He’d finished his most recent beer by this point, and had resorted to toying with the bottle, but he stopped when Sarah addressed him, as usual, giving her his full attention. Of course, the nudge assured he gave her that much. As if there was any doubt…
“Tired?” Chris shook his head. “Not really.” He glanced at the clock above the bar. “It’s early yet.” They had to be at work in the morning, but he doubted the moon had even fully risen yet. They had plenty of time. “Why? Had enough?” He asked the question casually, but with a hint of concern; as always, he was putting her well-being before his own.

"Oh, I'm more or less impartial," Sarah replied truthfully. "But I know this isn't exactly your favorite place in the world. And I know you get sick of the atmosphere sooner than I do. Though we can't fault the company," she added, lifting her water bottle in the direction of their three friends with a smile.

He shrugged. Mark and Kevin were discussing possibly taking Ray home before the rather intoxicated man fell off his stool… again. Chris chuckled. “There is that.” He glanced towards the two who hadn’t consumed more than their limit, noting with a smile that they were close to laughing as they struggled to help Ray to his feet once more. “I sometimes wonder if I’m the brains in this party.”
Chris couldn’t help a fresh smirk after saying that. When it came to his group of friends, it could be said that he was the one who thought things through, but they were all equally ridiculous in their own ways. He supposed it was part of what made them friends.

Marissa sighed. This older vampire was… confusing; was he trying to sound that way? He acted as if he wasn’t interested one minute, and then fascinated the next. It was going to get tiresome very quickly.
When he said he had a question for her, one of her brows quirked neatly up at an angle. She looked up at him, but only in the way a shorter person would, not with any particular respect. He hadn’t earned it yet, and for Marissa, that was key. She usually got bored with people far too quickly for them to win it from her, and this older male was no exception.
And then he actually asked. Marissa could have laughed, had that been her way… but it wasn’t. She wasn’t that obvious with her reactions, unless she was feeling overly playful. She set down the empty glass she had been holding, saying as she did so, “And if I said yes, then what would your reaction be?” Would he realise she was a vampire, or would he tell her about the new steakhouse on the corner of Fifth?

Sarah laughed, and nudged him again. "Hon, I could've told you that," she teased, grinning at the other three.
She watched them, as Mark and Kevin struggled valiantly with the inebriated Ray. Her friend Erica had met the Lone Gunmen on one occasion, and was rather attracted to Mark. Sarah could appreciate that; Mark was easy on the eyes and a genuinely nice person. Ray was....Ray. And Kevin was cute, if quiet.
As much to tease her partner as anything else, once she was reasonably sure the three were out of earshot, she remarked to Chris, "Think Kevin'd have a coronary if I asked him to go out sometime?"

Well, at least she had agreed, instead of shooting him down and rewarding Mark with that title. She’d done it before.
As his three friends tumbled off to the parking lot, after giving the two sergeants mumbled parting acknowledgements, Chris turned his head to Sarah. “Kevin? I think Kevin would just wonder how much I’d bribed you.” He wished he hadn’t finished his beer, before realising he actually really didn’t want another one. He pushed his bottle across the bar lightly, so it wouldn’t topple, to get it away from him.
“He’s shy, after all.” Chris shrugged. “Besides… he’s Kevin.”

She ruffled his hair. "I know. It was just a passing thought. Besides, if I went out with one of your pals, there's a faint chance you might actually approve of the date."
It was no secret between the duo that Chris rarely approved of anyone Sarah dated. While this was chiefly flattering, and touching -- his contention was that she had not yet found anyone he considered good enough for her -- it was also ever so slightly bothersome. She sometimes had her doubts that she ever would meet anyone her tall partner deemed 'good enough.' But it was also no real secret that, if she met with an instance where Sarah had to choose between Chris's friendship and her relationship with some other man, there was no contest; she wouldn't even need to think about it.
For that reason, she concluded, it might be better if she didn't even consider dating any of the Lone Gunmen. They were Chris's only really close buddies, herself excepted, and she didn't want to do anything to screw that up for him.
"Well, no matter," she said out loud. "I'm kinda hungry -- what about you?"

