As soon as Nick made his way to the news floor, he glanced around to see who all was there and headed for his desk. He supposed that he should go let Alan know that he was there, but he could do that in a moment. It looked as if a tornado or something had hit his desk and dropped a ton of papers in one big jumble right in the middle of it. That stunk and, by the looks of it, it was going to take a little while to actually organize.
Still, it wasn’t likely to be long before his curiosity got the best of him and he went to his boss looking for answers. The werewolf had always been curious, something that he was able to put to good use as a reporter- it meant that he had a reason to ask questions and stick his nose in other peoples’ business.

Nick had absolutely no idea as to what he had done to deserve this, but it must have been something major. He knew for a fact that his desk had been immaculate when he had left and yet now it looked like a paper hurricane had come through and dumped everything it had managed to pick up straight onto his desk. This is ridiculous, he thought to himself as he began to sort through everything, unable to figure out what some of it even was and what he could figure out didn’t even belong on his desk. Apparently, sometime between his leaving and coming in, his desk had become a place for people to dump just anything and everything they felt like. If he could figure out who put what there, he was throwing it at their heads as soon as the opportunity presented itself. He didn’t care if other people kept their desks looking like disaster zones, but he personally liked to be able to find things and actually being able to see the surface of his desk wasn’t a bad thing either. He had a system, darn it, and coming in to find a mountain of stuff threw that off. He was by no means obsessively neat- though he did appreciate things being neat- it was just that he didn’t even have a clear place to put a cup of coffee at the moment. Speaking of coffee, someone had apparently spilled some on one of the papers, because there was a huge stain on one.
At the voice, Nick looked up from the coffee stained paper that he was trying to figure out the purpose of. He had to admit that, despite his age, he had never had someone make an introduction quite like that before. Still, to each their own. “Nick Sherwood. Welcome to the Sun. You working a particular field or are you another ‘give me a story and let me run’ sort?”

What the hell…? The thought wasn’t aimed at what Shawn was saying, though he was listened, but instead at… something on one of the papers that had found its way to his desk. Whatever it was, he didn’t really want to know. It looked like something that needed to be poked with a stick- or someone else’s finger- to make sure that it wasn’t toxic or something.
Nick looked up from the papers again and took note of the gaze Shawn was sending his way. After so many years, very little phased Nick any more and while, no, he wasn’t that way inclined and yes, he was taken, being checked out by another guy wasn’t something that was going to make Nick go running for the hills. He most certainly was not going to be returning any flirting, but he was tolerant of other people’s lifestyles that he wasn’t going to just knock the guy flat with a punch for something he might say. Now, if there was any grabbing involved, that was a whole different story.
“LA isn’t bad, but it’s not the greatest. There’s some weird crap that goes on around here.” He wasn’t one to talk considering what he was, but he couldn’t let on about that.

Nick gave a shrug to the weird crap comment, dutifully ignoring the softly spoken comment Shawn aimed at himself. After all, he wasn’t supposed to hear that, even if, due to the heightened sense of hearing that came with being a werewolf, it was loud and clear. There was no way he was about to give himself away by commenting to something like that, so he was just going to seize on what had been said to him and act as human as he could.
“It depends on how weird you like things to be, I guess. Me, I’d rather just deal with covering the stories that have to deal with everyday lunatics, but there are some real nutcases in this city.” Yeah, like freaking vampires and other wolves who think that playing ‘rip the human to pieces’ is a great way to pass the time.

Nick gave a shrug. It was only interesting if you weren’t trying to cover up the fact that you actually existed, which it seemed that he was having to do more and more. Honestly, he didn’t see why some werewolves felt as if they just had to go out and rip someone into little bits and pieces or why vampires couldn’t at least hide the bodies of those they drained dry somewhere that they would never be found. Someday, someone was going to get suspicious and when that day came, he thought that it was likely that all hell was going to break loose. As for touching… Well, hell might break loose a bit sooner if that was to happen.
“Suits are a requirement, no ifs, ands or buts about it.” He tossed a file that was supposed to go to the fashion editor off to the side to be dealt with later. “The boss has this thing about Superman, too. He’s a huge fan.”

As Shawn glanced back towards Alan’s office, Nick looked back to the papers on his desk, going through them and sorting them into piles. He had absolutely no idea why this stuff was on his desk rather than where it belonged, but it had, from what he had heard, happened to everyone at some point in time, so he supposed that it was his turn. As he put a couple of more into the fashion pile, he stopped and read over the paper now on top. Well, would you look at that… He was looking down at a job advertisement and a quick shuffle through the rest of the sheaf showed him that all of them had ended up there. Now it’s starting to look like coming into a mess on my desk wasn’t such a bad thing. He had every intention of writing down the information about any dancing jobs he found and passing the information onto Lynnette.
At the question about Superman, Nick looked up again and gave a shrug. “He’s not the worst out there, but I’ve always liked Batman better. I think it’s the car.” The werewolf was, thankfully, unaware of what Shawn was currently thinking about; the whole touching thing from another guy was more than enough to make Nick uncomfortable.

As soon as Iris heard Sherwood’s comment about Batman, the corner of her mouth twitched slightly. It was as close to a grin as she was going to get right now, but it was a start. A couple of steps behind her boss and slightly to his left, she could see the reporter and the two newcomers. She took in their appearances quickly, committing them to memory so that she would be able to remember which face went with which name after introductions were made.
Due to their positioning, Sherwood hadn’t noticed them yet and she couldn’t help but wonder how the whole Batman thing would go down. She really didn’t prefer one over the other, but she had discovered just how much a fan of either Superman or Batman would defend their favorite.

