Katherine glanced at Marcus with narrowed eyes; she'd just have to get her own back for the cranky comment later. At this rate they'd be spending several hours together in the Hospital as it was looking like they wouldn't be getting out for a while. Instead of tossing a pillow at him, a pillow she'd then miss and be uncomfortable and more importantly worsen the concussion her brother had.
Instead she refocused her attention on Poppy and nodded, "We never work together on cases either," she explained, "It can lead to a conflict of interest, so we mostly just see each other around the station." That could include her walking by his desk in the Homicide department and ruffling her brother's hair, much to his consternation, or simply bumping into each other in the break room. Either way, Kath' actually liked having Marc' around at work, in the 'keep and eye' on him way, not that she would say that of course.

Continued from: Trauma Rooms with Fee
"Skid, I'm tired."
"Yeah, I know, kiddo. But you've gotta keep yourself awake."
As he tailed into the general ward behind Fiona and her gurney, he swatted lightly at the young woman's food. She jerked her head up from the pillows with a wince. Graydon had left specific instructions for him to keep her awake; the concussion wasn't a bad one, but better safe than sorry. The male wolf nodded his thanks to the nurses as they left to take care of other patients, leaving Fiona and Ian to their own devices. He could hear the murmur of other voices, but he ignored them.
"Iaaaaan -- "
"Fiona."
He felt a little smug when she shut her mouth and scowled. Ian never tried to dictate Fee's life, but the young girl wasn't yet twenty. He felt responsible for her well-being whether or not she appreciated it. Fee didn't need a father or anything, but she still needed someone to keep her safe.
"Don't worry, Chickadee," he rumbled, taking a seat at the foot of her bed. "Bo'll show up eventually and he'll definitely keep you up."
"...That's what I'm afraid of."

She nodded as first Marcus and then Katherine spoke and explained how they could be brother and sister and yet still work in the same department. Poppy draw up one knee as she listened to them speak, wrapping an arm around it and unconsciously settling into a more relaxed and comfortable position for her.
Poppy half turned her head as the doors to the ward opened, half expecting to see Mr. and Mrs. Rivera returning from their quest but instead it was a new patient. Not wanting to stare, Poppy shifted her attention back on the two she had come to visit, the same small and friendly smile on her face.
“But you were working together last night…”

Glancing across the room at the new patient who had been wheeled in and half-shielded by a curtain for a little privacy between her and her — from the looks of it, significantly older — friend, Marcus then returned his attention to Poppy. Her remark was perfectly understandable and justified, especially since he and Katherine had basically just told her they never worked together.
“Well, I was working,” he said, looking briefly towards his sister. “Kath’, Katherine,” he began, pushing the full name out of himself almost automatically for some reason, “had just stopped by at the station, and just happened to be there when the call came in. She tagged along.” He sensed rather than heard her slightly irritated huff, and glanced at her again, almost apologetically, resisting a shrug. “So we were working together, but we… weren’t. If that makes any sense.”

Poppy scuffed at the ground with the toe of her light tan boots as she listened to Marcus, brow furrowed slightly to show she was actually taking in the information and digesting it. “That makes sense. Katherine was there unofficially…?” If anything, that made the female Rivera that much amazing and cooler in Poppy’s eyes, the fact she was willing to go along on a case that wasn’t anything to do with her, just because it involved her brother and she was there.
The admiration was probably clear to see, to those who were looking as she glanced over at Katherine, a shy smile on her face before looking back to Marcus. Not that it was much better to be watching the male detective. Her views seemed to consist of either a hero or a hero she had something of a crush on. No matter where she looked, her blush was just going to grow.

Marcus nodded to confirm what Poppy had asked, ensuring he was careful with the motions of his head; his concussion wasn’t really bothering him too much, but he would only feel like an idiot if he aggravated it enough to make it come back to figuratively kick him in the ass later. He was already aware he would be suffering from a few headaches as it was, after cracking it against the car window the way he had.
The admiration that he definitely could see in Poppy’s eyes was enough to make Marcus smile. Personally, he had had a sort of hero-worship for his sister for years now, something he was always embarrassed to admit, something he did begrudgingly and as little as humanly possible; she had been a huge influence in his life, which was probably obvious even to those who hadn’t known the Riveras for long. Marcus had always looked up to Katherine, and was likely to continue doing so for many years to come.

Katherine nodded too, "I was at the station when your call came through and I went with Marcus and his partner, Detective Wiles to the Church," she said, explaining perhaps unnecessarily for Poppy the events 'on their end' so to speak. Thinking back that far made her think of why she'd been at the station to begin with, Chinese food, food she'd bought at Long Wong's, the place she'd bumped into her husband. Her jaw clamped shut a little tighter, annoyed that he wasn't concerned about her wellbeing after the crash and at the same time knowing that was both selfish and ridiculous.
Her eyes moved to the shaded window and stayed there, her mood had apparently vanished as quickly as the images of the night before had struck her and she remained quiet and staring, seemingly no longer feeling like talking all that much.

