Continued from: Alley’s and Streets: Main Streets with Ron, Chris and Sarah
Unwittingly, Forbes had mentally travelled along the same path as Ronnie – giving the other Detective yet more caffeine was the last thing he needed and bad, bad, bad besides. But damn, if it wouldn’t be funny to watch him bounce off the walls. Sure, Forbes would pay for it by having to ‘baby-sit’ Ron until he came down from the high but he found himself doing that most of the time anyway so it wouldn’t be too much of a hardship.
“Do I think Benny would try and pull that kinda trick? Is the Pope a Catholic?”
He turned the car after the one in front of them, looking for his own space to park the car, shaking his head slightly at both Ron’s question and at the sheer brazenness of the informant. Not only trying to get free coffee but risking a meeting inside the building, instead of the more out of the way place behind it as had been originally agreed.

Forbes received a Look for his cheek, coupled with a swat with his partner's beloved fedora and a grumble of, "Smartass." It was all completely good-natured, though. Most newcomers to the force were shocked by the fact that Ron and Forbes had downright despised each other in the first few months of their working together. By their relationship now, it was hard to tell that there had ever been any animosity.
Granted, they did still squabble like an old married couple.
Unconcerned about Forbes' glib manner this morning, Ronald reached to the center console of the car and snatched up the radio receiver. "Sarges," he began, eyes fixed on the unmarked care before them. "You want me an' Forbes parked out back incase Benny tries to bolt?"

Chris had, by this time, parked the car, and killed the engine. He had set the vehicle as close to the entrance as he could get it, easily reached, and when the radio crackled and then sounded Berkshire’s familiar voice, he snagged the receiver from where it sat snugly not far away, bringing it up to reply; “Sounds good to me.” There wasn’t much more to say, but he had to make an effort to be less blunt, he supposed.
“Feel free to punish him by singing at him, if he tries to run for it.” Chris smirked. “Elvis or Sinatra, whoever gets to him first.” Releasing the talk button, he waited for the inevitable protest, his expression suitably amused while he did so.

He’d leaned back against the seat as Ron talked, fingers tapping out another tune on the steering wheel, and glancing around at the semi-full lot. Forbes couldn’t help the small smile that twitched on his lips at the comment that came over from the radio, as tinny as it sounded. He reached out, snatching the receiver from Ron, batting at the hand that tried to grab it back, a rather childish expression of glee on his face.
“You snooze, you lose,” Forbes said lightly before pressing down on the talk button, same childish smile on his face, enjoying the inevitable bickering that was bound to start. “Letting Ron sing at him Sarge? Won’t he just scream cruel and unusual punishment at us? Don’t want to get done for police brutality.”

Ronald was quick to retaliate to his partner's barbs regarding his singing -- he wasn't that horrible, thank you. Sure, it usually took him a few tries to get the pipes tuned, but after a martini or two he could manage just fine. He let Forbes know this with a short growl and a light smack to the back of the head.
Thwap!
"Yuck it up, Jules," he said with a smirk. "'Least I don't sound like a dying cat."

Forbes had been expecting the swat at the back of his head or on his arm. Somewhere on his tender body, as his partner expressed his displeasure in Forbes’s little joke. “Always with the physical violence Ronnie. You really need to speak to someone about your tendency to deal with problems in that way,” Forbes told him in a disapproving voice, shaking his head at Ron’s actions.
“I happen to have a beautiful singing voice,” he added, giving a loud and over dramatic sniff as he did. Forbes had a wonderful voice even though he hardly used it. “Any cat would be honoured to be voiced by me as they died.”

Shaking her head, Sarah reached over and plucked the receiver out of Chris's hand. "All right, boys, that's enough. The Shepherd and I will deal with what's inside the restaurant; you just watch our backs and try to keep that unresolved sexual tension at bay." She chuckled quietly.

“Its only unresolved because Ronnie is too afraid to admit his true feelings,” Forbes snarked back, waggling his eyebrows in an expression that looked like a cross between ‘come hither’ and ‘I’m gonna kill you slowly with an axe in the desert’. “Let me in Ron. Let me in.”
That said, he leaned back in his seat, fingers drumming lightly on the wheel as he watched his partner, the other car and the Starbucks outlet, all at the same time. There was no doubt in Forbes’s mind that the other man in the car would have something to say about his last comment – he would be rather disappointed in him if he didn’t. Forbes also had no doubt that when the time came, both would be ready and waiting for whatever happened.

Naturally, Forbes got his reaction, though it was fairly low-key: "I don't swing that way, bub."
That said, Ron settled himself back in the passenger seat, feet on the dash and looking quite inconspicuous, for once. If Benny decided to run, there was no reason to make the chase any harder by sticking out like a sore thumb. Little maggot tended to be very observant when he was tweaked out (annoyingly enough) and anything that would make for less hardcore chasing was a-okay with Ron.
Not that he was out of shape. Of course not.