Nick wished he would’ve been able to pick up his boss’s scent before he had opened his mouth about Batman. If he had caught the scent first, he would have never breathed a word about liking Batman better, even if it was true. He really did have a killer car, but he would have kept his mouth tightly shut if he had realized that his boss was within hearing range. Nick had the feeling that he was going to be paying for that comment in one way or another, but he was just going to have to wait and see what his fate was. At least he hadn’t said something really bad about Superman. That had to be a plus…
Turning in his seat, he look to Alan and Iris, seeing the boss’s raised eyebrow. All he was able to think of that was, Ah, damn. He really did hear that…

Aside from the raised eyebrow, Alan kept his expression perfectly schooled and blank, giving away nothing as to how he planned to react against Nick’s words. Any slander against Superman was slander against Alan as far he was concerned. Admittedly, his reporter hadn’t actually badmouthed Clark directly but it had been almost as bad, siding with the bat man.
He was just going to have to think of something creative for Sherwood, but first – to make him sweat a little.
The editor looked away from Nick, focusing his attention on the newcomer for a moment. This had to be his second new comer of the day, later than expected. “Hollows?” Alan asked, receiving a nod in reply. “We’ll have a talk later,” he instructed – Alan made it a point of holding a conversation with his new reporters on their first day. “But first we have a meeting…” His gaze moved away from the newest member of the paper, settling back on Nick for a moment, eyes cool and apprising.

When around the offices (or when around anyone who might talk to his boss) Nick was careful to never actually badmouth Superman. He really didn’t have a reason to do that anyway, so he normally didn’t, even if Batman was cooler in his opinion because of the car. His gadgets were pretty cool, too, but he definitely preferred Batman for the car.
Despite having not actually run Superman through the mud so to speak, Nick was nervous. Those looks couldn’t mean anything good and Nick knew that he was going to be paying for his comment. He didn’t know how he was going to pay for it, but he knew that he was and that his boss would make absolutely sure of it. So long as he was really lucky, he wouldn’t be demoted to a gofer.
“A meeting?” He knew that there hadn’t been one scheduled, so this had to be about something extremely last minute and possibly big.

Personal reasons aside, Alan had another reason for not simply being outright and telling Nick exactly what he had planned for him. The editor-in-chief believed it was very important to keep the reporters under him on their toes, keep them alert and on the look out for any slight change in the situation. They needed that skill in the reporting world and part of Alan was disappointed that Nick had failed in that respect – he hadn’t heard him coming.
“Murder, police assaulted and kidnapping last night, all one case. We’ve got a personal interest in it, so you can hear all the details then,” Alan explained, his answer as short and precise as he could manage without seeming too cold hearted. “Is everyone in?” he added, glancing around the news floor, still giving nothing away to Nick about his personal future.

Alan wasn’t the only one disappointed that Nick hadn’t heard him coming. He most certainly should have, but he had missed the approach simply because he had been having a conversation. There was no excuse for that as far as Nick was concerned and he was mentally kicking himself for the oversight and not just because he had gotten caught talking about Batman. It wasn’t just him that he was going to be worrying about because, while Lynnette didn’t need his protection, he wanted to know that he would be able to do that should it end up coming down to it.
All one case? Never been around for something that big before.
“Yes, sir, I think so.” While Nick was a great deal older than Alan, the human was still his boss and extremely good at what he did, so even when he knew that he was in hot water, Nick was never less than respectful towards him.

“Good,” Alan responded softly, hand resting on Iris’s shoulder for a moment in what he hoped would be a comforting movement. Then he stepped away from the small cluster of reporters and photographers, voice effortless raising in pitch and tone to become the bellow that could often be heard ringing throughout the news floor, especially when they neared the deadline.
“Meeting people! Five minutes, conference room!”
The groups loitering around the room all looked up at his words, some nodding in acknowledgement and he allowed himself a pleased smile, knowing that long before the five minute deadline was up, they would all be there, ready for whatever Alan had to tell them.

Iris took a bit of comfort in Alan’s gesture and watched as he moved farther out onto the floor and made his announcement. It was the fact that he tried that comforted her more than anything, really. He really did care about those who worked for him and after having had a boss while working in college who had never bothered to learn her name (she honestly didn’t think he would have been able to recognize her face since he had always been looking a bit lower), having Alan as a boss had proven to be a very welcome change. He knew people’s names and tended to actually make eye contact when he spoke with someone, not to mention that he actually gave them a reason to respect him rather than having the ‘I’m God’s gift to earth, you had better respect me no matter what I do’ complex so many people she had met seemed to have.
As soon as the announcement was made she saw Sherwood stand and put down some papers that he had been dealing with. Obviously, it was his turn to be everyone’s personal gofer- it had been hers one day a couple of weeks before. She had finally told everyone that if they put one more piece of paper on her desk that didn’t belong there, she was going to make them eat it. Since they all knew that she wouldn’t think twice about at least making a really good attempt at it while the boss wasn’t watching, they had figured it was best to do things on their own after that.

Iris had no doubt that Sherwood was in for it in one way or another for the Batman thing, but with their boss, it was hard to figure out what he might have planned for payback. It would, undoubtedly, be something the rest of them would find rather entertaining at some point, but for now, there were other things to think and wonder about. Like how exactly things were about to be handled.
Even so and even in her current mood, she wasn’t about to be rude and she did enjoy meeting new people. Reaching out, she shook Shawn’s hand. “Iris Marcus, and I’m sure the pleasure is going to be all mine.” She managed to offer up a smile in return, but it wasn’t as bright as it would have normally been when meeting a new co-worker. Still, she knew that she would have the chance to make up for it; the fact that his smile seemed so genuinely friendly made her think that he might be one of the easier ones to work with, but she had been wrong before and really only time would tell. Still, she had to admit that it was a comfort.
