"Ready, Billie?"
The singer flashed an over the shoulder grin to the man behind her. "Born ready, Brucie."
Bruce only chuckled at her antics. "Of course," he murmured. And then, he was in stage manager mode, barking a quick order into his headset before he flashed Billie a grin. "Knock 'em dead, kid."
Billie winked and, after adjusting the little red sheath of a dress she had chosen, sauntered out onto the stage. "Evenin', folks," she greeted amiably once she'd picked up the mic. "I'll be adding to our lovely little jazz combo tonight, if y'all don't mind." Pause for a smattering of applause and a few whistles that made her laugh. "All right -- good crowd tonight. Let's kick things off, then..."

Chris looked down at her as Sarah spoke to him, and then followed her gaze again. Oh for cryin’ out… And then he told himself to calm down. It was up to the detective where he roamed, and it was none of his business. His fresh beer arrived just in time though, and he paid the bartender quietly.
He noticed the grin Miles threw at him, but took the higher ground, and didn’t return it. Mark stopped laughing at Ray, and glanced to Chris, who gave a subtle shake of his head and a shrug; ‘don’t ask’. The other tall man returned the shrug, and ordered himself and Kevin a new drink. Ray had obviously had enough, so Mark ordered him a bottle of water instead of anything alcoholic.
“Hope you didn’t leave Denny’s wallet in his pocket,” Chris remarked even as the singer for the evening took to the stage, his statement aimed at Miles. “If you did, it won’t be there for long.” Onyx was lively, and could be a friendly enough place, but it had its fair share of lowlifes.

"Could say the same thing to you, Miles," Sarah commented, in response to his greeting. "Didn't think a dance club was your cup of tea. My, she's pretty," she added, watching the stage. "And what a voice! I don't think I've been here when she was singing before, maybe she's new."
She finished her brandy -- her glass was never very big. "Ah -- oh, crumbs. Next time the bartender moves in our direction, get me a water, somebody. It's warm in here."

When it came to getting drinks in the Onyx, it was a dog-eat-dog situation. When the fresh drinks for the Gunmen were delivered, Mark gave Ray his bottle of water. Since Miles had stepped in and ordered Sarah a water, he didn’t bother keeping the first tender waiting; the young man rushed off to deal with the next thirsty customer.
“You call bar peanuts good food?” Chris couldn’t help but smirk. “To each their own.” He swigged his beer. Chris would have leaned back against the bar a little more, but he was tentative about the level of contact he had with it as it was. Who knew how often it was cleaned down? And he was actually rather fond of the shirt he was wearing. He didn’t often particularly care about his attire, especially when he worked in such a potentially dangerous field, but he had the odd piece of clothing that he wanted to keep in good condition.

"Oh, thanks." Sarah accepted the water with a smile for him. "Yeah, actually -- just before you came over, I was telling the guys here that I'd probably be leaving them soon to take the floor for a bit. These are Tyler's buddies," she added, introducing the Gunmen. "Kevin, Mark, and Ray. This is Miles, he's a detective at the station." The female sergeant sipped her water, tapping her fingers on the bar in time with the music.

Well, that was unexpected. To say the least. Sarah would never have expected Miles to invite her to dance -- or to dance, himself, at all. But at least with Miles, Sarah was more or less certain she understood where he was coming from, and could be reasonably sure that he wouldn't try anything stupid...particularly with her "watchdog" on duty.
"Oh, well, why not." She put her water on the bar next to Chris's, so he could keep an eye on it for her, before accepting the proffered hand.

Evidently Miles wasn't much better at dancing than Chris. Sarah merely smiled, keeping the knowledge of her partner's unease on a dance floor to herself. "No promises," she teased, even as she herself settled into a rhythm. She kept it low-key, not wanting to look like a showoff, occasionally glancing to the others to make sure Chris wasn't getting too bored.

Marissa had been distracted by her admiring; the tall, dark-haired man at the bar had changed his demeanour quickly at the arrival of a shorter, slightly younger individual. The newer arrival had since left the bar with the woman of the group, presumably taking her to dance. And the object of her interest didn’t look too happy about that. She couldn’t help but smile, intrigued; what was their relationship? What made him so displeased about this new arrival? So many questions, and so few answers…
And so, she hadn’t caught the approach of the stranger until he was practically standing beside her. Her green eyes lifted, albeit reluctantly, abandoning her view of the bar. She looked up, into the face of… a vampire. A much older one than herself, if her senses weren’t lying to her.
Subtly intrigued, she lifted a brow, cocking her head a fraction. “Can I help you?”