Forbes shook his head sadly, pursing his lips together in an expression of sadness and sorrow for his partner, as though the response had physically wounded him. “And here I was, thinking our love transcended all petty things like that. For shame.” The tapping on the steering wheel continued, a habit of Forbes that tended to appear whenever he didn’t have something to do. It was as though he needed to occupy his hands in some way – any way, at all times.
The Detective thought the two of them looked fairly normal, not really sticking out at all although depending on how long it took to deal with Benny, that could change. Not just because they could drive each other mad while waiting but also because the longer they waited outside a Starbucks, without going in or moving, the more and more obvious they would get.

Well, there was no point in delaying the inevitable any longer; Chris felt he had already put it off as long as he could, realistically, and if they waited any longer, the little rat might get nervous and make a break for it, thinking the cops were testing his resolve. Benny did not have good resolve, as Chris and Sarah, and the other Narcotics officers knew; he would run because he would get spooked, and they couldn’t afford to lose information on Donnelly at this point, no matter how small the scraps were.
“No time like the present,” he muttered, glancing to Sarah, before he shifted his badge so it slipped under his shirt out of immediate sight; the chain was still visible at his neck, but it looked like nothing more than a harmless necklace of some sort, a piece of jewellery with no importance. After a beat, he stepped out of the car, deciding to leave his shades where he had dumped them in the vehicle; they were going to be inside anyway, so why bother taking them along?

"You lead, and I'll follow," Sarah quipped, deliberately referencing one of their mutual favorite movies. She knew Chris was none too happy about confronting Benny inside the restaurant, rather than in the alley as agreed, and she couldn't blame him for that. She supposed Benny really was in it for the free coffee; then again, maybe he just felt less like he was a walking target inside the coffee shop.
When Chris concealed his badge, she checked to make sure her own was likewise out of sight. Exiting the car, she stretched, fussed with her hair a little, and then trailed him into the building. "I wonder if they have those peppermint mochacinos or whatever they're called. Jill gets those and they smell really awesome."

At least in the coffee house there was less chance of someone making a move on any of them; if any of Donnelly’s men were watching Benny, they would have been more open to the possibility of trying to interfere with the meeting in a parking lot as opposed to a place like Starbucks. Still, even that knowledge didn’t quell Chris’ displeasure at the unannounced change of plans, and as he entered the restaurant with his partner in tow, he knew the snitch could see that on his face.
Sitting at one of the corner tables, tucked beyond the counter and out of immediate sight of the window and doorway, Benny fidgeted when he saw the tall sergeant and his redheaded partner. Chris spared a moment to just stare knowingly at Benny, before he turned his attention to Sarah, pulling out his wallet and handing it to her. Naturally, he trusted her not to do anything with it that could be considered unsavoury or dishonest. “Just a decaf for our buddy Benny,” he commented; the informant hardly needed encouragement to be skittish, and caffeine wouldn’t help.
Without telling her what he wanted — because she would know anyway — he let her take the leather wallet and then headed for the corner, taking a seat at the table that allowed him a good view of Benny, and also the door if he turned his head just to the left. “We didn’t get the memo about meeting inside,” he said to the smaller man, who wrung his hands and gave a nervous smile, adding a feeble shrug only moments after.

Sarah deliberately took longer than necessary to get the coffee. She pretended to rifle through Chris's cash, a pasttime which became considerably less amusing when she realized he wasn't looking. When her turn came to order, she lingered at the counter, asking a few pointless questions about the different beverages and flirting a little with the cute barista.
Okay, he looked to be about ten years younger than she was, which meant that was a less than excellent notion, but his blushing was a nice perk to her ego after being dumped over the phone again.
Finally, unable to postpone the inevitable any longer, she made her way over to the table. "Benny, how nice of you to join us. Was the alley too cold or something?" She planted the steaming cup of decaf in front of the informant, then handed Chris his coffee of choice.

By the time Sarah joined them at the table, Benny had taken to sounding that nervous laugh that was, to Chris, like nails on a chalkboard, but instead of saying something out loud to that effect, he settled for looking impatient and dissatisfied. Benny went quiet, at least until he remembered he had been asked a question.
“Well, y’know, it’s so warm outside and I figured there’s air conditioning in here and all, and you guys might be more comfortable. Or something.” The little man fidgeted in his chair, cleared his throat, and then tentatively snaked out a hand to shuffle the coffee cup in his direction, glancing almost slyly down into the contents to see what it was. Chris took a moment of satisfaction in seeing the brief disappointment cross Benny’s face before the snitch wisely decided plain old decaf was better than nothing.
