Nick gave her a grin as he took the empty bottle. “Guess it does. Another beer for the lady, then. Coming right up.” As he headed for the kitchen, he said, “Not getting drunk is nice little bonus to being a werewolf. At least, I think so, anyway. Considering how long I’ve been a werewolf, I don’t really remember what getting drunk is like. Probably sucked, though.”
He threw away the empty bottles and retrieved two more from the refrigerator. Nick had started to realize that he was forgetting quite a lot about his time as a human. Most of the time, it didn’t bother him, but every now and again, the thought of losing the memories of part of his life- however long ago that might have been- bothered him. It was strange knowing that it was possible that someday, all of his memories of being a human, as faded as they already were, would be lost to him completely.
Shaking his head in an attempt to chase those thoughts away, he opened the bottles and took them back to the table, a smile back on his face as he put Lyn’s down in front of her. “There we go.” Settling back into his own seat, he took a drink of his fresh beer and tried to keep his mind occupied on things other than how much- or rather, little- he could remember of life as a human.

She followed him with her eyes as he left the room, catching herself before she started staring; werewolf or not, it was rude to stare. She poked at her dinner again, thinking about what Nick had said, waiting until he returned with the fresh beers to say what she had to say. “Well, I was never human, so I don’t really know what it’s like to get drunk. But I’ve been in enough clubs to suspect I’m not really missing much.” She offered him a smile.
Lyn lifted her beer. “How many of these do you think it would take to get a werewolf drunk?” she wondered out loud, giving him a cheeky little smile, cocking her head slightly. She swigged the beverage from its bottle. “Not that I’m saying we should try and find out but… any ideas?” She wasn’t sure why she was even thinking about it, but she was curious.

“I have no clue and I don’t really ever intend to spend enough time drinking them to find out. I mean, beer isn’t exactly the strongest stuff on the face of the planet, even if a few humans do manage to get drunk after just one or two.” He shook his head with a grin. “Don’t imagine the boss would really appreciate me coming in with a six pack either, which I’d probably end up having to do if we were to try to figure out the answer to that question.” He gave a shrug. “Maybe a dozen to feel a buzz?”

She nearly choked on a mouthful of the beer, but managed to stifle it, swallowing awkwardly instead, and letting out a bit of a breathless laugh afterwards. “I’m trying to imagine you walking into work with a six pack… I’d pay to see it, actually.” She set down her bottle.
Thinking it over, she shrugged with a tilt of her head. “A dozen seems fair. I don’t think I’ve ever had that many in one sitting, and our metabolism makes short work of it, really… the buzz probably wouldn’t last long, would it?” Lyn picked at her food again, slipping some more into her mouth and chewing quietly to herself.

Nick chuckled. “Well, don’t get your hopes up. I’m not going to work with a six pack. That’d be just a little too weird and, believe it or not, I actually like to be professional when I’m working. I wear a suit to work and everything.”
He studied his beer bottle and gave a shrug. “I know I’ve never had that many at once and I don’t think I’m going to try it. The buzz probably wouldn’t last all that long, but it’s not something I particularly want to try.” With that, he put his beer on the table and took another bite of his dinner.

“Well, damn. And I was looking forward to getting a good snapshot of that,” she teased, her eyes bright with fleeting mischief. She gazed at him across the table, laughing to herself at the mental image, but thankfully, not having anything in her mouth to potentially choke on if the amusement became too much. “You wear a suit?” Her composure almost slipped. “Wow…”
Lyn ate some more of her dinner, pausing to speak, “I think you’d get sick of the taste before it could really kick in, as well. I mean, beer is all well and good, if you’re in the mood for it, but after a while, it just gets bland and boring.”

“Yes, I wear a suit. I’m not all jeans and T-shirts. Okay, that’s mostly because I have to wear suits because of this thing about the boss wanting us all to look professional, but I do wear suits. You’re welcome to go check out the closet if you’ve got any doubts about me actually having any.”
Nick took a drink of his beer and gave a nod. “I know what you mean. I can’t drink more than two or three at any one time unless it’s been just a really bad night.”

“You could always get one of those hats from the 1940s, and stick a ‘Press’ ticket in it,” she offered with a playful smile. “Though if you ever did that, I would have to get a picture… that would be some comedy gold, right there.” She didn’t doubt he had suits, but it was still surprising to hear that he wore them, and potentially on a day to day basis, as well.
“I couldn’t imagine working anyplace that required me to dress ‘professionally’… and any job that asked me to wear a skirt? Well, let’s just say I wouldn’t stay there long.” She easily went back to the topic of beers, changing back and forth as if there weren’t technically two conversations going on at once; “They just end up tasting really… bland, and maybe even a bit sickly. I guess it all depends on your tolerance, but I just indulge in the occasional bottle or two.”

