Idly twirling one of her ‘streaked’ lengths of hair around her index finger, her green-grey eyes rarely left the tidy print of the book held in her other hand. She was more or less curled up in one of the library’s lounge chairs, making sure to keep her boots off the material so she didn’t have some power-crazy librarian come over and ‘tut’ at her… she hated it when they did that. The sound was like a gnat buzzing down her ear. The very toes of her footwear were propped against the edge of the table between herself and the other female sitting comfortable in the lounge; the book rested slightly against her angled legs.
From where she sat, she could smell the others, as well as hear them moving around, protective of the older female wolf as ever; she could smell Devon in particular not far behind her, browsing through a rack of magazines at the lounge occupants’ disposal, and she saw one of the pack’s other females loitering around the stacks outside the always-open door. There were one or two more in the building’s main body, but she couldn’t see them directly from where she sat.
Cassidy Blake summoned her voice, drawing in a breath before she did, saying quite calmly, “Y’know, this book is actually pretty good. Most werewolf novels make me wanna laugh, but this one? Not so much.” Kelley Armstrong, she had decided, was another author to go down on her ‘To Meet’ list…

Heidi was entrenched in one of the library's esoteric history books, the reference books that she couldn't remove from the premises despite her best pleas, but glanced up at Cassidy's voice. "Oh? Well, I'm glad there's at least one writer out there doing justice to the species." She smiled. "Probably a lot more entertaining than what I'm reading, but I'm determined to find the link between the Taylor lineage and the client in Oregon."

“Fun?” The ‘polite sarcasm’ in Cassidy’s voice — something that was usually only granted to Heidi, and the other pack leaders — was evident, and she gave a cheeky, youthful smirk as the Beta Female glanced in her direction, before eyeing the book again. She’d managed to motor her way through six chapters already during their most recent visit to the building, and she already planned to take it back to The Hyperion with her when they headed home later.
“Of course… it’s kinda anal if I wanna pick out the things that are wrong with this book, right?” She glanced up again, continuing as she did so, “Like, she doesn’t really know, so I shouldn’t pick.” Another cheeky smile flittered across her face.

"Well, that's very likely true. Perhaps sometime you can write the definitive lycanthrope novel," Heidi suggested, with a slightly teasing smile. "Though -- if you do -- make me look good, all right? Don't make me a boring historian like I really am." She grinned wolfishly.

“You’ve got a deal,” Cassidy replied brightly, smiling over the top of the book at the other woman. Glancing back down at the words, she realised what Heidi had just said in regards to herself, and then tore her eyes from the novel again.
“I don’t think you’re boring,” she clarified honestly. Granted, Cassidy didn’t always know what it was that Heidi was working on, even if she was told, but that didn’t mean she found the older wolf dull or anything similar, in a negative sense. Most of the time, it just made her wish she had the patience and understanding for such a career.

"Thank you, dear, I appreciate that," said the Beta with a chuckle. She frowned at the page she was studying, and sat up to make some notes in her pocket notebook, muttering to herself.
"What time is it?" she asked a few minutes later, glancing at her watch. "Wow, we've been here for hours...are you hungry? I just realized I skipped lunch."

Cassidy’s own eyes turned to her wrist, where her watch was pointed in to face her, as opposed to how it should normally be worn. “Huh… time flies,” she muttered under her breath, before responding to Heidi, with Devon leaning over her shoulder to see the book, after she had praised it.
Sleaze. Devon was cute, but not cute enough for her to just let him sneak a peek down her top… good thing she was wearing a turtleneck.
“I could eat a cow,” she quipped, and then, after flicking the book up in her hand to playfully whap Devon in the forehead with it lightly, rephrased, “I mean… I could go for a cheeseburger.” Cassidy grinned disarmingly.

"That sounds like an excellent idea," Heidi said approvingly. "Tell you what -- you round up the rest of the crew, and we'll stop for takeout on the way home. Maybe Cole and Steven are hungry too, we can take them something." Glancing at her pile of books, she added, a bit ruefully, "I'll just put these on the reshelving cart."

The younger female glanced at Heidi as she mentioned the cart, saying as she did so, “Sucks that you can’t take them with us.” She slipped a bookmark that she often carried in her pocket when they visited the library into the book, and after pulling it away from Devon again, stood from her chair. “I’ll help.” Holding the book in her right hand, she helped Heidi put away the others, and then decided she wasn’t in the mood to play ‘fetch’.
“Hey, wanna make yourself useful?” She had turned to Devon almost flirtatiously, but the glint in her eyes made it clear she was being anything but. “Meet us at the door. You can play sheepdog on the way.” Offering him one of her best smiles, she laughed when he shook his head with a smirking grumble, and headed out of the room to do as she’d said.
“Males…” she sighed in a feigned-exasperated manner.

Ten minutes later, Heidi counted heads at the door. Satisfied that all four of the younger wolves were present and accounted for, she led the way out into the smoldering city, sniffing discreetly at the air for any sort of trouble. "So we'll go get a couple sacks of burgers and head back the Hyperion," she told them. "Stay together." It didn't really need to be said, but she was protective of the brood -- as was her right as well as her responsibility.
