Marcus, ‘doofus status’ aside, was indeed oblivious to any kind of admiration, or whatever the real term for Poppy’s feelings were. Not only was he male, and by definition, less aware of such things, but he had the concussion on his side, a convenient excuse to cover up his missing all manner of things, whether it be in that moment, or hours down the line. It wasn’t that he was planning to abuse the excuse, or even use it as an excuse at all in anything other than a genuine manner should it give him trouble, but the option was still there.
He gave a soft smile as Katherine put Poppy’s mind at rest, looking over at his sister to meet her gaze almost gratefully, as if he had been worried that his words alone wouldn’t be enough to ease the concern of the young woman sitting beside him. As confident as he was in his own abilities, he always held more faith in Katherine’s, even though he perhaps should have grown out of that habit years ago, if one could even call it a habit.

Katherine smiled at her brother, sometimes her people skills managed to come through, usually when she actually thought well of the person she was talking to; like now. Call her opinionated or whatever but when it wasn't job dependant she was pretty damn honest.
Hank Rivera was wearing one of his amiable smiles as he looked at Poppy, "Well I think you're sister'll be proud of you for handlin' all of this so well."
"Dad..." Katherine groaned slightly at her father's, a 'never mind him' expression aimed at Poppy. Now, she felt, was not the time for the wonderful world of the Family Rivera.

Hearing Katherine’s light groan actually made Marcus smile. Usually he was the one to withdraw or complain about that kind of thing; not that he minded his sister taking the stand for a change. He glanced to Margaret Rivera, seeing her patient smile, and then looked almost apologetically to Poppy. For someone who had barely known the two detectives a day, it had to be a lot to take in. The Riveras were a lot to handle ‘en masse’, after all.
Marcus just hoped it didn’t scare her away. If she was reassuring herself and therefore feeling better by being in the room, then he was comfortable for her to stick around. Katherine seemed to be of the same mind; he could read his sister like a book, and she didn’t seem in any way irate or impatient, which was a good sign.

Poppy, for her part, was staring at the Rivera family group with something akin to wonder and awe in her eyes. They were, without a doubt overwhelming in a way, but even so they were amazing. Far too much to take in at once of course. To see a family acting so close knit outside of a telly was… so very different. It was comforting to herself and she could tell it was comforting to the siblings.
She absently played with the tip of a lock of her hair, twisting it round and round her finger, so tight it felt as if it was actually cutting into her skin and blocking the blood flow. Poppy didn’t know what to say aside from a small ‘thank you’ directed at Hank, inwardly pleased by his assessment. She only hoped he was right and Iris really was proud instead of exasperated or annoyed or any of the other feelings her over active imagination had drawn up.

The room in which they all sat — or lay, respectively — became almost uncomfortably quiet. The parents in the room looked to one another now and again, as if debating who should talk, if anyone, before they would glance at their children and Poppy, in turn. They were noticeably careful not to keep their eyes on any one person for long, in case it caused awkward discomfort.
“Well,” began Margaret after a moment, “I think I need some coffee.” She smiled in Katherine’s direction, as if knowing, which she most likely did, it would make her daughter envious. With a glance at her husband, she rose from her seat, leaving her bag tucked underneath it at the side of Marcus’ bed. Hank cleared his throat, muttered an agreement, and rose to join her. After they asked Poppy if she would like anything, with promises to be back soon, the two elder Riveras left the room.
Marcus slouched back further into his bed with a relieved sigh. “Well that was predictably uncomfortable,” he muttered, glancing towards his sister, and then looking almost apologetically to Poppy.

Katherine glared at her mother. Actually glared, but only when her back was turned fully; she didn't want the woman to have the satisfaction of knowing she had irritated her daughter. Margaret had to know that her daughter was itching for a cup of coffee, of course she did and that was why she stated out right that she was going to go and have herself a cup. Typical. Anything to annoy Kath'. The detective relaxed slightly, tension she didn't even know had built up courtesy of being in the near vicinity of her mother ebbing from her limbs. She looked at Marcus, "I told you didn't? Did you see that look? Jeeze. When they come back you're tellin' her you were drivin'... "
Kath' looked at Poppy and managed a weak, 'oops' kid of smile, "Sorry about... well..." she trailed off lamely; talking casually to people was hard for her and she smiled very briefly. She was about to start talking shop again if Marcus didn't jump to her rescue... or just inject some normalcy into the conversation without any jumping or exertion in general. He was good at that, good with people, Kath' wasn't unless there was business to deal with.

Spotting the glare, Marcus managed to restrain a smile. The last thing he needed was a pillow hitting him in the head, not that Katherine would do it out of spite, but she hadn’t had her coffee and, well, Katherine Rivera without coffee often wasn’t all that fun, or patient, at least for those not immediately related to her; those who knew how to tolerate her on a caffeine-low. Of course, the urge to rub it in flared anew as Kath’ once again threatened to ‘drop him in it’ regarding the accident. Marcus’ jaw actually dropped, but he remained silent, if only because Poppy was still in the room, and a sibling bickering match was probably the last thing she needed.
To the young woman, he said, “And y’know, some people don’t understand why I call it ‘Rivera Family Madness’.” He shrugged his right shoulder tentatively, unwilling to risk moving both in case any bruises decided to protest to the action.

She had watched the glare and what she could only assume was teasing with a small smile, enjoying the natural near bickering. The playful behaviour had done more to assure Poppy that the two Rivera detectives would be okay than any verbal reassurances. If they were acting normal then she had to believe that they would get back to normal in every way and that at least something. She was happy to remain quiet, to let the family chat to each other but both of them were talking to her and it would just be rude to ignore.
“Its fine,” Poppy assured Katherine with a faint but honest smile. The power behind the smile increased slightly as she focused her attention on the only male in the room. “I suppose everyone has madness when it comes to their family,” she offered to him, not sure what else to say.

