the ER - her life. There is nothing that Nell would not do for her son, despite the fact that his birth wasn’t exactly well-received by her family. She is fiercely protective of her ‘cub,’ and spoils him whenever the opportunity arises. However, the little tyke can’t get away with everything; the last thing Nell’s boy will ever grow up to be is a brat. His infancy was a rocky time for her, but the hardships have only made Nell stronger, more determined to have the best for Jared and to ‘raise him up proper.’
Weaknesses: Nell is a mortal woman, and can be injured or killed, just like most of the patients she’s seen at the hospital. Her little boy could easily be used against her; he is her flesh and blood. Nellie would lay down her life for Jared without question or hesitation – she would fight and kill to protect her son, like a she-wolf would her brood. It is that simple.
Abilities: Nell is quite knowledgeable in first aid and the human anatomy, both somewhat required, given her profession. She cooks well enough that some of the staff around St. Ben’s has been known to show up at her doorstep from time to time in hopes of catching leftovers or maybe even a full meal; Nell loves company, so she doesn’t mind. She speaks some French and Italian, and can interpret American Sign Language fairly well. Nell also has a powerful singing voice, something that she is oddly shy about, and she plays a little piano, but nothing terribly impressive. Nell isn’t much of a fighter, but she knows enough to be able to defend herself, or more importantly, her child.
Weapons: A can of pepper spray
Prized Possessions: Her hospital ID, the posey ring she always wears and, not surprisingly, her three-year-old son, Jared Pietro Marguiles.
Jared Pietro Margulies
Home(s): A small apartment on Cole’s half of L.A.
History: Nellie was born in a small, southern California town to Daren and Lucia Margulies. Nell was an only child, but she was far from spoiled. Her parents were strict, but never overbearing; they wanted their daughter to be raised right. Nellie’s mother was a nurse at the local hospital, and when Nell began to show interest in following in her mother’s footsteps, her parents were ecstatic.
Nell took to med school like a duck to water, and she would have been top of her class at UCLA, the youngest, too, which was quite a feat. When she first met Jason, they were both sure that it was meant to be. He was a good man; a music major, but still smart, witty, and he at least tried to be totally faithful. They had planned to wait until marriage, but things didn’t exactly go according to plan. Jason discovered that he was going to be a father much sooner than he had intended and he panicked. Packed up and left.
Nell didn’t know what to do. She couldn’t go home, couldn’t shame her parents like that. Los Angeles offered her anonymity, at least. Jared was born and all Nell saw were his father’s eyes staring right through her; she got herself out of the hospital as fast as humanly possible. She wasn’t sure what compelled her to go to the Church, but she would have left Jared on the steps, had he not started wailing for her; the sound broke Nellie’s heart. She had needed Jason, and he’d abandoned her, but she wasn’t about to do the same to her child.
Work was difficult for awhile, but when she had saved enough, she was able to by a comfortable apartment and provide little Cub with his basic needs and the occasional treat. She even managed to at least find volunteer work at St. Ben’s with the education she received. Nell does her best with what she’s been given, and she knows that is all she can do.