As Sarah and Miles headed off to the dance floor, Chris turned his back on it. He wasn’t trying to look irritated about it, but that was just how he seemed to be whenever Miles was in the vicinity.
“Okay,” Mark began, leaning on the bar with his arms crossed, mimicking his taller friend, “so is this bad blood between you and this detective guy, or something I’m not catching?”
Chris’ green eyes turned to Mark. “He’s an ass.” He swigged his beer.
Mark paused, and then nodded. “Fair enough.” He downed the shot he’d ordered to precede his next drink, and turned to lean his back against the bar, bottle in hand. Chris glanced to his friend beside him, then to Kevin on his other side, and then proceeded to watch the reflections of the people around him in the mirror that lined the back of the bar.

"Aw, you're not that bad," Sarah called to Miles over the music. Not the best dance partner she'd ever had, certainly, but not horrid either.
Instinctively she glanced back at the bar. Mark gave her a little wave; Chris, she saw, had his back to the dance floor. Oh, I suppose he's not overly thrilled that I'm out here with Miles. Shepherd, I adore you, but I'm allowed out on my own sometimes.
All the same, however, she felt guilty for abandoning him. She'd have to make sure Miles understood, if the subject came up, that she would be leaving with Chris; her mother always taught her that except in unusual circumstances, a lady should leave with the gentleman who brought her.

“Hmmm…” Marissa’s eyes narrowed, thinking it over as she studied the male from her seat. Not a bad specimen, as male vampires went, she had to agree. That didn’t mean she’d lost interest in the human at the bar though, who had turned his back on the dance floor now.
“And what sort of help would you be looking for?” she asked of him, keeping her voice at its natural level, knowing he would hear her. She hated to unnecessarily raise her tone. It was such a waste.

Sarah was laughing as the song ended. "That was actually pretty good," she assured Miles. "Thanks for that....I think I need more water now, though."
They ambled back to the bar, and she picked up her bottle, offering Chris (who still, to her trained eyes, looked faintly agitated) a reassuring little grin. "Everyone having a good time?" she asked the group in general.

It was Mark who answered Sarah, the voice of the group whenever Chris wasn’t particularly up for the job, for whatever reason. “Oh, you know this place; never a dull moment.” He offered the redheaded sergeant a smirk, even as Miles saw fit to excuse himself. “Nice meeting you,” Mark put in, along with a nod from Kevin. Ray was having trouble paying attention.
Chris, for his part, glanced back at Sarah to show her he wasn’t annoyed with her at all. She could dance with whoever she wanted. It was simply the fact that Miles seemed to show up everywhere, even in a social situation, as of late. Chris was just… tired of him. The detective could be a draining presence, after all.

The new vampire was… an odd one, to say the least. Yes, he was definitely older than her, but Marissa had met those with a stronger aura. He was impressive, but her sire had been even more so. And not simply because most vampires found themselves fascinated or infatuated with their sires, either. He’d been powerful… before his demise.
“Well, before I even offer to help you,” she said, rising gracefully from her seat, “you’re going to have to give me just a little hint of what it is you need… ‘help’ with.” She smirked, a little coldly, but amused. Her glass was empty, and she needed a refill, but her appetite for simple alcohol had waned. She wasn’t in the mood for anything cold.
She followed his gaze. Ah… he’d noticed her point of interest. She wasn’t particularly intrigued by what he thought of the human male, but she found it entertaining that he’d latched onto the sight as well.

"Later, Miles." Sarah flashed him a smile before taking another pull from her water bottle. Exchanging glances with Chris, she gave him a little nudge -- an affectionate 'hi, how are you' kind of gesture. "You look a little tired, Sheps...if you decide you want out, let me know." She didn't really care when they left, truthfully; the Onyx was a bit tiresome after a while. And she did feel a little bad for 'ditching' her partner in favor of Miles.