Marcus supposed, subconsciously, that the bickering was more for their own reassurance than anything; they were, without saying as much, telling one another that they were fine. Though both Riveras had had a little more than their fair share of bumps and bruises from their time on the force, he had a feeling it would take more than a tumble in a car to keep them out of action for long. Sure, going back to work when it was allowed was going to be uncomfortable, especially since Marcus didn’t want to be out of the running any longer than absolutely necessary, but he was a cop; a detective. He couldn’t keep himself away. Now that the woman had gone so far as to ‘attack’ them in such a way, Marcus almost wanted to say it was personal. Gazing across at his sister, all doubt about that disintegrated.
As cheesy or cliché as it sounded, even to his own mind, it was personal.
“Our brand of madness always seems so…” Marcus paused, trying to think of the perfect word as he responded to Poppy, brow furrowing a fraction as his thought process worked itself out. “Maybe I just think it’s the worst because it’s my family,” he offered at last, almost in submission, albeit with a faint smile.

Katherine had thought many a time that she would only worry if she and Marcus stopped bickering. Well, now that wasn't exactly on hundred percent true, she worried constantly to some degree but she assured herself that she would only go really nuts if the sibling 'arguments' subsided completely; without knowing it she was thinking the same as her brother as she looked at him. The sniping was reassuring in its own, bizarre way.
When it came to personal of course... Kath's hadn't been able to stop thinking about how personal it was. The psycho-bitch had put her brother in a serious car accident, given him a concussion and landed him in Hospital, simultaneously trapping her with her mother for an unforeseeable number of hours. It was personal all right; she would have to pay. Though as some point she would let the rage out in an appropriate direction, for now it resided all locked away inside. Nice and safe underneath her scowls which she was honestly trying to mute for Poppy.
"I think the word he's looking for is 'intense'." Kath' said, though she smiled -the expression somewhat forced as she thought of her mother and of the fact that she was probably knocking back a nice, hot coffee right about now- slightly, "You got the full on frontal attack and survived, it can't get much worse." She paused, almost apologetically, "I'm very fatalistic before I've had coffee."

When it came to her own sister and the relationship they shared, the bickering was slightly more childish, Poppy relying on her ‘kid sister’ status for most of the jokes, quips and comments. They were probably no less silly or augmentative than the Rivera siblings, just in a different way. After all, she really doubted Marcus stole Katherine’s clothes, music or make up like Poppy had done once or twice – okay, often – to Iris. At least she nearly often brought them back and they only rarely got accidentally destroyed.
“I have my own sister, it’s not so different,” Poppy replied, a faint smile on her face. “I mean it’s different, obviously and quite different because, well they all are…” she trailed off and shrugged, scuffing at the ground with one of her boots, unable to meet Kath’s gaze. “I dunno, you don’t sound too bad before coffee.”

Katherine laughed. Actually laughed and nodded. Poppy, in her opinion, could come and visit them more than once with an attitude such as hers. She refrained from saying 'you should say that around my mother' and simply smiled, loosening up considerably now that her parents were out of the room. The fact that she didn't have her badge or gun on her either went a long way towards allowing her to relax too, added to Marcus nearby and the 'bickering' they had been churning through more or less since they had woken up.
"Well thanks, that's nice of you to say." She said, smiling still.

“Clearly, she’s immune to your crankiness,” Marcus said, perhaps taking advantage of the fact that Katherine couldn’t very well throw something at him while he was suffering from a concussion and hospitalised, as she was herself, at least when it came to the latter. No doubt she would want to hurl a pillow at him, or at least toss an insult back, whether it be about him personally or something that he loved. That was their way. He even turned a smile on his sister, as if to goad her.
Glancing back to Poppy, he smiled, more apologetic this time, as if to say ‘I just can’t help myself’. He was sure she understood, on some level, being a younger sibling like he was himself. “And just think,” he said to her, “we do this at work too.” It was a joke, for the most part. While they did bicker at work, it was kept to a minimum, if only because the pair of them were so dedicated to their jobs that they didn’t want to lessen their professionalism by appearing childish and therefore distracting themselves from something important.

Of course, Poppy had no idea just how rare it really was for someone to provoke a laugh from Kath and so perhaps she didn’t appreciate it quite as much as she should. She blushed all the same, ridiculously pleased at the compliment because it was Katherine saying it and Poppy was quickly coming to understand why so many books had characters with hero worship about cops.
Katherine was cool and not counting Iris, possibly the bravest woman she’d ever met. Coupled with Marcus who was without a doubt the bravest and best man she’s seen and perhaps it wasn’t too surprised that she harboured such respect for them both so quickly. “It’s sort of a good thing to do it at work isn’t it? I mean, if people see your interactions, your natural behaviour it’ll put them a little at ease too?”

Poppy’s thoughts, as unaware of them as Marcus was, were accurate. It wasn’t all that often that Katherine acted so at-ease and loose around someone outside of the Homicide department, but he supposed, since they had gotten involved in the case that had involved Poppy and her sister, his sister felt it was beneficial to make the young woman feel at ease. Marcus understood Katherine better than anyone, but that didn’t mean he presumed to know everything that went through her mind.
“Well, yeah and no,” he said to Poppy with a smile to set her at ease in case his reply unsettled her in any way, should such a thing be possible. “It’s gotta be done in moderation, or our captain might take it the wrong way; think we slack on the job or something. I mean, he’s not that much of a killjoy, but we have to at least pretend to act professional.” At that, he cast a brief smile at his sister. Katherine was anything but unprofessional, and everyone on the force knew it.