Nick couldn’t help but chuckle at the image he got of himself wearing one of those hats. It was far too funny, which was the whole reason he half considered doing just that and showing up at her front door when he did. He would definitely have to remember that thought for later use. If he actually decided to go through with it, of course. There was really no way for even him to know if he would.
“The ties can be a little annoying, but it helps keep me in the apartment, my car running and food in the kitchen, so I can’t really complain.” Like Lynnette, he was perfectly capable of switching from one conversation to another. It was actually rather entertaining when he thought about it. “For the most part, just one or two can keep me happy. It’s just when life really starts to suck that I need a few more to keep my sanity.”

Lyn could picture it all too well, which was the main reason she had decided not to reach for her beer for a little while, at least. If he ever did do that, she was likely to dissolve into a fit of giggles, which was somewhat rare for her. Lyn didn’t giggle, after all… she laughed. Sure, sometimes it wasn’t very loud, but she still never giggled.
“Hmm… yeah, money. It’s a pain in the ass, but I should probably find a way to make some.” And by that, she didn’t mean literally; she was happy to relax in unemployment for a while, but she knew that the bills and rent weren’t going to pay themselves. She needed to earn her fair share… but the question was ‘how’. “Oh, when I need that kinda thing, I usually swap beer for something else,” she told him, deciding she had calmed down enough to risk taking another drink from her bottle.

“Good thing about being around as long as I have is that I’ve had the time to build up a really nice nest egg. I could probably get away with not working for a good while, but I don’t want to touch the money I’ve got put back unless it’s a major emergency.” He gave a shrug. “I actually like working, so it’s not that big of a deal. It gives me something to do with my time and keeps me from having to dip into the savings.” He gave a grin. “Besides, as a reporter, I’ve got a free pass to be nosy.”
He cut another bite from his enchilada with his fork as he said, “Whether or not one of those times leads to beer or something else always depends on whether I’m at home or out. I don’t actually keep anything stronger than beer around the apartment, but if I’m out somewhere, I might stop at a bar or something if it’s been a really rough day.”

“Oh, I have some savings, but… well, if I spend them all, then they’re not savings anymore, are they?” Her eyes danced with amusement for a moment before she set her fork aside, letting the food she’d eaten settle before she even entertained the idea of eating more. She reached for her bottle to drain a little more of the beer, setting it down again after taking a drink. For a moment, she focused on the feel of it as it slipped down, and the taste as it lingered on her tongue, before her eyes met Nick’s again.
“I usually keep a bottle or two of something or other at my apartment… or I used to. I haven’t done it in a while actually. For one thing, there’s no point, because we can’t get drunk, and for another… well, it’s just sad to drink that kind of thing alone.”
Especially if you end up drinking an entire bottle without realising, while you watch some made-for-TV-movie…

Nick gave a little shrug in response to the bit about savings. “I guess the drinking thing is really all how you look at,” he said thoughtfully. “I mean, I personally don’t have any problems about drinking alone, whether it’s beer or something else. Sure, it’s always nice to have company, but since someone to drink with can’t always be found, I’ve learned not to think about how sad it might actually be to go it alone. Though, if you ever need a drinking buddy, you know where to find me. Unless, of course, you decide that you’re sick of me or I’m working some sort of insane hours trying to get all of my stuff done before the paper goes to press.”
He finished off what was left on his plate and eyed what was still left uneaten. While, yes, he did have an insane appetite at times, this wasn’t one of them. He was, by some odd chance, actually full. Nick leaned back in his seat, picking up his beer and taking a drink.
Weird how food always seems better when there’s company to be had, he thought.

“I don’t know,” Lyn began almost thoughtfully, putting her hands in her lap and leaning forward in her seat a little, at least while she was pausing in her meal. “You always see in movies, and on TV… it always looks so ‘sad’ to drink alone like that. No offence intended… actually, it’s always different for the men. They always down the scotch when they’re angry about something, or about to go smash some heads or… rob a bank.” She looked down at her plate, feeling a little ridiculous for twisting the topic. “Women? Well… it’s just a bit pathetic.”
Lyn smiled at the offer of a drinking buddy though. “Well, I’ll definitely keep that in mind. I know where you live, after all.” She smiled, keeping the wolf from her eyes, just barely. She had to fight back its more playful tendencies, or else she might say or do something she would possibly regret later. “And maybe one day I’ll have to come and see where you work, so I can bug you there too.”
Wow, because that didn’t sound pathetic, did it?

“Well, you can’t go by what you see in movies. They twist things around and make things look worse- and sometimes better- than they actually are. It’s not pathetic for a woman to drink alone. It shows independence and let’s everyone know that you don’t need someone around to make you comfortable enough to have a couple of drinks.” He gave a little grin. “Oh, and I only drink alone when I’m angry or about to go smash some heads. I still haven’t gotten around to robbing a bank yet.”
Nick gave a chuckle. “Well, you definitely know where I live, I’ll give you that much. I don’t know what you’d think about where I work. It’s usually pretty busy and I’m usually coming, going or at the computer. And sometimes I’m going back and forth from my desk to the boss’s office, trying to get something okayed or getting a new assignment. Still, if you want to stop by sometime, we’re usually so busy and there are usually so many outside people buzzing around that you’d probably go pretty unnoticed by everyone else. It’d be the perfect chance to see how the paper runs if that’s something that you want to do.”
