"Matt? Yeah, he's either working hard or hardly working."
There wasn't nearly enough cream or sugar in his coffee to make it bearable. Simon shuffled over to the counter and proceeded to dump packet after packet of the stuff into his acidic, caffeinated beverage, hoping to even out the pH a little. It wound up looking more like some kind of latte, but at least it was drinkable. Ish.
"...On second thought, maybe leaving him to his own devices was a bad idea. I think he's still sore at me for that pepper gum prank."

Glenn might have lightly tossed something at his partner if it weren’t for the fact that she lifted her mug to drink; he didn’t want to be responsible for her spilling coffee all down her front, and not only because Ophelia tended to dress smartly on any given day, this one being no exception. He didn’t fancy his chances if he got hot coffee all down her blouse, no matter how accidentally.
The lighter-haired man remembered the prank Simon spoke of, and gave a short laugh, nodding his head. “I’d honestly be shocked if he wasn’t still sore about that.” Matthias had been livid about it, and was likely still in the process of overcoming it, if only because other officers in their department continued to bring it up any time he seemed to have gotten over it.

Simon allowed himself a chuckle. "Well now, it wasn't that bad. How was I supposed to know he has almost zero tolerance for spicy things? And you have to admit, it was kind of funny to watch his face turn colors."
The 'prank wars' between Ducotel and Romano were fairly well known around the department, even thoug they were usually low-key things; the occasional whoopee cushion or pouring salt into the coffee. It was all in good fun, though. Simon and Matthias were practically family -- they could never stay angry at one another for long.

Continued from: Hallways with Quinn
The tour had been interesting enough, taking in each department as they passed it but really, the most important room in any police station was the break room. It was the heart of the station and besides all the gossip coming from there, it was the best place to meet anyone who didn’t work with you every day.
Richie cast a glance around the room as they entered, taking in all the different people there. It seemed rather empty for a break room and he supposed most of the people were hard at work in their own departments. “Think of it as a life lesson,” he suggested, rather belatedly to the conversation about the skunk incident.

"Personally, I will never forgot how thin his mouth got, all pinched like a little old lady," Phee snorted slightly at the memory of Simon's partner fighting the urge to squeal like a girl what had apparently been to him and incredibly spicy dish. The prank wars were a source of endless entertainment, Ophelia found them greatly amusing, even though she was fighting her own, slightly tamer wars with Meltcalfe.
She sighed and nodded slowly as they were joined by two new figures in the break room, "Good times." She said wistfully, gazing off into middle distance for a moment before she swallowed another mouthful of coffee and winced. Again.

Simon lifted his mug to the two newcomers, then grinned as he looked to Ophelia. "And while Mattie is still sore at me, the prank has boosted department moral," he reasoned. "People get a good chuckle when they recall it. 'The good of the many' and all that."
Of course, he wouldn't make it a habit of sacrificing Romano's dignity, because Romano was just as likely to come back with something equally as treacherous. Simon wasn't worried, though. Not very, at least.

Ophelia laughed at that, "Ah yes. 'The needs of many' etcetera..." She nodded slowly and tucked her free hand into the folded elbow joint of her opposite arm which held her mug up near her shoulder. Sometimes, she thought, it must seem a wonder that they got any work done at all to outsiders; she believed in working hard and playing hard too and with her colleagues there was no shortage of either of the extremes.
She moved to the side to get out of the way of the coffee machine, nodding to the new addition to the room before looking back to Simon, "Just check your chair for thumb tacks when you get back, I wouldn't put it past him. Revenge is sweet, you know."

Simon cringed dramatically. "Christ..." he muttered as he rubbed his rear end for a moment. "Now, I certainly hope Mattie isn't that upset with me, because that is just cruel and unusual. Really, the pepper gum is not that horrendous."
Cue the sceptical silence.
"...Okay, it's fairly horrendous. But definitely not thumb tack-to-the-ass horrendous." The Frencheman allowed himself a sly little smile. "I like my perfect ass the way it is."