Poppy’s expression became slightly puzzled as Katherine suddenly seemed to shut down and turn away from her and Marcus. She only hoped she hadn’t said or done something that could have offended the female detective in some way although she was completely at a loss as to what it could have been.
It wasn’t her place to ask if she had or not however and certainly wasn’t her place to pry into things that were personal. If somehow, Poppy had been at fault then she could only hope that Katherine would forgive her. A small voice in her mind pointed out that it was unlikely to be her fault, that something else was probably to blame for the sudden downturn in mood, some memory or thought.

Seeing his sister ‘switch off’, her mind taking her somewhere away from the conversation they had been sharing, he turned his gaze, slightly shielded by dishevelled black hair though it was, upon Poppy, and gave her a reassuring, slight smile, shaking his head to show her it was nothing she’d done. Unbeknownst to the younger woman, his sister was just like that, carried off at times by thoughts or contemplations, and it was rarely anything personal; it certainly wasn’t in this case.
Not even Marcus knew the cause, half the time, this time being no exception. He could only hope she wasn’t thinking back on the crash, and prayed that she wasn’t somehow blaming herself for it, as he was constantly worried she would. He understood it was the place of the elder sibling to take the weight on their shoulders, but Katherine hadn’t been driving. He had been. In his opinion, that completely excluded her from being blamed in any way.

The smile made Poppy’s cheeks flame a brighter red for a few moments, slightly taken aback by it; so much so that her brain seemed to stutter to a stop and derail before rebooting and reminding the young woman just exactly what the smile had meant, accompanied by the shake of his head – whatever was wrong with Katherine wasn’t her fault and she couldn’t help the swell of relief that came with knowing that.
She didn’t want Katherine to be mad at her because if she had somehow managed to get into the woman’s bad books then she wouldn’t be able to see any of them again. Crush aside, Poppy wasn’t sure she could just go back to her day to day life without seeing them. Including her crush, no matter how hard she tried to deny it, she certainly couldn’t. Marcus was smart, easy on the eyes and heroic on top of all that.
In her mind there was only one person responsible for the two to by lying in the hospital now – the crazy woman who had deliberately smashed into their car.

It was at that choice moment that the elder Riveras decided to rejoin their siblings and the young woman sitting at their son’s bedside. Margaret glanced almost curiously across to the drawn curtain, reclaiming her seat. While she had seemingly been perfectly content to tease her daughter about going to get coffee, she wasn’t about to bring it in and wave it under Katherine’s nose. As she sat, Margaret pulled a bottle of water from her bag and offered it to Poppy with a smile. “We weren’t sure what you would drink,” she said by way of explanation.
Marcus couldn’t help but smile, giving a small shake of his head. The urge to sit up more was rising again, but he supposed he really ought to just lie as still as possible, with the bruising. Besides, they had raised the head of the bed, so it could have been worse.

Rather accidentally oblivious to the fact that she had made Poppy uncomfortable, something that in truth Katherine Rivera couldn't really help - she knew she had a prickly personality at best and the mood swing was kind of natural, her 'upbeat' if it could be called that had plummeted. Her parents returned and her eyes followed them into the room, though she apparently lost interest quickly, even as her Dad took a seat near to her bed, her mother across the room, offering a bottle of water to the youngest in the room.
Her mind had turned to that woman and to Fey. Kath wanted to be a part of the investigation but in reality she knew it was unlikely to go that way. She and Marc' were too close to it now and she hadn't even technically been on duty, so the whole thing was kind of out the window and she doubted Hodge would permit her to get involved. He'd know she took it personally, know that even though she had arguably some of the best instinct's in the department there was a personal stake in this case for her. She was pissed and that wasn't the way a cop should be while investigating something as sensitive as this particular case was.

The bottle of water was accepted gratefully by Poppy, the young woman smiling softly and thanking Margaret for getting her one. She knew the importance of drinking litres and litres of water and while she still loved her soft drinks, the training drilled into her while she was trying to achieve her dream of dancing had stressed time and time again on how you needed to drink the living giving fluid.
She unscrewed the bottle top, taking a quick drink from the bottle, suddenly feeling very thirsty as she watched the two parents resettle themselves by the bedsides of their children. Poppy wondered what was going on in the minds of all four of them as she watched, simply naturally curious. It was perhaps cruel but she had forgotten about the situation the young Catholic boy had gotten in, not wanting to think of something potentially so upsetting and instead focused on the most positive aspect that at least Katherine and Marcus were okay.

Marcus’ mind was, too, occasionally flickering back to Deiniol Fey, and how the woman who had rammed them off the road must have taken him while he and Katherine were incapacitated. It was mind-numbing, both in terms of confusion and disbelief, to think that one woman, by herself, could pull off not only murdering a man of the cloth, but escaping from the police in the first place, ramming an LAPD vehicle off the road and kidnapping a young man without being overpowered. Marcus wasn’t being sexist in his line of thinking, but he had seen the woman. She hadn’t been overly muscular at all, quite the opposite.
He noticed his mother’s continued curiosity towards the drawn curtain, and raised a brow at her, drawing her attention. “I’m not staring,” she said, in a voice that could have been subtler. Marcus, while tempted to roll his eyes, knew better, so he settled for smiling sceptically instead. “It’s human nature,” Margaret Rivera intoned, looking right back at her son with a clear ‘don’t argue’ expression on her face, light-hearted though it might be.
