Niles Langley grinned as he watched Kefka's final form dissolve on the tiny screen of his Nintendo DS, sinking slowly as the uber evil final boss was defeated by his awesome party made of win and strong. Final Fantasy 3 (well, 6 in Japan) was still one of the best videogames in history even though graphically it didn't match up to it's younger brothers and sisters of the franchise; Niles would never grow tired of the pixel graphics from the 16-bit era with their little sprites walking around the weirdly skewed world maps. The simplicity of it all was strangely beautiful to him, and though the hardcore gamer in him drooled at the sight of the stunning new graphical capabilities of ever more powerful consoles a part of him missed that simplicity, where more weight was put onto the story than the pretty. Not that he didn't appreciate the pretty too.
He wiped a tear as the end scene drew to a close, saving before turning the handheld console off and setting it onto the coffee table he had been resting his feet on moments earlier. He had the Dragon's den left to complete - again - but he could get around to that later. It's not like the dragons will run away and hide in the meantime. Grabbing his cup of now cold tea, he sank into his comfy armchair, thinking about doing a review for the game, grimacing when he took a mouthful of cold tea; if there was one thing he hated more than internet trolls with no discernable trolling ability, it was tea that had gone cold. He stared woefully into his half-full mug for a while, sighing because he always, always forgot about his tea when he was gaming and most of the time he ended up wasting it.
Niles gave a heavy sigh, pushing himself up from his chair and padding through to the kitchen, turning his computer on as he passed it by, letting it boot up as he made himself a fresh brew, letting the teabag soak for a few seconds before pouring in the milk and sugar. He really shouldn't put so much sugar in his tea, but whatever, it tasted good so he piled it in. Mmm, milky, sugary, tea-leafy goodness. He then reached up to the cupboards above the kettle and brought out a tin of cookies that had been sent in to him by one of the members of his forum when he'd let slip that he loved chocolate chip cookies like an addict loves crack. In a word? Lots. If anyone wanted Niles to do anything all they'd need to do was bribe him with cookies. No lie.
With tea in one hand, tin of cookies in the other and a cookie already shoved in his gob, Niles returned to the living room and put the drink and tin down, taking a bite of his cookie as he pulled the keyboard out and typed in his password. After throwing himself into his comfy swivel chair he nibbled away as the familiar sight of his Chocobo wallpaper which is a bright, retina-burning, seizure inducing yellow, then opened his email client to see what internet wonders were awaiting him this fine evening.
He'd been away for the past few days on a trip to a convention and when he got back he'd gone straight to Rose to play for a bit until the puppy decided she needed a nap, at which point he went to his DS to recharge his gaming batteries, so his emails hadn't been checked in a fair few days.
God dayum, these cookies are awesome. He never needed much of an excuse to eat cookies until he was sick, but these ones were particularly delicious; he may be curled up in the foetal position with a tummy ache later but it would so be worth it.
There was a ping as his computer told him that his emails had loaded.
Huh. 521 new messages. This could take a while.