Well that would teach him for ‘zoning out’. Taking note, finally, of the two new arrivals, he nodded his head at Quinn and gave the unfamiliar man a brief smile that passed for a welcome. He didn’t want to seem rude, but cutting himself out of the middle of a conversation to force an introduction on the newcomer might have seemed a bit odd, so he would wait until Quinn prompted anything of the sort.
Turning his attention back on his fellow Vice officers, he laughed a little at Simon. “And the truth comes out.” It was a good thing he wasn’t holding his mug, he thought, or Simon might have inadvertently made him drop it with whatever retaliation was coming his way.

From the way the three near the coffee machine were talking, it seemed clear that they were friends and knowing the way stations worked, probably in the same department. Two of them might have even been partners but it was a little too early to be making such guesses. Richie almost missed the friendly banter, people who not only watched your back in the field but were also there in your face outside of it.
Almost. He wasn’t ready to go back to that, the whole reason he was even in this city in the first place was to get away from people who knew and cared about him. Richie may have missed joking around but it was still possible to make light comments and not mean anything by it at all. He nodded back to them, glancing over at Quinn to see if introductions were going to be made.

Richie nodded to the three as the introductions were made, doing his best to burn the names and faces into his memory. He was normally pretty good when it came to things like that but the detective had a feeling that today was going to be filled with introductions, filled with flashes of people, names and faces and enough to make his head spin.
“Pleasure,” he replied as he nodded before glancing over at Quinn. “Lots of sugar, I have a terrible sweet tooth,” Richie confessed, fingers reaching in his pocket for a moment to touch against one of the wrappers of his lollypops. It still amused him sometimes that he had swapped the addiction of smoking for just a strong addiction of sweets.

Glenn inclined his head towards the mugs he, Phee and Simon held to show Quinn that they were good as far as coffee was concerned, at least for now. Their self-appointed break would be over soon, and it would be back to the grind. Still, they could enjoy their downtime while it lasted, and Glenn had every intention of relaxing for now, even while he was standing up. If he slouched on one of the chairs, he might not get out of it again, and there was work to be done.
“So what brought you to L.A.?” he asked Green, turning his gaze from Quinn to the new officer. “I hear New York’s kinda gritty, but at least they have defined seasons, unlike California.” He chuckled, glancing to Phee and Simon. Los Angeles was great and all, Glenn especially thinking so since he had lived there all his life, but sometimes, the weather got a bit tedious and unbearable.

Gratefully, Richie took the offered coffee from Quinn, swallowing a mouthful. The drink was always a pleasant treat in his book, years on the force having attuned his taste buds so that he could enjoy it, no matter how bad it really was. The wife of his old partner had often been heard complaining that she had to learn to make a terrible cup of coffee, just so that it would be drunk. And as for Lisa-Ann –
Grief swept over him suddenly at the casual thought of his beautiful wife, twisting his insides and making the coffee lurch unpleasantly inside. It passed as quickly as it had begun, nothing more than a flash of memory. With a conscious effort he focused on Glenn Porter and his question.
“Yeah, I was getting bored with winter ever fourth season. Just got used to the summer and it became cold again. Thought it was about time for a change of scenery…” Richie replied, a small almost smirk on his lips. “Only so many times you can skid over ice before loosing your temper.”

"I hear that," Phee responded to the ice comment, having previously had to wipe coffee from her chin at Simon's comment about his 'perfect ass'. Some moments were just priceless like that. The blonde looked to Richie and gestured to herself with her thumb, releasing it from the wrapped position around the handle of her mug just long enough to indicate herself, as unnecessary as it was.
"I'm from Philly," she stated, the small smirk of amusement reflected on her features as she recalled the climate she had grown up in, "I was shocked when I cam to LA and could suddenly feel all my fingers, y'know?"

Disposing of what he had been toying with, Glenn glanced from his partner to the new officer. “And I’m born-and-bred LA, so I’ve never known anything different. I’m also the kinda guy who thinks winter in New York could be interesting, but I guess it’s a different story when you’ve lived through it, right?” Of that, Glenn had no doubt, briefly flickering his gaze towards Simon, who was sipping from his coffee, and perhaps waiting for a break to introduce himself formally.
Glenn just hoped Simon wouldn’t take ‘introduction’ to mean anything involving a prank; then again, the older detective was respectful to other officers, and while he was extremely liable to prank his fellow Vice officers, he likely wouldn’t target a newcomer to the force, especially one from another department. Well, not often, anyway.