He cocked his head as she ruffled his hair, giving a short laugh as she did so. No doubt, anyone who was watching would probably misread that gesture, but he didn’t care. Either they would assume the two were in a playful relationship, or they’d go ahead and jump to the conclusion that a pair of siblings were out for a drink together. “Not if it was Ray,” he commented. “Then again, after tonight’s little display, I don’t see why you’d be tempted.” He smirked, toying with a bottle cap that someone had left on the bar.
“I could go for a burger or something,” he acknowledged, nodding his head and standing up. “Gimme a minute though.” He jerked his head in the direction of the restrooms. With a fleeting smile, he turned and made his way through the crowd, managing to avoid being jostled in the process. It was one of the benefits of having been a cop for ten years, he supposed — had it really been that long? He could get through crowds in no time, and not only because he was usually the tallest person in the area…

Her sire had let her have her fun, but he’d taught her how to be smart at the same time. It was almost a shame they’d killed him… but still, she hadn’t exactly risked her own safety to save him. It was his own fault he’d been tracked down so easily; tripped up by his inability to follow his own lessons…
“Oh, very witty,” she murmured, allowing herself a hint of a laugh. “And what kind of meal would you have in mind?” She lifted a brow, curious and patient. This could get to be a very long, perhaps tedious game…
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the object of her attention rise from the bar, and head to the side of the building. She was tempted to watch him… very tempted in fact, but instinct told her to keep her gaze on the vampire in front of her. There would be plenty of time to track him down again later, if she felt the urge…

Sarah nodded at Chris as he rose and excused himself, lounging back against the bar and watching the crowd. There was a limit to how much of the place she could take, really, and not just because of the less-than-sober men who sometimes tried to take her home; that was merely the reason she didn't often visit the Onyx without her "watchdog."
Well, that and the fact that things done with Chris were usually more enjoyable than things done without Chris.
Burgers, huh? That sounds like a plan....maybe we can still catch a movie or something, it's early yet, she mused, waiting for him to come back. There's always the DVD option too, if it comes to that. She wasn't especially looking forward to work the next day, so she was striving not to think about it. C'mon, Shep, it's not like you're in line for the ladies' room, let's move.

There wasn’t a line for the men’s room, obviously; Chris couldn’t remember a time when he’d ever seen a line for that sort of thing. Then again, he didn’t exactly take the time to think about it either. There was another reason for his delay that was, in fact, very simple. It hadn’t taken him ten minutes for nothing, after all.
Chuckling to himself, he headed back through the crowd, dodging a rather bulky man turning away from the bar so he could avoid what undoubtedly would have been a sour encounter, and made a beeline for his waiting partner. He gave her an apologetic smile as he came back to her side, glancing around briefly to check he hadn’t left anything on or around the bar and its stools. “Sorry,” he said to her briefly. “Got waylaid,” he explained, making a rather vague gesture back over his shoulder in the general direction of the men’s room.

"Waylaid?" she repeated. That was not a terribly usual thing to happen to Chris -- Sarah, yes, but not Chris. "By whom? Or should I say what?"

“Hmm?” His pale green eyes looked down at her, and he mouthed an ‘oh’. “I nearly bumped into someone coming out of the men’s room, so I stopped to apologise, and… we started talking.” He pulled a cocktail napkin out of his inner jacket pocket. “She gave me her number. No biggie.” Chris put it back where he’d pulled it from, and glanced around once more.
“Wanna get out of here?”

"Ohhh." She nodded. "Okay. Let's go get those burgers. I think I've had enough of this scene for one night." Hopping off the barstool, she adjusted her bag on her shoulder and straightened her skirt. "Lead on, Macduff."

“If I’m MacDuff, what does that make you?” he asked as they headed around the edge of the dance floor, so they could avoid the inevitable collisions such a journey would have brought had they decided to try and go through it, heading steadily towards the door. He glanced back at her briefly to smirk.
It was getting progressively busier as the hour got later, and by the time they reached the door, there was an unmistakable steady movement of people coming in. Chris imagined there was quite the queue outside.
